Rio 2 Trailer: Birds of a Feather Rock Together

Rio 2 amps it up in the first true trailer for the sequel to the animated smash from Blue Sky Studios. The entire tropical avian gang is back, including Jesse Eisenberg as Blu, Anne Hathaway as Jewel and who could forget Will.I.Am and the rough and tumble Rio songbird.

Rio 2 is the Carlos Saldaanha-directed follow-up to 2011’s Rio, and beyond what was shown in the Rio 2 teaser trailer… we don’t get much. But, the little guy who speaks during the first part of the clip is frankly priceless.

Here’s what we do know about Rio 2. Our favorite rare tropical bird Blu and the love of his life Jewel have started a family. Wanting their offspring to live like natural (read: wild) birds, she insists on the family taking a trip into the Amazon. Knowing this is in the vein of the original Rio, we’re thinking it doesn’t go so smoothly.

Rio 2 lands April 14, 2014.

The first TV spot for Kick-Ass 2 has landed and it features prominently the stars of the first Kick-Ass, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Kick-Ass himself Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Kick-Ass 2 has added Jim Carrey to the mix, as seen in the first Kick-Ass 2 trailer and he could not be more impeccably as Colonel Stars and Stripes.

The film is here at Comic-Con and we will bring you our video interview with the cast early tomorrow. But, when we spoke to Christopher Mintz-Plasse a few months back, the star’s anticipation for making another Kick-Ass was through the roof.

With the world of Kick-Ass expanding, where the franchise can go from here is anyone’s guess. It seems as it the series could write its own ticket for the future. That's something we will definately explore with the cast!

Riddick Trailer: Vin Diesel Refuses to Get Caught

Although he is the most wanted man in the universe, there’s something about the characterization of Riddick by Vin Diesel that audiences just know he will never be caught… and that’s why they love to watch him. The latest in the Riddick trilogy arrives in theaters September 6 and Universal Studios has released Riddick's latest trailer.

Joining the franchise (and we could not be more thrilled) is Battlestar Gallatica veteran Katee Sackhoff, as well as Keri Hilson, Karl urban and Dave Bautista. We've come a long way from the cryptic first Riddick trailer

As you see in the first moments of the trailer, Riddick has been left for dead. But as that alien creature discovers… he is far from it.

A bounty still is over Riddick’s head (and frankly has been since he first appeared in Pitch Black), and it appears this new group of bounty hunters think they can catch the anti-hero… think again.

James Wan is back scaring us, after his work on Saw and Insidious (and the upcoming Insidious Capter 2) with The Conjuring. The based on a true story is culled from one of the many cases of a couple known as The Warrens, who specialize in fighting the supernatural who want to do tremendous and terrifying harm.

Wan just released a The Conjuring: Inside the Warren Files clip yesterday, and today Wan wants you to explore The Devil's Hour.

The Conjuring hits theaters July, stay with Movie Fanatic for our full review... until then, check out The Conjuring trailer for a good scare!

The Conjuring Review: Dolled Up Horror Pushes the Envelope

Director James Wan is on quite a roll and his latest, teased in this chiling The Conjuring trailer, should only add to his rising Hollywood stock. The man behind Saw and Insidious has returned with a horror flick that is based in truth.

The Conjuring Vera Farmiga

The Warrens are a supernatural spirit-fighting couple who have a long-documented history of ridding spirits and demons from people’s lives. What is teased in The Conjuring trailer is just one of their “adventures,” and it follows a couple with small children (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor) who have moved into a house that they could not be more thrilled about. You know where this is going, don’t you?

But, you would be wrong. The Conjuring goes beyond the standard horror fare and even puts a new spin on the stale haunted house subgenre.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are the Warrens in The Conjuring and our story takes place in the 1970s where the schlock of the era’s fashions is only surpassed by the shock of this utterly terrifying tale.

The Conjuring Doll

They are summoned to Livingston and Taylor’s house when they find, behind a boarded up wall, an unexpected basement that seems fine, except for a doll that their daughter has an (unfortunate) attachment to. The scares come slowly but surely until our petrified parents call in the experts.

