Godzilla TV Spots: A Force of Nature Has Awakened

$

Warner Bros. has released not one, but two TV spots that give us never-before-seen footage from Godzilla!

The monster will crash into theaters May 16 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D (might we suggest seeing it in this format!) and until then, each successive Godzilla TV spot has us more and more intrigued!

And these two latest ones have the potential to drop quite a few jaws!

The two spots are entitled Lies and Secrets and it is too perfect that they were released together. As Bryan Cranston narrates, it is clear that the government is hiding something. This is no natural disaster. This is a force of nature, and it has awakened.

Godzilla also stars Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen (who will soon be seen together as twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Fargo Blu-Ray Review: You Betcha It's Great!

In 1996 a little movie called Fargo arrived on screens and immediately took moviegoers by storm. The Coen brothers long had a fan base who treasured their films, but there was something about the "aw shucks" landscape of their murder story that audiences adored and Oscar did too, awarding it numerous nominations, including Best Picture, and giving its star, Frances McDormand, an Oscar for Best Actress.

Fargo Blu-Ray

As the Coen brothers went on to make one of our favorites -- that you can discover when you watch The Big Lebowski online -- and most recently Inside Llewyn Davis, we’re looking back in a stellar upgrade to one of their best works.

Fargo is not only coming back in the form of a TV show over on FX, but it’s getting an upgrade and a very special release on Blu-Ray and digital download.

The thing that is most striking -- besides rediscovering a movie that is as classic as they come -- is the remastered film has never looked or sounded better. And with Roger A. Deakins handling the cinematography, the film finally has the format worthy of the Coen brothers’ go-to cinematic artist.

Most know the story (that gave us those fabulous Fargo quotes) of a small town car salesman who hires two socially challenged thugs (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife so he can get some ransom from his rich father-in-law. But, things go completely wrong and bodies start piling up, which leads our favorite super pregnant police chief Marge (McDormand) to explore the case.

Given that the film’s true improvement is its crisp picture, the feature audio commentary by Deakins is utterly priceless. To be able to see what we’re watching in the film through the eyes of the man who shot it is a fan of Fargo’s dream. That snow-covered, mostly barren landscape truly comes alive with Deakins’ insight.

Carl Showalter Picture

We also appreciated, as a longtime fan of the movie, the Trivia Track feature. It delves deeper into the Coen brothers' Midwestern world and it’s fun to see how well you know this instant classic. And for kicks, checking out the theatrical trailer and a TV spot shows how the buzz for this Oscar-winning film truly got going.

It may be almost two decades since we visited Fargo, but the arrival of the film on Blu-Ray has us simultaneously feeling like we’ve never left while possessing the sense that we’re seeing it for the first time with a much needed pair of glasses making the picture more gorgeous than ever.

And we have this version when you watch Fargo online!

Under the Skin Review: Scarlett Johansson Kills It

$
0
0

Scarlett Johansson is in two movies out this weekend. The first, as you can see from our Captain America: The Winter Soldier review, is absolutely astounding and we call it the “best Marvel movie ever.” The second is Under the Skin, and it could not be more different.

Under the Skin Scarlett Johansson

As teased in the Under the Skin trailer, Johansson stars as a… something. We’re not sure what she is, but she is definitely not human. We don’t want to spoil anything, so that’s about all we’ll say about her character – other than she is a cold-blooded killer who stalks, targets and kills single men with no family or friends. Why, you ask? Well, that’s central to the plot and also plays significantly into the title of the film itself.

The film is from Jonathan Grazer (Sexy Beast), from a screenplay by Walter Campbell, based on the chilling novel by Michael Faber. It takes place in Scotland, and the landscape is beautifully shot and a stark contrast to what is going on in this picture.

