X-Men Days of Future Past: Wolverine Has “Bit of Fun” with Magneto

As one can tell at the end of The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s alter-ego is pulled into the world of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Now, what we didn’t exactly know is which Magneto the clawed hero would get entangled with -- after all, those that follow the X-Men know that Magneto and Wolverine don’t exactly get along.

Hugh Jackman is Wolverine

While chatting up his latest film teased in the Prisoners trailer, Jackman was asked about the latest X-Men film and it seems that it will be Michael Fassbender’s Magneto who will get the brunt of Wolverine’s wrath. "It's fair to say we don't get on that well. I get sent back to the past and he has no idea who I am, but you can imagine Wolverine has a bit of fun with that," Jackman said.

So, there you have it: Wolverine will be traveling back to the 1970s to aid in the battle against the Sentinels and their mutant hunt that won’t stop until all the mutants are wiped from the earth.

It is easy to tell, by the excitement generated by the X-Men: Days of Future Past cast at Comic-Con, everyone involved is beyond thrilled to join forces. Jackman cautions this is not the X-Men version of that other superhero conglomerate.

"I think some people are saying, 'Ah, this just sounds like an excuse to get all these actors together and make an Avengers-style movie.' But the truth is that it's a great script and Bryan is very ambitious to make the best movie of them all. He's got the biggest cast, the biggest budget, and he started it all, so it's his legacy,” Jackman said.

“He's a fan of time-travel movies, and the detail that's gone into it is incredible. I'm quietly confident that it will be the biggest and the best of them all. When I sat there on that panel at Comic Con, and looked down at all the actors, you think, 'This might be one of the best ensembles ever assembled.’”

World War Z Exclusive: Marc Forster Sees Zombies as “Mirror to Society”

As World War Z lands on DVD and Blu-Ray, director Marc Forster phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview that takes us inside the difficult, yet triumphant, shoot of the film that has banked over $200 million domestically.

World War Z Set Brad Pitt Marc Forster

Previewed in the World War Z trailer, the film stars Brad Pitt as a U.N. worker who goes across the globe in an effort to find the source of a zombie apocalypse and therefore, hopefully, be able to stop it.

Forster was confronted with reshoots that certainly worked out, given the success of the film. And that wasn’t his only challenge. Fans of the bestselling book were leery about how to turn their beloved zombie story into a narrative on film that would work.

We asked Forster about all of the above, as well as what it was about Pitt that made him the man to carry a film that seemed to have so much baggage that ultimately triumphed on so many levels… as we reported in our World War Z review.

Movie Fanatic: Bringing the book World War Z to the big screen could not have been an easy process. What do you think you learned about yourself along the way?

Marc Forster: It’s interesting with this film, you read the book and I love the book. But, I have to make a film with more of a narrative structure than the book has. It is different people talking about surviving this zombie apocalypse. I sought to create a companion piece that respects the book while still trying to capture its spirit. On this journey, it is amazing, when you’re making a big movie like this -- you have to have things to come back to the character. The lead character, played by Brad Pitt, has to have something he’s fighting for to come back to. So, for me, it’s always about getting back to that essence. Even when I’m shooting day in, day out with thousands of extras and trying to create mass hysteria… it always has to be about the small details and decisions that the character makes because that will ultimately make the audience connect to it. And with the spectacle added in, it keeps that character grounded and that connection to the audience that a movie audience needs. That’s something that I really learned in this picture.

Movie Fanatic: Obviously the weight of the film is on the shoulders of Brad Pitt in World War Z. Yes, he’s a huge movie star. Yes, he’s incredibly talented. But, what was it about him that was perfect to carry your movie?

