James Brown Biopic Gets a Name and Release Date: And It Is?

It was just days ago that Movie Fanatic reported that Universal has announced that Chadwick Boseman will play James Brown in the late singer’s biopic for producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind). Tate Taylor is directing (in a follow-up to his Oscar-winning The Help) and the film will land in theaters October 17, 2014. We think the 42 star will give a performance worthy of such a legend. He did it with Jackie Robinson!

James Brown Picture

But what is it called? I Feel Good? Even better… the Brown biopic is being called Get On Up. Perfect title given how many millions of people he has literally gotten to Get On Up and shake a leg.

The film will chronicle one of the more astounding lives in music history. Brown was a trailblazer, to say the least, and his shows at the Apollo were nothing short of legendary. Heck, the man’s shows anywhere were iconic.

Rumors have been flying as to who will be in the supporting cast with The Help veterans Octavia Spencer (seen recently in Fruitvale Station) and Viola Davis (who could not be missed sizzling on the screen in that Ender’s Game trailer).

More on this highly anticipated project to come.

The official poster for the remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has arrived and it features Ben Stiller a little high on life. Yet, knowing the story... that could not be further from the truth.

Hot on the heels of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty trailer, the official poster for the film lands. Stiller portrays the titular character that is so unhappy with his life that he escapes into daydreams that literally take him away.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Poster

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty also stars Kristen Wiig (recently heard in Despicable Me 2), Adam Scott, Sean Penn, Kathryn Hahn and legend Shirley MacLaine and is based on the classic tale by James Thurber.

Stiller stars in the role that Danny Kaye made famous. The story follows Mitty and his unhappy life and the epic daydreams that at one point become more real and adventuresome than he could have imagined. When his job is threatened, he escapes into a daydream that melds into reality and finds him on an escapade that has Mitty crossing continents dodging danger, finding romance and perhaps by the end… discovering himself.

Riddick Featurette: Inside the Vin Diesel Franchise

After yesterday’s stunning pair of Riddick clips, Universal has released a behind-the-scenes featurette taking viewers inside the making of the third film in the Riddick series. After first being introduced in Pitch Black and then given a big budget sequel with The Chronicles of Riddick, star Vin Diesel and series creator David Twohy have scaled it back a bit with the third film.

Don’t get us wrong, it is still an epic story told in a way that fans of the series should celebrate with joy when the third film arrives September 6. It’s just that this time out, Diesel and Twohy had to fund the project themselves and secured financing outside the studio system. That way, what we see on screen is closer to what the Riddick filmmaking duo sought to make.

In the clip below, Diesel and Twohy talk about the making of the film and more importantly, why this particular movie was so special to them. And therefore it should also be a treasured treat for fans.

As seen in the Riddick red band trailer, Diesel is joined onscreen by sci-fi veteran Katie Sackhoff, Star Trek movies' star Karl Urban as well as newly adorned Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista (Diesel is also in Guardians of the Galaxy as Groot!).

And stay with Movie Fanatic for our interviews with the stars and director premiering all next week.

Afternoon Delight Exclusive: Josh Radnor Talks Film Future After End of HIMYM

Josh Radnor is about to embark on his ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother, and while Movie Fanatic caught up with him for an exclusive video interview to talk his latest movie role in Afternoon Delight, he got reflective about the TV smash while still having a palpable hope for the future as he readies his follow-up to his critically acclaimed film Liberal Arts.

“It’s totally bittersweet, but also it’s been nine years. It’s time to be done, but at the same time it’s been a transformative thing in all our lives,” Radnor said of HIMYM’s final run.

As for what’s next film-wise? “I was working on a bunch of things that were competing scripts trying to figure out what to do next and one has galloped out in front!"

Radnor was joined by his Afternoon Delight onscreen wife, Kathryn Hahn, who herself is having quite a career rush. Hahn recently stole scenes from Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis in the comedy smash We’re the Millers and will soon be seen opposite Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

As seen in the Afternoon Delight trailer, Hahn plays a wife and mother who is looking for a little more out of life. She meets a stripper (Juno Temple) and takes in the lost soul in hopes of filling a void. Hahn adored the character and found she surprisingly could relate to her, although that is not always necessary to effectively play a part.