The audience will spend most of this film trying to figure out Johansson’s motivation, and for that, we give the filmmakers the utmost of credit. It is disturbing to watch, but yet you cannot look away. There are numerous scenes that are absolutely gorgeous, yet what is going on during these scenes is an absolute horror show. Under the Skin is one of those movies that you will not soon forget, and in fact, there are numerous images that will haunt you for weeks to come. We can think of several right now that still haunt our dreams.

Johansson’s character lures these men through the promise of sex and it winds up being their demise. They believe they are getting as lucky as can be and are truly the most unlucky of souls on the planet at that particular moment. Again and again, you will ask why -- and even though we have seen the film, there still is no answer.

Under the Skin Poster

And that is the magic and the detraction of Under the Skin.

Movie Fanatic does not need all of our films to provide answers to all the questions. But, our Under the Skin review finds that there are absolutely no conclusions to be drawn from what is seen. In many ways, Glazer deserves credit for that. But with one line of dialogue, a motivation could have been more firmly established.

This is not a film that feels like its character kills for no purpose at all. There are plenty of those, but Under the Skin is not it. As the film’s final credits roll, the viewer will likely find (and need) some sort of something to try to make it all make some sort of sense.

But then again, if you think about it, no killing makes any sense.

Weekend Movie Preview: April 4, 2014

This time out on the weekend movie preview, there is an elephant in the room and it's name is Captain America.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on screens and it is the first Cap adventure since he helped save New York in The Avnegers. Scarlett Johansson comes with Cap from The Avengers and plays a huge part in the story, but that is not Johansson's only movie this weekend.

She also stars in Under the Skin and there is a third film out, the Morgan Freeman narrated nature IMAX doc, Island of Lemurs: Madagascar

Captain America The Winter Soldier: Right off the bat, as we stated in our Captain America: The Winter Soldier review, this is the best Marvel Studios movie yet. And yes, that is saying something. S.H.I.E.L.D. is under attack and Cap is helped in the save the day by Johansson's Black Widow and new to the Marvel cinematic universe, Anthony Mackie's the Falcon.

Both are welcomed additions to this second solo Cap movie and it simply cooks. The action is astounding. The plot is intense. And it has Robert Redford! Doesn't that say something about how far comic book movies have come?

Island of Lemurs Madagascar: Freeman narrates his second nature doc in a row for the filmmakers behind Born to be Wild. This time out the spotlight is on the Lemurs of Madagascar. They are endangered and this 40 minute IMAX spectacle takes us inside their world. As our Island of Lemurs: Madagascar review reported, it is astounding how powerful this film is, all while being supremely entertaining.

Under the Skin: Johansson has her second film out this weekend, and Under the Skin could not be more different than the second Captain America movie! She plays a woman who stalks and kills single men with no family or friends. Why? We dont know, which we explore deeper in our Under the Skin review. It's kind of frustrating not knowing why she does what she does, but then again, is there anything that could possibly explain the act of the kill?

Feel like staying in this weekend? Several fantastic films have landed on digital download that you can witness right now. Watch Anchorman 2 online, watch 47 Ronin online and a classic arrives on hi-def home that can be seen when you watch Fargo online.

Fans of the 1985 classic The Goonies have been clamoring for a sequel for decades now.

They are eager to discover what happened to the crew that included Stef, Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, Brand, Andy and Sloth. Director Richard Donner has uttered the words that will set off Goonies celebrations across the globe.

The Goonies Poster

When asked whether he would ever do a sequel to a comic book film, he said, “If you call Goonies a comic book, we’re doing a sequel.”

The original cast is eager to return -- look for The Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin to return, and you know that Corey Feldman will return. Chances are good that Martha Plimpton will be back, but will Josh Brolin?

Donner directed the film that gave us these fantastic The Goonies quotes, and it was produced by Steven Spielberg.

Point Break Remake: Producers Promise "Extraordinary Footage"

$

It was recently announced that Point Break was getting a remake and that Gerard Butler would be Bodhi and Luke Bracey will be Johnny Utah. While at the press day for Transcendence starring Johnny Depp, Alcon producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove gave us an update on where they’re at with the Point Break redo. And it seems, they’ve already started shooting and it is the “greatest footage we’ve ever gotten at Alcon.”