Wilson and Farmiga make a terrific team, both in crafting characters that are compelling, but also in bringing the couple to life who are joined by their love of each other and also helping those in need who are suffering from the supernatural.

What Wan has done with The Conjuring is craft a story that effervescently builds with excitement, shock and awe until its terrifying conclusion. Not only has he made a film that will delight longtime (and picky) horror films hungry for something original, but movie fans of all facets of what Hollywood produces can experience the film and truly appreciate its uncanny ability to build tension and terror until jaws are dropped and knuckles are red from gripping that movie theater armrest.

The Conjuring Patrick Wilson Lili Taylor

Our The Conjuring review can state that there are few times when attending a horror movie results in a satisfying blend of bombastic scares and sizzling drama. This film does both, and so much more. At the least, it is further cementing Wan’s status as the go-to director for wildly original horror fare. At the most, the director has produced a vision that creates a movie-going experience that broadens his genre’s appeal to the masses.

Red 2 Review: Retired and Extremely Dangerous Rerun

$

The blockbuster that was Red surprised many, but on paper its success and thus the demand for Red 2 should have been of little shock. Pair a wildly popular graphic novel with superstars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and a recipe for success seems a no brainer. Red 2 picks up months after the last film in a Costco of all places.

Red 2 Anthony Hopkins John Malkovich Bruce Willis

Willis’ Frank is living a life of suburban bliss (so he thinks) with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), but she is craving more. What a surprise given the fact that Sarah and Frank met in Red when bullets were flying and the excitement was palpable?

Malkovich’s Marvin shows up at said Costco and tells Frank that “they” are closing in and things aren’t as safe as the soft rock-laden landscape of the superstore may appear. There’s a mission they went on in the late 1970s and at the core of the espionage is a troubled man who is rumored to have leaked some vital information that names Frank and Marvin.

That fact will take Marvin, Frank and Sarah to Paris, Moscow and London and an action fest that also takes the audience to Hong Kong with the introduction of Byung-hun Lee and his “world’s best assassin" Han Cho Bai. As seen in the Red 2 trailer, parts of Frank’s past come to light in the sequel to Red.

First, it seems that he had something to do with Bai winding up in jail as an enemy of the state, and second, Russia’s most deadly -- Catherine Zeta Jones -- and him had a past relationship that Marvin calls Frank’s “kryptonite.” Needless to say, that does not sit well with Sarah, but Marvin and Frank need Jones to help clear their name.

Red 2 Helen Mirren

Sounds like a promising premise. But, Red 2 is truly nothing more than a high school reunion that goes better than one expects. It’s great to see everybody, and they’re terrific conversationalists and present good company. But, during the morning after, you may wonder why you went.

Unfortunately, Red 2 is hardly thrilling. It seems on paper with its international intrigue that the film would be a classic Cold War mystery. Yet, it is fun -- but without any of the elements that should be there to ensure an adventure that takes our heroes to all corners of the world fighting off death at each corner.

The Movie Fanatic Red 2 review welcomes the film in the sense that it is pure joy hanging out with Marvin, Sarah, Frank and especially Mirren’s former MI6 agent Victoria. Add in the welcomed presence of Lee and Anthony Hopkins and Red 2 is pure, but empty fun.

Ender’s Game: Harrison Ford Talks Returning to Sci-Fi

Sure, it may seem that Harrison Ford is playing a character in Ender’s Game that could double for a mature version of Han Solo. But, when we caught up with the cinematic legend at Comic-Con to talk about his first foray into sci-fi in decades, he says that Han Solo from Star Wars and Colonel Hyrum Graff in Ender's Game could not be more different.

Ender's Game Harrison Ford Asa Butterfield

“Han and Colonel Graff are nothing alike. Graff is a very complex character. He has an awesome responsibility and recruits and trains young people in this structure of the story,” Ford said.

“He faces a lot of moral issues that are involved with young people in warfare. The complex moral issues are part of Graff’s story. Ender (Asa Butterfield) faces issues of morality at the end of the film where Graff is aware of his moral issues throughout the entire movie and that is part of the story.”