“I don’t think you have to,” she said of identifying with a character. “As a human being, there is hopefully something you can identify with with anybody. I think with this, it was the womanhood after mommy-hood and who are you after kids.”

Afternoon Delight also stars Jane Lynch (stay with us for that hilarious exclusive interview tomorrow!) and hits theaters August 30.

One Direction This Is Us: Morgan Spurlock Takes Us Inside “Phenomenon”

One Direction has conquered the world and their debut concert film (Vote for the best concert movie!) hits theaters August 30 chronicling their meteoric rise. Documentarian Morgan Spurlock had a front row seat with One Direction: This Is Us to the pandemonium that surrounds Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson.

Morgan Spurlock One Direction This is Us

Spurlock called Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to take us inside the filming of the concert documentary and he let us know why he thinks One Direction is beyond the hottest band in the world right now, as well as what it feels like to live – albeit for a few months – in the eye of a pop culture super storm. “I’ve seen fans for all kinds of things over the years, but nothing like this,” Spurlock said. Evidence of that mania can be seen within minutes of the One Direction: This Is Us trailer!

The filmmaker, responsible for Supersize Me and so many more documentary classics, has seen fandemonium -- after chronicling Comic-Con in Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope. But what is happening right now with One Direction is something that has honestly never been seen. No band in the history of music has attained this type of success, this quickly.

Sure, they had the platform of The X-Factor and the help of music mogul Simon Cowell. But, to get to tens of millions of Twitter and Facebook followers… something special is happening here and Spurlock gives us priceless and exclusive insight.

Movie Fanatic: None of us can imagine what it is like to be in a Beatle-mania like situation. You experienced that with One Direction all over the world. Can you even describe that beyond what we see in the film?

Morgan Spurlock: It’s just insane. Being in the situation where everywhere you go there are people waiting, chasing, screaming, that are clawing to reach out and touch you where you go, it’s an incredible thing to witness and be along for that ride. It was one of those things where you know what it is and you get into it and you still can’t quite prepare yourself for the immensity of what’s about to happen.

Movie Fanatic: Where did you first notice it outside of Britain?

Morgan Spurlock: We follow the boys when they land in Japan for the first time and there are 3,000 people waiting at the airport for them as soon as they get off the plane. Going through Europe, there are thousands of fans that are chasing the bus around everywhere we go, camping out everywhere we went. In Mexico City, there were probably four and five thousand fans who camped outside of their hotel for five days straight… it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

One Direction This is Us Still

Movie Fanatic: Having lived that, having experienced that, can you put a finger on why?

Morgan Spurlock: I think it is a few things that caused them to explode. Right when they were blowing up, there was a real British moment that was happening with Will and Kate getting married. And with the Olympics coming, there was a lot of focus on how great Britain is. And here comes these five incredibly handsome guys who all can actually sing and have talent, and the minute they start talking and singing, they are disarmingly charming and are normal. They are regular guys. I think the thing that continues to connect them to fans and continues to make their fan base grow is this normalcy.

Movie Fanatic: It seems as if they're even bigger than the Beatles were, and it feels like sacrilege saying that.

Morgan Spurlock: Well, yes… they have inter-connectivity with them. They are the first band to truly be blown up out of Twitter and social media. And for fans to have that direct relationship with them and to have ownership of them -- the fans have made this happen. To have that, almost like stock in a company, they have stock in this band that is valuable to them.

Movie Fanatic: What surprised you most about these five lads?

Morgan Spurlock: In the midst of this insanity, what is admirable is how they haven’t let it corrupt them and go to their heads. One of the biggest reasons is because they are not solo artists. Each one of these guys have four other guys in the band that is there to keep you in check and give you a place to vent and take you down a peg if they feel that you need it.

Movie Fanatic: Why do a music doc now? And why was One Direction the right group for you to do it with?

Morgan Spurlock: I’m a lifelong music fan, and it’s probably hard to find someone who is not. The idea of doing a music doc… I was always excited about. I loved [The Band’s] The Last Waltz. I saw the Rolling Stones' Let’s Spend the Night Together doc when I was 12 years old. Those were pinnacle moments for me, these music movies. The idea of doing a documentary, the skill set that I have and combine that with a music movie, I was excited about.