Point Break Poster

The film features the relationship between Bodhi and Utah as its central core, but the extreme sports nature will be greatly expanded. The adrenaline junkies will not just be knocking off banks in L.A. as the original did. They will circle the globe and as such, visuals of them snowboarding in Europe, surfing in Australia and more, Johnson promises, will blow audiences away.

“We’ve shot some extraordinary footage with our surfers. And we were in the Italian Alps with the greatest extreme snowboarders in the world, shooting footage. We’ve actually been in photography on the film, beginning our stunt work with our real athletes,” Johnson said.

“This is a movie with a lot of stunts and no stunt people in it because the stunts are way too dangerous for people who are stunt people. We have real athletes who do this, like Jeb Corliss, who’s the greatest wing-suiter in the world. His team will be doing work for us, over the summer, in Switzerland with motocross.”

Johnson also admitted that Butler and Bracey will get to work this summer. “Principal photography starts in June,” he said.

When asked about the story and its parallels to the Kathryn Bigelow-directed original, the producers said that there will be many similarities in terms of the “bromance,” but that it will greatly expand on many levels.

“The script only shares in common with the original the characters and the nature of the character dynamic between Utah and Bodhi. Everything else about the movie is different. While we do have surfing in the film, it is only a subset of the extreme sports that we deal with, including free-climbing, motocross, wing-suiting and so forth,” Johnson said. Proof of that is seen even in these Point Break quotes.

The landscape of Point Break is also expanding. “The movie is being shot in 10 countries across the globe.”

Johnson was clearly taken with Bigelow’s original and said that it was “really ahead of its time.” This was a film that predated the X-Games!

Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in Point Break

“That was really at the infancy of what extreme sports would become. This movie is on a much broader scale around the world, and the narrative of the movie is completely different. What we found fascinating about the original film, and is preserved in this, is the character work and the relationship between Bodhi and Utah, who are these two gentlemen on opposite sides of the law, but yet, at the same time, share a common bond. That’s the one element that the two movies share.”

Given the expansion of 3D technology in the time since the original, we wondered if the film would be shot in 3D, or even presented in 3D.

“We won’t shoot it in 3D. We’ll convert it,” Kosove said. “One of the benefits of the smaller cameras is that you can really put the audience in with the action. When you start shooting in 3D, the camera rigs are very large.”

But, will there be criminals sporting presidents' masks in this Point Break?!

“Maybe -- it’s tricky,” Johnson said. “We’ve thought about this a lot because the world of remaking movies, in truth, is a pretty risky proposition. A lot of them don’t work, as we have been regularly reminded. So, the question then becomes, ‘What’s the raison d’être for remaking a movie that wasn’t a giant hit, but is an iconic film that many people have seen?’ I would argue that the difference is that the world in which a Point Break can exist today, as compared to almost 25 years ago, is profoundly different,” Johnson said.

“Then, it was a few guys surfing in the Santa Monica bay and robbing a couple of banks, as compared to what Jeb Corliss does or what these big wave surfers do today. So, we felt that we truly could remake the movie in a completely unique and different way than the original film, and that’s why we’ve decided to do it. But the character work in the original film, which ultimately sustains any movie, no matter how glorious the bells and whistles are, and the bromance, is fascinating. That is a central part of our story, even though everything else about it is different.”

Check out why we love the original so much when you watch Point Break online.

Captain America The Winter Soldier Exclusive: Sebastian Stan on "Overwhelming" Experience

Sebastian Stan talks exclusively with Movie Fanatic about the nuances of being the title character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Star Sebastian Stan

Stan also dishes the challenges of portraying someone who in some ways is a secret for audience, while simultaneously for fans of the comic book and Captain America: The First Avenger -- it is a reveal that is hardly a surprise. Yet, through Stan’s performance, it is a shocking moment, even for this longtime Cap fan!