What compelled Ford to return to outer space was the source material, written by Orson Scott Card, and Ford addresses Card's anti-gay marriage stance within moments. “The book deals with a lot of complex issues of social responsibilities and the moral issues that one faces in the military establishment. I was just delighted to be involved in a film that deals with such moral issues made by such talented people. I think Graff is a much more complex character than Han Solo,” Ford said and smiled.

“That doesn’t mean that I regret Han Solo.”

Since he stressed the moral springboard that Ender’s Game presents is what compelled, we wondered what of those paradoxes he most identified with.

"This movie is very pressing and the novel was very pressing in recognizing something that we now have to deal with in our lives, which is the business of war. We are somewhat disconnected from that. So the morality of a military commander and a military command structure was exciting to explore as well as the reasons why we wage war. There are moral concerns with this film and they are something we deal with daily in our lives. The issue of inter-planetary warfare is science fiction but has a realistic tone that reflects concerns of our everyday lives like drone warfare and the capacity that we have technologically to kill,” Ford said.

“The other is the use of young people to wage war, which is always a concern when we use the youngest and the fittest of our culture in warfare. There is a question in the film of using younger people for warfare. In the book Ender starts out at eight years old and we changed it to 13, which I think was a smart choice. But the character that I play is responsible for manipulating young people in the service of some perceived need for humanity as a whole. No matter how you wrestle with the questions of warfare, the more you create a complex question and I think it is important for us to visit these questions not only in the daily news but also in our civic lives.”

One of the greatest joys for the movie legend was the opportunity to work with another screen legend that, surprisingly, he has never performed alongside, Sir Ben Kingsley.

Harrison Ford Comic-Con

“It was great. Besides his moniker (Sir) he is a great actor and a warm kind of guy [laughs]. I vastly enjoyed working with him and I had never met him before! The pleasure of working with him as an actor was a real treat. I also had the pleasure of working with these young people who are enormously talented and dedicated to telling the story of this film,” Ford said.

“They were also surprisingly dedicated to the craft of acting. It was surprising to me for their ages. They are tremendously talented young people. I give credit to them and I give credit to Gavin (Hood) because casting is so important in these things and I was delighted to be involved.”

Finally, the elephant in the room is addressed given author Card’s opinions on gay marriage.

"I think none of Mr. Card's concerns regarding the issues of gay marriage are part of the thematics of this film. He has written something that I think is of value to us all concerning moral responsibility. I think his views outside of those that we deal with in this film are not an issue for me to deal with and something I have really no opinion on,” Ford admitted.

"I am aware of his statements admitting that the question of gay marriage is a battle that he lost and he admits that he lost it. I think we all know that we've all won. That humanity has won. And I think that's the end of the story."

Only God Forgives Review: Ryan Gosling in Stylized Sleeper

$

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn made movie magic together in 2011 with Drive. The film was one of our Top 10 Movies of 2011 and single-handedly managed to place a shot of adrenaline into the movie industry. Gosling and Refn have reteamed in Only God Forgives and it feels and sounds like Drive, but where their last film invigorated, their latest is a film in search of a story.

Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives

Gosling is a man living in a Thailand town, who honestly does not say too much. It’s a perfect role for the actor to sear a performance solely from his face. He scouts fighters for an MMA-type Thai league, and works alongside his brother who does lots of not-so-good things, the least of which is dealing drugs. When he is killed as revenge for an unspeakable crime, it sets in motion a cycle of revenge and subsequent reciprocity.

His brother’s death also brings his mother to town to “pick up her dead son” and to implore her son to seek vengeance that is to the extreme on the get back scale. Kristin Scott Thomas is almost unrecognizable as his mother and she may be the most vicious and seedy person in all of Thailand upon her arrival. The actress is honestly the best thing about the film and she sears through every moment she’s onscreen.

The problem with the movie is that it looks amazing, as seen in the Only God Forgives trailer, but that is not enough to carry it to greatness… like Gosling and Refn achieved in Drive. It sounds fantastic too, as the soundtrack is thick with synthesized sounds and rhythms that reflect the pastel neon look of the landscape.