World War Z Photo

Marc Forster: He’s very charismatic. The thing is, and why I think people are drawn to him, is that he is so powerful as an everyday man versus an action hero. And we see that when he makes the decision to stay and protect his family or try to “save the world.” You can’t protect your family, unless you do the other. Ultimately, he always goes back to how he carries the dramatic and connects with that. That’s really important. If this was only about the character’s mission, then the character itself becomes hollow. It becomes about your internal journey about who you are. I think Brad’s able to portray these moments in silence so beautifully that you connect with him and understand what he’s going through. Very few people can do that.

Movie Fanatic: What was the greatest triumph for you filming World War Z?

Marc Forster: The last day in Malta -- which is where we shot the whole Israel sequence with the airfield when they stopped the plane. I felt on that day that it was a very physical scene. We were waiting for the sun to get lower in the sky because I wanted to shoot into the sun as they were running to the plane. To see that big plane coming around the corner there and you have them running across the airfield -- I wanted to achieve the turning point of the movie. And that day when we shot that scene, it was like, “We finished the Israel sequence!” And it went exactly the way I had it in my head. I got all the visuals. I got all the emotional beats I wanted. It wasn’t even the scene itself. It was what we all had accomplished.

Movie Fanatic: You said you’re a fan of the book, as so many are. A lot of people have taken on the challenge of adapting a book. But you had a very specific challenge with World War Z turning it into a narrative that would work on film. Were you ever concerned about the reaction from people?

World War Z Blu-Ray

Marc Forster: You have to put it out of your head. You’re totally aware that you’re dealing with a book that’s beloved, but also a genre that has lots of fans and you know that you can’t please everybody. You know some people will be disappointed and some people will be critical because of the zombies. There are slow zombies. There are fast zombies through history. What I tried to do is create something unique and make a movie about a global apocalypse unlike anything we’ve seen before. That was a part I really enjoyed.

Movie Fanatic: What is it about zombie movies or apocalypse movies and stories that we just can’t get enough of?

Marc Forster: Zombies are a great mirror to society, especially in the times we’re living in today of great change and economic fear. Zombies are the best metaphor in cinema that exists. Anytime you have the backdrop of a social commentary that reflects our world, it’s something that people are drawn to.

Disconnect DVD Review: Jason Bateman Pulls the Plug

$

A truly important film has landed on DVD and Blu-Ray with Disconnect. Not only does it chronicle the role that interconnected technology has had in revolutionizing our lives, but also its role in harming them and in many cases, leaving souls behind. Jason Bateman leads an ensemble cast as a father whose son appears to be doing OK. Yet, beneath his quiet teenage exterior is an insecure soul who is one internet exploitation away from doing something truly horrible.

Disconnect Blu-Ray

Meanwhile, Paula Patton and Alexander Skarsgard are a couple who find that her internet exploration has led to their identities being stolen and their entire life savings being erased. These are just two of the interweaving stories that are teased in the Disconnect trailer and it produces a film that could not be more timely and important.

Disconnect carries a weight that is strong, yet it never forgets that the movie medium is one based in entertainment. All of the actors in director Henry-Alex Rubin’s film know they are merely spokes in a wheel that only runs when all bring equal power to their roles. There is not a single weak link in the entire cast. Yet, the true star of the entire flick has to be Rubin and his uncanny talent to bring a societal issue to light that all of us engage in daily, yet few take the time to think about its repercussions.

Our theatrical Disconnect review found the film powerful, as you can tell, and yet it is one that you may want to watch over and over again… thus perfect for home video with the arrival of it on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Disconnect Jason Bateman

One of the best bonus features included in an otherwise sparse extras section is the audio commentary given by Rubin. Given that film is a director’s medium and the Disconnect story is one that is so driven by its helmer, his insight while watching the film is priceless. We would caution to add the audio commentary after witnessing the movie with its own narrative a first time. There are so many layers to this cinematic commentary on our society, that we would not want the viewer to be distracted by Rubin’s comments.

Yet, with a second or third viewing, hearing Rubin’s take on our society -- as portrayed in his film -- is a welcome addition.

Meanwhile, the behind-the-scenes featurette is aptly named: Making the Connections: Behind the Scenes of Disconnect. Yet, it leaves us wanting a little more insight into the making of this powerful statement on our times.