Stan also chats the honor of appearing in a movie with the legend that is Robert Redford, and how this box office record holder will serve as a diary for him years from now chronicling where he was in his life at this moment in time.

Oh, and don’t miss what he said about the fact that the Winter Soldier becomes Captain America in the comic books and his thoughts on that prospect for the movies.

Movie Fanatic: As someone who has been along for this entire ride, what was your first reaction when you saw the full Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

Sebastian Stan: I was a bit overwhelmed, for sure. When you’re seeing the movie for the first time, it’s interesting. It’s a process. You read the script, you shoot it over a period of time… like you, I found myself watching the movie and enjoying the movie as opposed to thinking about myself in it. I think that is a great indicator that I got lost in the plot and character. It was so clever. When I read the script, I knew it was smart. When I was reading it, I kept having to turn back and seeing if I read that right. On the way to the screen, so many things can happen to a movie. But, Marvel really nailed it.

Movie Fanatic: You, as a fan of this world, what did it mean to you that you are, in many ways, playing the title character?

Sebastian Stan: It didn’t register so much because -- though it felt great to be in the title -- the Winter Soldier is being introduced to some extent. But, in my own modest ways, I felt it was an ensemble. I was just happy to be a part of it with those actors.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Chris Evans Sebastian Stan

Movie Fanatic: It speaks so much to how far comic book movies have come, as I stated in our Captain America: The Winter Soldier review, to have Robert Redford in it. You shared several intense scenes with him…

Sebastian Stan: You know, it’s interesting... You think, "What if he wasn’t in the film?" It’s almost like you can’t see anyone else at this point. When he read it, he saw something in it. He’s not doing comic book movies. He’s not doing a lot of movies period. He had this and All Is Lost, at pretty much the same time. It was amazing. I remember being in my car listening to the song This Is the Day by The The and I was just blasting it when I heard he was doing it.

Movie Fanatic: As an actor who has studied this art form, what did it mean to you to share scenes with him, and what did you take away from the experience?

Sebastian Stan: It takes you right back to acting 101. You feel all the emotions – you’re grateful, somehow you belong there at the same time. You feel scared, challenged. It all comes from a positive place. I think in this world of acting sometimes, it’s special when those moments happen.

Movie Fanatic: Thirty years from now, where will getting slapped hard by Robert Redford rank for you?

Sebastian Stan: [Laughs] It will be up there!

Sebastian Stan Stars in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Movie Fanatic: I think this speaks volumes about the entire Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie. When it was announced that you were cast as the Winter Soldier and we all know your role as Bucky in the first movie... still when the mask comes off, I let out a gasp. But, I should have known who you were. How did you balance what you played in the first movie with what you did in this one?

Sebastian Stan: You knew who it was… but still. It’s such a moment, who the hell is Bucky? It’s one of those things -- fortunately I wasn’t pacing around trying to say the line a million ways. There were many times where I felt that the costume and the way the Winter Soldier looked was so specific. It had such a presence. Often the times that I actually stepped back and let his presence speak for itself, it would help me. There were a few moments where you have to see a trace of a person you recognize. I had a few scenes to be able to do that. Sometimes I didn’t know how I was going to do it. It was just instinctive.

Movie Fanatic: Years from now, is there one moment you will go back to more than others? Or, is it hard to choose?

Sebastian Stan: The thing is, I always look at the experience at working on a movie, for me, it’s a diary of your own life at that time. Every time that I’m watching that movie after years, I will remember where I was at in my life and my head and my family.

Movie Fanatic: In the comics, later on, the Winter Soldier becomes Captain America. Did you go there in your head?

Sebastian Stan: Of course. Because I read everything about him you can’t not go there to think about that.

Oh, that J.J. Abrams and his secretive ways! Whether with his TV work on Lost, or his working on Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the filmmaker has an uncanny ability to keep a secret.