Ryan Gosling Only God Forgives

Only God Forgives just simply moves really slowly. We know that is completely on purpose and the pace set by Refn is meant to allow the audience the soak in the sewer-like feelings that his leads and the story emit. And it’s not that we can’t spend two hours in the dark with the lowest of lowlifes. Our issue with Only God Forgives is that, yes it’s slow, but not much really happens even when the plot is moving. We don’t care about the characters. The viewer won’t be compelled by their vexing situations.

And in the end, it just feels like cotton candy. Our Only God Forgives review can say that it tastes great and looks great, but a half an hour after it’s gone… so are your memories of it.

Weekend Movie Preview: July 19, 2013

The weekend movie preview has a little something for everyone in the middle of the summer heat. The gang from Red is back in Red 2, horror fans will be thrilled with The Conjuring, the kids will adore Turbo and Ryan Gosling fanatics have something serious to chew on with his latest, Only God Forgives. And then there's Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges ruling the dead in R.I.P.D.

Red 2: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Mary Louise Parker are back in the sequel to Red. This time out, the gang is under fire for being a part of a super secret nuclear program during the Cold War. As we stated in our Red 2 review, it is bloody fun watching everyone working together again, especially the addition of Anthony Hopkins in a "is he bad or isn't he" role.

Turbo: Reynolds has a two-movie weekend, the first to arrive (on Wednesday) was the animated Turbo. Reynolds voices the title character, a garden snail with dreams of racing in the Indy 500. It's a superstar cast including Paul Giamatti, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson. Our Turbo review found it perfect for kids, and even parents as its themes are universal.

The Conjuring: Director James Wan (Insidious) has done it again, as we reported in our The Conjuring review. The story is just one from the Warren files, the couple who made a name for themselves ridding supernatural nasties from the lives of average citizens. The Conjuring review found the film powerful, horrifying and incredibly original.

R.I.P.D.: The Reynolds-Bridges tandem as dead police officers charged with policing the dead has the most original of ideas, even if it looks a bit like Men in Black. The film did not screen for critics, so enjoy the trailer below and we'll bring you our review later this weekend.

Kick-Ass 2 is directed by Jeff Wadlow, and John Leguizamo has joined the cast for the film August 16.

Riddick Comic-Con Red Band Trailer: Released!

Vin Diesel came to Comic-Con and brought a little gift with him: the new explosive red band trailer for Riddick. As his co-star Katee Sackhoff took the stage with him, she explained why she and Diesel thought so highly of the crowd -- enough to bring presents.

"Science fiction fans are the best fans in the world. They'll watch things you should give them their money back for and love every minute of it. And then create drinking games for it," she said and laughed.

Then Diesel added some credibility to the glorious geek fest that is Comic-Con and even admitted that a certain role playing game had inspired his characterization of the anti-hero -- Dungeons and Dragons.

"I think the fantasy role-playing world I was so immersed in ended up playing out in the way I approached Riddick's mythology," he said.

Riddick comes back to action September 6.

Divergent: Shailene Woodley and Theo James on World of Veronica Roth

San Diego has the sunshine, but it seemed especially bright as Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, along with director Neil Burger, that were blinding. The Divergent trio spoke about their upcoming, highly anticipated, motion picture at Comic-Con. Star Woodley said that she was no stranger to wanting to be in YA novels turned big screen blockbusters.

“I did audition for The Hunger Games, back in the day,” Woodley admitted.

Shailene Woodley in Divergent

But, she spoke to that film’s star Jennifer Lawrence and her advice about how to handle the immense pressure that goes with taking beloved literary character and bring them to life. “I asked her about her experience with Hunger Games and how her life had changed going from small, independent, movies to something as big as Hunger Games. She gave me beautiful advice,” Woodley said. “She said how much she appreciated it and how much it has changed her life for the positive.”

Divergent is based on the book by Veronica Roth and as it was turned into a major motion picture, look for the YA phenomenon to reach a whole new level of huge. James was thrilled to join something so huge, especially a world he himself enjoyed.

“I had an affinity for the character from the first time I read it,” he said. “He was different for me because he had a very grounded, quiet, sense of masculinity which I don’t think you see much these days and it’s reminiscent of those old movie stars, like Paul Newman. They encompass someone with great strength, but also a strong sense of being.”