Paramount Pictures has released the latest poster for the next chapter of Johnny Knoxville’s Jackass, if you will. Bad Grandpa stars Knoxville as the ornery eighty-something Irving Zisman.

The film is in the Jackass vein of hidden camera pranks played on unsuspecting folks, and this time out, the protagonist is Knoxville’s Zisman. As we see in the poster promoting the October 25 release, he may have had a few too many beers and it’s time for a nap.

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa Movie Poster

Fresh off the Zisman gets a ride Bad Grandpa poster and the Bad Grandpa trailer, audiences should now have a pretty good idea about what to expect with the latest from Knoxville, that out-there prankster!

Independence Day 2: Roland Emmerich Updates “Bigger Picture”

Given the news that Independence Day 2 is moving forward, it’s hardly surprising that Will Smith expressed interest. Why would the breakout star of the first film miss out on a chance to relive some glory while banking some bucks?! The original film’s director and the sequel’s creative master, Roland Emmerich, talked to UK’s Empire and gave the world an update on where we’re at with the long talked about, finally progressing Independence Day 2.

Independence Day Photo

"I should get the script pretty soon. Then I'll try to get it into good shape for one or two months and, if that happens, we'll announce it and start production. We've created a mythology around these aliens, which is really cool,” Emmerich said.

“You have to create a mythology because people want to see a bigger picture."

Even if Emmerich would like the Independence Day world to move past the second film with a release date scheduled of July 3, 2015, he said that will be decided by box office. That is unlike James Cameron's plans for Avatar sequels!

"We'll only do the first part because we want to have the audience decide if they want to see the second,” he added. “Otherwise it feels arrogant."

Imagine that, a director listening to his audience!

The Expendables 3: Kelsey Grammer Joins Cast

The latest star to join the crowded cast of The Expendables 3 is Kelsey Grammer! The film is currently shooting in Bulgaria with new additions Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas. So, who will he play and how will it fit into the story?

Kelsey Grammar

His character name is Bonaparte, and it is a role that was once offered to Nicolas Cage. Hey, one of these days Cage will be in a The Expendables movie!

So, Bonaparte was a mercenary and we’re guessing he was somehow involved with the Expendables crew and his participation could go two ways: He could be joining the guys and helping the cause, or he is on the side of bad guy Gibson battling the boys out of some sort of revenge plot.

Star and creator Sylvester Stallone has managed to make his The Expendables world one of the most star-drawing casts around. It almost makes us think that although the film is currently shooting, that casting is not done!

Grammer must also be finished shooting the other huge budget film he is attached to: Transformers: Age of Extinction.

After making a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival, August: Osage County has debuted its latest trailer. The first August: Osage County trailer may have teased the story, but viewers can really get a feel of why this film has Oscar buzz written all over it with this latest teaser.

The film that lands December 25 stars Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep as mother-daughter where the maternal influence is not all that good. See, Streep’s character is a pill-addled woman who has been less than a solid mother to Roberts’ character and throughout August: Osage County, she lets her know that very thing.

August: Osage County is based on the Tony Award bait Broadway play and also stars Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), Juliette Lewis, Sam Shepard and Dermot Mulroney

Enough Said Review: James Gandolfini Leaves on a High Note

$

This Enough Said review has to commence with an exclamation: Thank goodness they still make movies like this one starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini! It is the rare joy in recent years to find a romantic comedy that is equally smart, savvy, reflects reality circa 2013 and yes… is romantic and funny.

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss James Gandolfini Enough Said

Louis-Dreyfus stars as Eva, a single mother raising her daughter who hardly makes time for dating. She is content readying her daughter for college in the fall and soaking in those last moments before things permanently change. Gandolfini is Albert, and he is kind of living a similar life. He is divorced from his wife and is consumed with fighting the empty nest syndrome by making sure everything’s perfect for his daughter as she heads off to study in New York City.