One Direction: This is Us Concert Photo

Movie Fanatic: Was this the first chance you had to do one?

Morgan Spurlock: A couple of years ago, I got called by Paramount to meet about doing the Justin Bieber film, Never Say Never. At the time I was doing The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, so I couldn’t. Last January, while we were finishing both Comic-Con and Mansome with Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, I got called again by Paramount who would love for me to do the Katy Perry movie, Part of Me. Again, I said, “I’m doing movies now. I can’t do this.” So, when I got called in June about doing the One Direction film -- I was in the UK when they were blowing up at first so I knew exactly who they were -- it was one of those things where opportunity had knocked now for a third time. I was like, “I can’t let another one of these opportunities pass me by.”

Movie Fanatic: You’ve followed them, taped so many concerts… do you have a favorite One Direction song?

Morgan Spurlock: Of course! You can’t see 35 One Direction concerts and not have a favorite song [laughs]. My favorite song is off their last album, which is She’s Not Afraid.

Movie Fanatic: What was the biggest challenge for putting together One Direction: This Is Us? Was it what to keep and what to cut?

Morgan Spurlock: That’s the hardest thing in any documentary film. Whether it was Supersize Me where we had 300-plus hours of footage to Greatest Movie Ever Sold where we had 600 to 700 hours. This movie… total concert and doc footage combined it was 963 hours of footage in total. It does come down to difficult choices and what you fall in love with. There are scenes that are great that just don’t make sense in the storyline. It’s tough. Thank goodness that we now live in a world of the DVD extras… it’s fantastic [laughs]!

Movie Fanatic: When you sat down preparing to shoot This Is Us, did you know what songs you wanted to shoot where, or did you film everything and put it together in editing?

Morgan Spurlock: We filmed everything. For the 3D concert, we shot five shows at the O2 Arena in native 3D. We shot those shows start to finish. And once we were on the road with the guys, we were continuing to shoot concerts and shoot them behind the scenes, and from that footage, we were deciding what to convert to 3D afterwards.

Morgan Spurlock One Direction Premiere

Movie Fanatic: As a filmmaker new to 3D, how was it working with 3D?

Morgan Spurlock: It was incredible and one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Movie Fanatic: People have a lot of opinions about Simon Cowell. But after seeing this film, I’m even more impressed than before. To pick these five guys who had never met and create this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, is impressive. What was your take-away from him?

Morgan Spurlock: He’s brilliant. The fact that Simon saw these five guys -- saw them on a talent show independently of one another and said, “You know what. Rather than sending these guys off… why not put them together in a group? Let’s see what happens.” People say, “Oh, it was his master plan all along.” You know what? You can say all you want about a master plan, but success like this, you really can’t plan. You can’t predict how fans are going to react. The reaction the global audience has to this band is phenomenal. That’s the only way to describe it. These guys are a phenomenon. And people think he’s behind the scenes pulling strings. What I love about it is One Direction are their own bosses. They decide everything they’re going to do. They vote on opportunities and three votes wins.

There is something so cool about the 47 Ronin international trailer we showcased yesterday. Given that the film takes place in Asia, it seems only fitting to witness the teaser with that foreign flair. Now, merely a day later, we have an international poster for 47 Ronin that features Keanu Reeves’ samurai front and center.

47 Ronin International Poster

Reeves had to learn some serious samurai moves for the role and it was evident he nailed it, even from that first 47 Ronin trailer that debuted last month.

The film hits theaters stateside December 25 and features Reeves as a half-breed warrior who is rejected by his colleagues. When their leader is assassinated, that unlikely hero rises and leads them to victory and vengeance.

It's kind of a movie poster day today at Movie Fanatic with the premiere of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty poster and the Gravity George Clooney poster!

Batman vs. Superman Filming in Michigan Early 2014

The Michigan Film Office announced today that their state will have the honor of serving as the filming location for Batman vs. Superman, the sequel to Man of Steel. Zack Snyder is credited, according to a press release by the office, with bringing "together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time – Superman and Batman – for the first time on the big screen."