Star Wars Official Logo

His latest secret is that his Star Wars Episode VII is already shooting! And even better, he has pretty much filled out his cast. Now, we don’t know who will be in that cast (except for Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher).

In this day and age of spoilers and news outlets getting scoops, this is some impressive news.

Sure, we heard that he will be filming Star Wars Episode VII in Iceland and Morocco, perhaps doubling for Hoth and Tatooine, but the fact that Abrams is already shooting is supremely impressive in that it has only come to light now.

So J.J., you’ve cast this puppy? Why not share who we can expect to be using the force?!

Star Wars Episode VII is due December 18, 2015.

Maybe it was how it was written. Perhaps, it was how it was played by Jake Lloyd... and maybe it was both. But young Anakin Skywalker, known as Ani, was just plain awful. .. and annoying!

Jar Jar Binks

2. Jar Jar Binks

Surprised? Hardly! Jar Jar Binks was not only annoying, but his portrayal also flirted with being a little racist. We know Lucas wanted to give the kids another fun character, but this guy?!

Yarna D'al Gargan

3. Yarna D'al Gargan

In Return of the Jedi there were many exotic characters in Jabba's lair. Yarna D'al Gargan was not exotic... just annoying.

Bail Organa

4. Bail Organa

On paper, Bail Organa should have been a compelling character. Perhaps it was how it was written or how Lucas directed star Jimmy Smits, but how it came to be in the second trilogy... Bail was stale, stiff and just frankly irked us.

General Grievous

5. General Grievous

How is General Grievous supposed to be one of the most feared villains in the Star Wars world? He coughs all the time and he appears like a frail robot who could be taken out by a blaster. We find Grievous not fear-inducing... just funny.

Jedis Who Get Wiped Out in Revenge of the Sith

6. Jedis Who Get Wiped Out in Revenge of the Sith

All those wasted Jedis! Supposedly, they're the most trained warriors in the galaxy, yet Lucas wastes hundreds of them in one scene that simply annoys us more than anything. These "soldiers" look like they just picked up a lightsaber last week!

Watto

7. Watto

That thing kept Ani and his mother as slaves. Couldn't they have just grabbed him and then beaten the crap out of him and escaped? Surely, Ani's menacing slave master could have been more... menacing?

The Neimoidians

8. The Neimoidians

If Jar Jar Binks was a slightly racially offensive effort, then we must also consider the Asian stereotypes that were truly insulting with the existence of the Neimoidians. Surely, Lucas could have done something better for these legislators.

Fode

9. Fode

Was it us, or did this guy seem completely out of place? And we get the play by play and comedic color commentary, but why not create two vastly different characters instead of having one with two heads? Just. Silly. And annoying!

Transcendence Synopsis:

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed -- to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.

Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

The music is composed by Mychael Danna, who won an Oscar for his score for Life of Pi.

Alcon Entertainment presents, in association with DMG Entertainment, a Straight Up Films production, a film by Wally Pfister, Transcendence. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Star Wars Episode VII: Peter Mayhew Back as Chewbacca!

As reported moments ago, Star Wars Episode VII is currently shooting. Casting supposedly has been pretty much set, but there is little news as to who the main players will be.

But, The Hollywood Reporter has let us know that one big piece of the puzzle has been cast -- and it is huge... literally!

Star Wars Chewbacca

Peter Mayhew will return as Chewbacca!

The actor famously filled out the Wookie suit in the first Star Wars trilogy that ran from the 1970s through the early 1980s. No word on whether the Wookie will be sporting any grey hairs, given that this Star Wars story takes place 30 years after Return of the Jedi.

Stay tuned as we feel that more casting news is coming very, very soon!

Why Wasn't Hawkeye in Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

For those of you who saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier (and judging by the box office, there are a lot of you), one question may have permeated: Where is Hawkeye?

Jeremy Renner is Hawkeye

Well, not everyone could be in the second Cap film, so says Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige. "We will discover, later, the answers to that question,” Feige told CraveOnline.