The pair meet at a party where Louis-Dreyfus was almost forced to go by her best friends, played by Toni Collette and Ben Falcone. It is there, as seen in the Enough Said trailer, where Louis-Dreyfus and Gandolfini each agree that there is no one there who either is attracted to… yet these two find themselves out on a date soon after.

There is something compelling Albert and Eva to at least go out to dinner. They have a great time, but Louis-Dreyfus feels little chemistry... at least not yet!

Meanwhile, she makes a contact at that previously mentioned party named Marianne (Catherine Keener). See, Eva is a masseuse and Marianne is having shoulder problems. The two become fast friends and as also previewed in the trailer, Eva discovers Albert is Marianne’s ex-husband. And we're off...

Louis-Dreyfus has not made a film in nine years while she has continued her success as a TV comic actress. She has said that she was waiting for the right role in the right film and wouldn’t “settle.” Enough Said was so worth waiting for because this is a role that writer-director Nicole Holofcener had to have crafted with the former Seinfeld star in mind. She fits it like a glove.

Enough Said Julia Louis-Dreyfus James Gandolfini

There’s an uncomfortable-ness to her portrayal of Eva that permeates throughout and produces much of the laughs. She is uncanny and it is a treasure to witness her in a role where she explores every corner brilliantly while still being part of the ensemble that is brilliantly cast in Enough Said.

And then there’s Gandolfini. Yes, it is one of his last roles as Gandolfini recently passed. And what a high note to leave the world truly missing your glorious talent. The actor is soft-spoken and rough around the edges -- but all lovable -- and we pull for his Albert and Eva to make it work, despite the obvious issues with friends and romantic entanglements.

Plus, Gandolfini and Louis-Dreyfus' chemistry is so strong, even evident on that first Enough Said poster!

In the end, Enough Said is a smart, unpredictable (a rarity these days) film that makes you fall in love with it, its characters… and all while laughing hysterically throughout. It may seem cliche, but Enough Said will make you laugh, cry and leave the theater enriched for the experience.

Stan Lee Talks Marvel Movie Wish List: Black Panther and More!

Stan Lee is working with Doritos on a contest that will give one lucky winner the chance to “co-direct” Avengers: Age of Ultron with Joss Whedon. While talking about the contest recently with TooFab, he was asked a question that we all want answers to: What Marvel universe superheroes can we expect in the future that we have not seen yet?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Stan Lee

“They are going to do the Black Panther,” he said. Wait… what?! We asked Morris Chestnut about that and he said he was still in the running for the part. Movie Fanatic could not be more pleased that appears to be moving forward.

Now, Kevin Feige runs Marvel Studios and he has final say. But, one has to believe that what Lee says has merit... after all, these are characters he created.

So, what else did the Marvel man say was coming down the pipeline from Marvel, movie-wise?

“They are going to use Doctor Strange. They are going to do Ant-Man (Who should play Ant-Man?),” Lee added. “They are going to do the Guardians of the Galaxy. And they’ll probably do the Inhumans.”

And what about a female-centered superhero movie… is that in our future?

“Well, probably at one time they’ll make a movie of the Black Widow (currently played by Scarlett Johansson, who will be in Captain America: The Winter Soldier),” Lee said. “The thing is, women like these movies as much as the guys, so we don’t have to knock ourselves out to find a female.”

And while we've got Lee on the brain... check out all of his movie cameos in one video!

Rush Review: Ron Howard Revs Our Engines

$

After witnessing the majesty of Rush, it is honestly hard to believe it took this long to bring the true story of the James Hunt and Niki Lauda rivalry to the big screen. Perhaps it was fate working its magic as Movie Fanatic cannot imagine anyone other than director Ron Howard capturing the Formula 1 racing battle with Chris Hemsworth showing some serious acting chops as Hunt and Daniel Bruhl making a career announcement as Lauda.