Batman vs. Superman Logo

So it looks as if Ben Affleck as Batman will have to do his thing in the state that is also serving as a location for Michael Bay’s Transformers 4. That’s a whole lot of sequel money pouring into the state that is probably best known for producing killer cars (apt that Transformers is there), Motown… and this writer!

“This project will further strengthen the reputation of Michigan and metro Detroit as a premier film destination,” said Margaret O’Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office. “We look forward to the spotlight shining on our incredibly talented workforce and the businesses that support our film industry here in Michigan.”

The state film office refers to the movie as an “as yet untitled feature film,” but we all know the title will be Batman vs. Superman. They are expecting that the production will start in "early 2014" and will hire approximately 406 Michigan citizens as workers and bring in $8.6 million in hotel and per diem payments for cast and crew.

It’s great for the state of Michigan and even greater for fans of DC Comics who will see two of their best go at it… once and for all.

The Thor sequel has been on quite a kick of late, with the release of those 10 Thor: The Dark World images and the Thor and Loki character posters earlier this week.

Today finds the first TV spot that will give a wider audience its initial glance at Chris Hemsworth’s return as the Norse god. As we saw in the second Thor: The Dark World movie trailer, the challenge this time is immense.

As an alien race threatens the stability of all our worlds, and especially Asgard, Thor must enlist the help of his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Wait, what? Yup, the villain that made it delicious to be evil in The Avengers now has to work side-by-side with his brother.

What else is interesting about this first TV spot is we get to see more of the Asgard warrior played by Jamie Alexander and we also get to see Natalie Portman and how she first sees Thor and how she ends up on Asgard.

Thor: The Dark World hits theaters with its hammer flying on November 8.

Perhaps those that think that Ben Affleck can’t capture the rage of Batman and those demons that bounce around in his head like a bat in a cave should check out this new clip from his upcoming thriller Runner Runner.

In the new clip, premiering days after our last Runner Runner clip, it finds Affleck’s online gambling billionaire giving co-star Justin Timberlake a serious talking to. It’s rage meets understanding personified. Kind of like… a certain Caped Crusader?

Fresh off the news that Batman vs. Superman filming in Michigan early in 2014, we’ve got this clip from a film that really seems to know what story Runner Runner wants to tell.

Timberlake is a grad student who loses all his money to an online gambling site, owned by Affleck. When he heads to the luxe Caribbean island where Affleck calls home to get his money back, he instead winds up getting sucked into his world. Will he get in over his head? After all, as the first Runner Runner trailer said, “The house always wins.”

As you can probably tell from the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 trailer, things are a little different in Swallow Falls since Flint (Bill Hader) and Sam (Anna Faris) left. Sure, they thought they had saved the day when Flint’s invention produced food falling from the sky to a hungry population and then it got out of control. But, when they return to Flint’s hometown in the sequel, they realize pretty quickly (in the clip below!)… that things have changed.

Flint, Sam, Brent (Andy Samberg), Manny (Benjamin Bratt) and Earl (Terry Crews) must do what they can to contain the foodimals that have become a byproduct of Flint’s invention, before they get to the mainland and threaten the entire country… and the world!

Check what Anna Faris, Bill Hader and Benjamin Bratt had to say about coming back to Swallow Falls and don’t miss Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 when it hits theaters September 27 in 3D.

Thor The Dark World: Tom Hiddleston Promises a “Roller Coaster”

Would we expect anything less than a thrill ride that rivals those at our favorite theme parks from any of the films in the Marvel universe? With the release yesterday of the Thor: The Dark World trailer, we can see that the sequel to Thor will keep the momentum going.

Thor: The Dark World Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston, in fact, recently said in an interview that, “It's a roller coaster, no question. It's full of ups and downs and loop-de-loops and twists and turns. It will take you to places you haven't seen before."

The actor that embodied Loki better than anyone could have was talking to MTV News and from the sounds of it, the Shakespearean trained actor seemed to delight in the storyline that finds Thor having to mend fences with Loki in order to fight a common evil.

Heck, those Thor: The Dark World character posters that we just premiered are subtitled, “Brothers in Arms.” How true that is, given what we gleaned from even that very first Thor: The Dark World movie trailer.