Burger was drawn to the world Roth created, which he has teased his vision of in the recent Divergent stills. “Obviously for a director, what’s wonderful is to try to create a new world. A world set in the future and created all that visually,” Burger said.

Tris Prior Divergent

But, at the end of the day, what drove him to spend years of his life on this one story was he liked the truly human elements of Pris’ (Woodley) journey.

“Yes, it’s based on a young adult novel, but it’s a universal story about where do I belong? Who am I loyal to? Am I loyal to my family? Am I loyal to myself? What am I willing to go out on a limb for? I liked all those ideas in her book and how they were tightly tied to the action. Then I felt it expanded out to something much larger, which was how do you keep a society together?”

Woodley found the leap from television star (Secret Life of the American Teenager) to independent movie star (The Descendants) easy compared to the challenge of working with, literally, nothing. “Green screen acting is way more difficult than human interaction. That was a big learning lesson on this movie. It was really fun doing a movie of this scale with themes so powerful in a world that is so different,” Woodley said.

“A lot of it was challenging for me, because I had to erase my preconceive notions of what I was used to acting-wise and creating a new world and adapt my style of artistry that this movie lends itself to”

What did Woodley like most about the book?

“See, I read the book before there was a script. Luckily for me it was written from Tris’ point of view, so Veronica kind of did a lot of the work for me,” she said and laughed. I admire Tris’ sense of selflessness. She grew up with that and ingrained in her from an early age. But, I think that that is a trait we could use a lot more of in the world today. That, coupled with the bravery she’s called upon to exhibit, makes for a strong character that is admirable.”

Divergent and Shailene Woodley

The shooting itself could have been challenging, but according to the film’s star… it provided her with “one of my favorite moments in life.”

“There was a lot of good days to be honest. But, the Ferris wheel day was pretty special. It was night shoot and we climbed this Ferris wheel for 12 hours straight in the middle of the night. It was a full moon, and the first super moon of the year, which I was geeked out. How often to you get to climb a Ferris wheel?”

For James, his favorite moment making Divergent came during a demanding emotional and physical day. “The climatic scene of the movie where Four has been put under this serum and he’s not himself and Tris comes to save the day. There’s a fight scene between them and she essentially wakes him up through love,” James said.

“It was a powerful scene and we were both sweating and I had her hands around Tris’ neck and there’s this moment where we connect. It was a great way to add emotionality to a big action set piece. It’s going to be a beautiful part of the movie.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Jamie Foxx Explains Why Electro “Wants to Burn the City Down”

Jamie Foxx was talking to Movie Fanatic about why he so identified with both sides of the coin that is his role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He is both Max and the villain Electro, and Oscar winner Foxx felt a kinship to Max based on their shared upbringing. He described one person he knew coming up as a comic in L.A. that literally turned on him, much like Foxx as Electro does to Peter Parker.

Jamie Foxx Amazing Spider-Man Comic-Con

“When I was in L.A., as a young comedian, I had a little situation. There was this gangster dude who would say, ‘Whenever you need some help, give me a call.’ I needed his help one day, so I took the help. I was indebted to him, so every club I’d go to he'd be like, ‘You got me, right?’ And I’d say, ‘I can only get one in to the club.’ And he’d say, ‘I got nine with me.’ It was this constant thing. I had to stand up and say, ‘I don’t want to deal with you anymore.’ He turned into this villain. So, I took that to the character of Electro."

Foxx knows people like Max. “[In the movie], his father left him. He was married, but we don’t go into that. He couldn’t get going. For an actor, that’s perfect for guys like us. There’s a building block. You know if this guy has lost his father, immediately there is something about his character that is different. If he’s always seeking his mom’s approval, which was a little bit like mine,” Foxx said.

“I was adopted at seven months. My mother, I knew at the time, I would wait for her to come into town. I was waiting for her and she was a tough woman. She lives with me now, it’s all worked out. The same with Max -- what was great about Mark (Webb, director) was when we set that platform, Electro was not easy, but it makes sense.”