Rush Stars Chris Hemsworth

In the mid to late 1970s, Formula 1 racing had no bigger stars than the Austrian Lauda and the Brit, Hunt. Their entanglements began early as both were Formula 3 drivers coming up. Hunt was immediately put off by Lauda using money to “buy” his way into racing while Lauda seemed to resent Hunt’s living the lifestyle that epitomized that era of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Lauda saw Hunt as a real rival, and if he ever got serious… he could be a true challenge.

They both made their way to the Formula 1 big leagues and that is where there tete-a-tete went global. As seen in the Rush trailer, in one of their races, Lauda would barely escape with his life from a fiery crash. It would be that moment where Hunt would take over Lauda in the standings, pushing towards being that year’s champion. The Austrian sat in his hospital room, “driven” by what he saw Hunt doing and utterly determined to make it back into a car.

Howard weaves the extracurricular activities of these two men effortlessly throughout his film. Olivia Wilde plays Hunt’s wife Suzy Miller, although their union was short-lived, while Alexandra Maria Lara is uncanny as Marlene Lauda. Each is married to a man who is thriving in a vocation where at least two drivers die each year. That fact is painted impeccably by Howard.

Then, there are the two leads. As Lauda and Hunt do their competitive dance back and forth over the course of the film, so too do Hemsworth and Bruhl. Each seizes the moment that has been presented to them in this most astounding of true tales of rivals willing to face death in order to prove they are better than the other. Hemsworth is stripped of Thor’s hammer and turns in a performance that shows this guy has some serious mettle.

And Bruhl is a revelation. We will soon see him in The Fifth Estate and we believe that this Spanish actor is on his way to becoming a sensation. His Lauda is a study in determination in the face of adversity. Sure, he entered the sport with money. But, bucks don’t buy talent and pure grit. And through Bruhl’s characterization, we get to see all those sides of Lauda… and much more.

Daniel Bruhl Chris Hemsworth Rush

Howard manages to pull in fans who do not enjoy auto racing in the slightest and the audience becomes fully sucked into the drama. The director has made it breathtaking, and more importantly, allows the viewer to feel what these racers are experiencing.

In many ways, Rush is the most unlike-Ron Howard movie of the man’s esteemed career. When witnessing a film of his, it is of the utmost quality, but you know you’re watching a Ron Howard work. But, not with Rush and perhaps that is because he is able to get out of the way of the drama and powerful characters that pop off the screen. Maybe it is because the story at the root of Rush is one that compels all its own.

Whatever the reason, our Rush review finds that the true story rivets around every turn and gets our engines revving well into the red.

Prisoners Review: Hugh Jackman & Jake Gyllenhaal Give Their Best

$
0
0

Prisoners is so much more than a take justice into your own hands movie. Director Denis Villeneuve has weaved a web that sizzles and simmers upon a multitude of layers. Hugh Jackman is a father whose daughter disappears, along with his friend and neighbor’s daughter. That is merely scratching the surface of the Prisoners plot.

Prisoners Stars Hugh Jackman

One Thanksgiving, Jackman’s Keller Dover and his wife Grace (Maria Bello) are over at their family friends' home for the holiday meal. It is established that Franklin and Nancy Birch (Terrence Howard and Viola Davis) and the Dovers share young daughters around the same age as well as Dover’s son and Birch’s daughter both being teenagers.

When the two youngsters leave the Birch home to head to the Dovers' for a quick moment… they never return.

What truly begins the terrifying journey that is teased in the Prisoners trailer is how screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski’s story immediately takes the audience into the horror that is the first moments when a child disappears. We’ve all seen plenty of films and TV programs that chronicle the search for a child. But, rarely has it taken the immediacy of the first moments of Prisoners.

There is panic. There is horror. There is worry. There are a myriad of emotions, and they are all on display through the powerful performances that are just getting started by Jackman, Bello, Howard and Davis on this cinematic journey.