Remember, this is not The Avengers 2 -- that is coming in the form of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“It really came down to how many players can you have on the field at this time? We really wanted to bring in Falcon. We really wanted to team [Captain America] up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). We really wanted Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to have more of a part than he’s ever had in any of the other movies before.”

There were also characters that he wanted to introduce and a fan favorite as well. “We wanted, ever so briefly, to introduce Sharon Carter. And we had a fun place for Maria Hill to be involved,” Feige said.

Having Hawkeye in Captain America: The Winter Soldier would have felt more like a stunt than anything else.

“So we didn’t want to just have, ‘Hey, I’m Hawkeye! Hey, I’m Iron Man!’ We want to avoid the brief cameos of the week.”

Feige also said that those whom we have not seen since The Avengers -- look for their roles to be huge in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“Not every character from every movie is going to be in Age of Ultron, for sure,” Feige said. “But Joss Whedon is excited and for the characters you haven’t seen since the first Avengers -- like Hawkeye, like Hulk -- there’s a reason for that, and that gets showcased quite prominently in Age of Ultron.”

Paramount has released a series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaser posters that show off our four favorite Ninja Turtles, but only their hands because the star here in these one-sheets is their weapons.

So, who wields which weapon -- we'll leave it up to you to decide!

The quartet of teaser posters arrives on the heels of last week's pretty impressive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer that has us seriously intrigued for the August 8 release that comes from executive producer Michael Bay.

The reboot of the film series that truly began with the 1990 hit of the same name stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner and Will Arnett (who recently uttered those awesome The LEGO Movie quotes as Batman!).

Ghostbusters 3: Ivan Reitman Says “Many From Original Cast” Are In!

Ivan Reitman may have dropped out of directing Ghostbusters 3, but he is still heavily involved. "A lot of directors are throwing their hats in. We're starting the meetings. We're going to do it," Reitman said to People.

Ghostbusters Photo

He also said that a few “original” Ghostbusters will be involved, and that should make fans of those Ghostbusters quotes quite happy.

"There will be many people from the original cast,” Reitman said.

But, to paraphrase one of Bill Murray’s most iconic movies… What about Bill?

“You're really asking about Bill Murray, and I have no idea. All the other movies I made with Bill, he never told me he was doing it until… well, the longest was two weeks. Meatballs, he told me he was doing it the day before."

Ernie Hudson, one of the original Ghostbusters, was asked about it recently and he too said it’s happening -- although he reflected the sadness of the loss of one of the creative forces behind the franchise, Harold Ramis.

"Unfortunately Harold is not with us anymore. But it's going to happen,” Hudson said. “It's going to be really, really good, which is why it's taken so long."

Watch Ghostbusters online and see why after all these years, fans still want more!

Draft Day Exclusive: Kevin Costner On Why Sports Movies “Touch Us”

$
0

Kevin Costner is back in a sports movie, as seen in the Draft Day trailer. It reminds us why the actor -- who is known for so many great movies -- will be remembered as one of the great stars who anchored movies set in the sports landscape.

We caught up with Costner for an exclusive video interview and asked him what it was about the sports movie that is so resonant for audiences.

“You have to remember that there are a lot of movies that are made about sports… that aren’t any good,” Costner admitted. “Like a great Western, when we do a great one, it reminds us of why we like them -- they touch us in a way we don’t expect.”

In Draft Day, Costner portrays the general manager of the Cleveland Browns on the titular day. And all eyes are on him as he wheels and deals while the clock ticks.

There is much on the line, not the least of which is his job, the future of football in Cleveland and a romance with the team’s lawyer (Jennifer Garner) who seems to be the only one not questioning the moves he makes on this uber-important day.

And don’t miss our entire interview above as Costner lets us know that a Western (another genre we love him in) trilogy is on his horizon!

Remind yourself what a fantastic sports film actor Costner is and watch Field of Dreams online, check out theseBull Durham quotes and click through our slideshow below and see what our favorite Costner movies are.