Foxx channeled his former gangster friend and his metamorphosis. “When Spider-Man says to Max, ‘We’re partners.’ I saw him taking it to heart. When I turn into Electro, I don’t want to let him off the hook,” Foxx said. “The fight is more epic. The fact that Electro is not talking a lot, he’s just down to business. He wants to burn the city down and he wants to [leans into microphone] get rid of Spider-Man.”

As one can tell simply by this Electro The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Comic-Con video, the villain is stern in his evilness.

Jamie Foxx is Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

“I wanted Electro to be serious. I wanted him to be a formidable opponent. I saw Andrew (Garfield) out at Chelsea Pier once [before shooting started] and I said, ‘Somebody don’t like you.’ He laughed, but seriously I wanted Electro to be angry.”

As we know about what it is that turns Peter Parker into Spider-Man and his motivation for saving people in need, so too Foxx required a similar backstory to ensure the maximum malevolence. It sure appears that they've upped the evil factor from The Amazing Spider-Man.

“We decided we needed three things from Max. He needed to be betrayed by love. He needed to be betrayed by family and he needed to be betrayed by his work,” Foxx said.

“We came up with it’s his birthday. Even his mom doesn’t remember his birthday [crowd says in unison: “ahhh”]. See… that’s how you feel! That sets it up. He says to her, ‘It’s a very special day. Mom, you don’t want to say anything.’ And she says, ‘No, I don’t have anything to say to you.’ That sets it up so when Electro turns into this guy, there’s a little of you saying, ‘I understand where he comes from.’ It wasn’t disturbing. It was great to see that journey.”

Man of Steel is getting a sequel, and that is not even the biggest news: Batman will appear in the Zack Snyder-directed follow-up to his smash. Using a speech from The Dark Knight Rises, actor Harry Lennix (who's in Man of Steel) joined Snyder on stage at Comic-Con and made a statement that will be felt throughout the DC cinematic world.

"I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your private moments, in all the years to come, my hand at your throat,” Lennix said. “I want you to remember, the one man who beat you.”

During the Warner Bros. panel, no other huge information was released, although Snyder did reveal the logo and announced that Man of Steel veterans Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne will return. Well, and Superman himself: Henry Cavill.

Given that Batman will be appearing in a movie before Justice League, take our poll and let us know: Who should play Batman?

Emily Blunt gets into the action in Edge of Tomorrow, and proof of that fact is seen in the Comic-Con release of her character poster. The classically trained British actress is certainly breaking out in the action thriller, that was until recently known as All You Need is Kill. Star Tom Cruise also represents with his metallic suit that teases what this thriller is all about.

We’ve seen the official Edge of Tomorrow Comic-Con poster, and judging by the Blunt poster, she’s integral to the adventure as well.

Doug Liman is directing the film that finds Cruise and Blunt sporting what looks like some pretty uncomfortable suits. Cruise is a futuristic soldier who is killed, and is reborn each morning in order to get his mission right. Does it sound like a militaristic Groundhog Day

Avengers: Age of Ultron is Title of The Avengers Sequel

Movie Fanatic is stunned at the Marvel Studios presentation that we just walked out of, moments ago. The first piece of news (and all the rest is coming at you) came from Joss Whedon, who admitted that the sequel to his highly successful The Avengers will be called Avengers: Age of Ultron. We also got our hands on the new logo!

Avengers: Age of Ultron Logo

More on the Captain America: The Winter’s Soldier press presentation and Guardians of the Galaxy announcement of their cast in a moment. But, let’s explore this title of what is essentially Avengers 2.

Ultron, for those who don’t know, is a robot that first landed on the pages of the comic icon’s pages in 1968. The titular character is a robot who rebelled against its builder and became too powerful. It appears as if Whedon has announced his villain by releasing the title of his next Avengers film.

What is fascinating is that we may be living in an age where movies are now influencing comics instead of the other way around. Ultron was “re” introduced in a 10-issue set earlier this year in what now in hindsight appears to bring the character more into the Avengers mythology than it had been before.

What we'ew also wondering about with all this news -- is that meeting between Vin Diesel and Marvel and what it now means. Stay tuned…