Then, we meet Jake Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki. He is assigned to the case and although he is doing everything he can… we sense that the families -- particularly Keller -- does not think that it is enough.

A suspect is arrested, Paul Dano’s Alex Jones. He has the mental ability of a ten-year-old and when it is determined that he could not have committed the crime, he is let go. It is then that the morality questions start coming at the audience with the rapid fire nature of an emotional machine gun. How far would you go when it comes to the safety of your children? And that is merely the first chapter of this intricate study in human nature and how far our society has supposedly come interpersonally since we were drawing on cave walls.

Jackman is astounding. He has never given a performance of such power in his life. That is saying something -- merely months after he wowed us in Les Miserables. And then there is Gyllenhaal. What begins as a somewhat routine investigation quickly spirals into an emotional roller coaster that finds the young actor delving deeper than he ever has before. His detective exhibits a menagerie of frustration, determination, defeat and self righteousness that will either ultimately get these girls killed or save their lives. It is his most powerful work of his career as well.

Prisoners Jake Gyllenhaal Viola Davis Terrence Howard

There is a razor thin line between right and wrong in Prisoners that is continually being altered as each frame sizzles for its audience. Twists and turns in the plot arise and abate leaving the viewer not only continually guessing, but also gasping as the clock ticks and the moment those girls disappeared inches further and further into the past.

Our Prisoners review believes that the film is an “almost” masterpiece. It is also one of those films that is honestly difficult to watch. Villeneuve’s movie may not be one that you can see again, but it is so thick with resonance, that merely one viewing will stick with its audience for a lifetime.

J.J. Abrams Breaks Star Wars Silence: Series is Like “Religion”

There is no way J.J. Abrams did not know the world of Star Wars was filled with passionate fans when he took the job as director of Star Wars Episode VII. And it also is no surprise that since he scored the rarest of positions as the person who will shepherd the most beloved franchise of all-time into a new chapter, Abrams has been quite quiet.

The entire project has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced that Disney bought Lucasfilm and Star Wars Episode VII was on its way.

J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness Event

So, one can imagine the joy when -- in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly -- he actually commented on the gig for the first time. And it was those fans that came up first.

“It’s been nice seeing how important [Star Wars] is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people. We all know that [George Lucas'] dream has become almost a religion to some people,” Abrams said.

Yup, it’s up there with a religion and the fact that Abrams has embraced that fact gives us credence that something truly special will be coming at us in 2015. “I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real -- to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was eleven years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

And while rumors as to casting continue to become a sport -- such as yesterday's about Saoirse Ronan and Benedict Cumberbatch getting close to a deal -- Abrams reported on the progress of the next chapter in the Star Wars universe. The helmer, who recently gave us Star Trek Into Darkness, said that the feel of his Star Wars is still a work in progress. “It’s going to be an evolving thing," he admitted.

"I would say we are working really hard to make a movie that feels as emotional and authentic and exciting as possible. Whatever your favorite Star Wars movie is and how to compare it is really sort of subjective.”

So, tell us… what;s your favorite Star Wars movie?

Gwyneth Paltrow Shares Thoughts on Iron Man and Sci-Fi

When we spoke to Gwyneth Paltrow for Thanks for Sharing, the star was asked about some comments she made recently about being “not interested” in sci-fi… and that includes her work in films such as Iron Man. She sought to clarify those concepts and even delved deeper into how much fun it is to play in that world.

Iron Man 3 Gwyneth Paltrow

“It’s not that I’m not interested. It’s just that I don’t get it. I’m not intelligent enough to appreciate sci-fi. I think I’m missing something or maybe I just have a vagina,” Paltrow said and laughed. “That may be the problem.”

The actress went on to report that she likes to have roles, like in Thanks for Sharing, that strike a chord in other ways, as well as those that are based in films that are bombastic and fun... such as her recent turn in Iron Man 3, that even saw her donning the suit!