"Loki has a very complicated relationship with Thor. He is an agent of chaos without equal in the world he inhabits. He knows his true nature. He knows he doesn't belong in the family of Asgard, and he's locked away in the beginning of the film in the deepest, darkest recesses of the dungeon as public enemy number one," Hiddleston added.

Why, oh why, would Thor trust his brother ever again? "Lo and behold, Asgard needs his help. That's going to be a very complicated allegiance."

You said something there, Mr. Hiddleston. That is for sure.

The actor also felt that he personally didn’t like the way that the Hulk tossed him around at the end of The Avengers like a rag doll and hopes that there is a rematch… even if Loki isn’t slated to appear in the sequel since the villain role is now filled by James Spader as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron

"I do feel like there's some unfinished business between Loki and the Hulk. I feel like he didn't get a fair fight,” Hiddleston said.

The banner was revealed on the Catching Fire website and it does nothing but get us excited to see how the sequel to The Hunger Games will play out. Judging by that latest Catching Fire trailer that debuted at Comic-Con, the addition of a new director in Francis Lawrence has done nothing to reduce the power of this engaging story.

Katniss and Peeta have to return to the life or death battlefields and participate in the 75th Annual Hunger Games, aka the Quarter Quell. Whoever wins may change the balance of power in Panem completely.

Chris Hemsworth may be back as that hammer-wielding guy as shown in the recent Thor: The Dark World trailer. But, there’s another side of him coming even sooner that is sure to send hearts racing. Hemsworth stars in Ron Howard’s Rush as British Formula 1 racing legend James Hunt. The film chronicles the wicked rivalry between Hunt and Austrian racer Niki Lauda.

In a new behind-the-scenes video from Rush, Howard and Hemsworth talk about the need to impeccably capture on screen the inconceivable danger these drivers face so that the film reflects the reality of what is going on on the racetracks.

Previewed in the Rush trailer, the film also stars Olivia Wilde and Daniel Bruhl (in a career announcing turn as Lauda) and races into theaters in New York and Los Angeles on September 20, before going wide on September 27.

Man of Steel: Zack Snyder Unapologetic Over Metropolis Destruction

$

It was hard not to notice the utter destruction of Metropolis in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Watching Henry Cavill as Superman and Michael Shannon as General Zod virtually throw themselves all over the city bringing entire buildings down in the process was jaw-dropping.

Man of Steel: Superman in Action

As the Man of Steel DVD is announced as being weeks away, Snyder is talking about the mass destruction in his first film in the new Superman series and his comparisons to ancient myths is, frankly, quite fascinating.

"I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence,” Snyder told The Japan Times.

“In America, we don't have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman... is probably the closest we get. It's a way of recounting the myth."

What do you think? Tell us in the comment section below if you thought that third act of Man of Steel was a little too destructive.

We're guessing the city will get a makeover as Ben Affleck is Batman and comes to town for the sequel that we think will be called Batman vs. Superman.

Weekend Movie Preview: August 30, 2013

The final Movie Fanatic Weekend Movie Preview of summer 2013 is here! It's hard to believe that we are knocking on the fall movie season door, but alas... we are! The last weekend of the summer movie season is actually quite placid and only finds two big films hitting theaters. Ethan Hawke gets behind the wheel in Getaway and the boys in One Direction get their close-up in One Direction: This Is Us.

One Direction This Is Us: To go from "losers" of Simon Cowell's talent show X-Factor to biggest band in the world in a short amount of time is astounding. Award-winning documentarian Morgan Spurlock chronicles said journey and in the process manages to humanize these five UK lads who have become larger than life. As we state in our One Direction: This Is Us review, it is not the greatest concert movie of all time, but it is pretty freakin' amazing. Between their insanely catching songs, charming ways and the sheer awe that emerges from seeing tens of thousands of screaming fans clamor for them all over the globe, This Is Us is one fun ride.

Getaway: Hawke tackles his third film of the summer in what has got to be one of the greatest summers any actor has experienced. Unfortunately, Getaway mostly crashes and burns. The story follows Hawke's former race car driver who arrives home to a phone call telling him his wife has been kidnapped. He is instructed to steal a car and follow a series of directions that leads him to break laws left and right... for what he does not know. He picks up a miscast Selena Gomez along the way, and as our Getaway review reports, it's a thriller that seems to run out of gas.