“A movie like this, which is really about something, is very intriguing. I love doing the Iron Man movies, don’t get me wrong, and I love working with Robert Downey Jr., but this kind of thing is just a whole other kettle of fish. I love the fact that this movie is about what we should all be doing, which is bumping up against our damage and seeing what’s holding us back and keeping us from being whole people,” Paltrow said.

“You can look for metaphors and stuff in a movie like Iron Man about triumph and different archetypes, but with a movie like this it’s nice to do something that’s so intelligent and original and kind of forward.”

She stressed that both give her something creatively and professionally that enhance her life. “I don’t prefer one over the other,” Paltrow said.  “I loved doing Iron Man and I love doing action. I had an amazing time doing special effects and I had never really done that kind of thing before and I absolutely loved it.”

But, she also enjoys working in an ensemble like she has in Thanks for Sharing. “I also absolutely love working with these actors and saying these amazing words,” she added. “I’m very lucky that I get to do both.”

Gravity TV Spot: Time Is Running Out

We have to say that the publicity campaign for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity has been truly out of this world. Further proof of that fact arrived today in Movie Fanatic’s inbox in the form of the latest TV spot. From the first Gravity trailer through today’s clip… there is something about it that is simultaneously uplifting, disheartening, thrilling and terrifying.

Sandra Bullock gets this particular trailer all to herself. And although co-star George Clooney is a huge part of the movie, Gravity is all about Bullock. What she does makes you wonder what other levels of awesomeness she has in her after her recent success in The Heat and, of course, her Oscar-winning turn in The Blind Side.

Although we cannot say too much about Gravity just yet… the October 4 landing film will be seen as a game changer when all is said and done.

Thanks for Sharing Review: Sex Addiction as Comedy?

Thanks for Sharing has the most difficult of tasks and actually manages to handle it with a certain amount of grace. The film from writer-director Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right) is an ensemble comedy with heaps of drama about a sex addiction group and their journey through sobriety and its many pratfalls.

Mark Ruffalo Gwyneth Paltrow Thanks for Sharing

The Thanks for Sharing cast is top notch. But, the movie’s lead is truly Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers). We learn that he has been sober for five years and that when he begins a relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow, he is not too eager to return to that “dark place.” That’s just one aspect of the film that is truly interesting. How does one return to the dating world while a sex addict? As the Thanks for Sharing trailer shows, it is not easy. But, then again, our culture’s way of life cannot be easy for those afflicted with this disease.

Blumberg does an impeccable job showcasing that as a simple walk down the street can set one off. The Victoria’s Secret ads, half-dressed mannequins in store windows and even the close proximity of people together on the subway are all triggers that can return one to the depths of addiction.

Ruffalo and Paltrow are just one facet of this ensemble. Josh Gad (Jobs, The Internship) is astounding as a man who is in a sex addiction support group because of a court mandate. We don’t know exactly why, but that is not necessary. The audience is simply shown why by something he does at his job as an emergency room doctor. He’s good at his job, but that does not mean he will be able to keep it due to his addiction.

Gad’s character becomes fast friends with one of the few females in his support group, played by Alecia Moore (otherwise known as Pink). The two of them possess a friendly chemistry that is heartwarming and oftentimes hilarious. Honestly, we would love to see these two together in other films in the future!

Then there is the Tim Robbins-led storyline. He’s a father who has not exactly been there for his child (Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit). He and his wife have managed to not only make it through his sex addiction, but also his alcohol addiction. Robbins is somewhat of an “expert” and serves as a sponsor and mentor to many. We adore Robbins and Fugit is astounding in the role of the neglected and fellow addict son. But, it may be one storyline too many with this element that takes a bit of weight away from the rest of the story.

But, what Thanks for Sharing should be given major kudos for is how it handles the delicate and rarely pursued subject onscreen of sex addiction. There are dark moments. There are light moments. But, then again… that is life. And for someone grappling with any kind of addiction, our Thanks for Sharing review finds that has to ring true.
