The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug DVD Review: Bring Bilbo Home

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download and it is a solid bridge for Peter Jackson between his The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug DVD

And for a film series that should be seen on the big screen, given that most people have larger TV screens, not much of the spectacle is lost with the arrival on home video. But, we still cannot recommend enough that audience witness these films even on IMAX, the largest screens on Earth! But, we digress…

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug DVD gives fans a thrilling expansion of the world that was first painted by J.R.R. Tolkien in his The Hobbit. Jackson, not only because of his work on The Lord of the Rings, but also because he is such a Tolkien aficionado, is the perfect person to stretch this Middle Earth story into three movies.

Some may have scoffed at the addition of new characters, such as Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel. But, and this is supremely surprising, the addition of the Elven warrior is an utter treat. Lilly is perfectly cast and as a fellow fan of Tolkien, she brings much to a character that was never thought of by the source material’s original author.

As we stated in our The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug review, the vision of evil that is our villain, Smaug the Dragon, is expertly imagined in Jackson’s second The Hobbit film. And to cast Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug is utter genius. In fact, he is more than just the voice -- the UK actor got in a motion capture suit (like Andy Serkis with Gollum) and the proof of its effectiveness is in the scenes our dragon has with the Hobbit sent to destroy him, Bilbo.

What is fascinating to us is how the crux of this adventure is the destruction of Smaug, and to have our hero and villain meet in the middle of our second chapter of three is a fascinating lesson in pacing. And judging by how The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ends -- we are just getting started in this battle!

When it comes to bonus features, Jackson is never one to skimp for his fans. Warner Bros. has truly put the gold standard out there with this limited collector’s edition Blu-Ray combo pack that Movie Fanatic received.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Martin Freeman Richard Armitage

The Peter Jackson Invites You to the Set double documentaries -- In the Company of the Hobbit and Peter Jackson Invites You to the Set: All in a Day’s Work– showcase the wizardry that goes into making Middle Earth excellence. You think you’ve seen this with the Peter Jackson set videos he released while making the movie? Think again!

It is truly a fascinating journey to see how Jackson had to literally create towns such as Mirkwood, Lake-town and Dale. Some of the movie’s best moments take place there, so realism is the key. And that Hobbits in a barrel action scene is some of the best ever captured. Period.

We also appreciated the featurette New Zealand: Home of Middle-Earth, Part 2. New Zealand has long fascinated us, and what we learned about Jackson’s home country from his work on The Lord of the Rings is merely the tip of the iceberg. This is a country we get a feeling even natives are still learning much about. This featurette delves deeper into the corners of his home country that Jackson traveled to find the perfect locations for his second chapter in The Hobbit saga.

Then, as a bonus and as a fan of the song itself, the music video for I See Fire by Ed Sheeran is utterly gorgeous and a welcome addition to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Guess what? We have the film right now… watch The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug online and don't miss our The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug quotes

Frozen Sequel in the Works?

Given the fact that Frozen is the highest grossing animated movie of all-time with its over $1 billion in box office sales, a sequel seems like it would be a no-brainer. But then again, Disney is not in the habit of making sequels without a compelling story. Yet, like we said: This is a slam dunk.

Frozen Elsa Still

Few movies have touched audiences young and old as Frozen did. It won both the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song Oscars at the Academy Awards.

"There’s a lot of active development. You will see Frozen in more places than you see today. … This has real franchise potential,” Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger told Variety – to the chorus of cheers by millions of fans.

“We expect to see not just new product but continued interest in this and continued impact on the bottom line for quite awhile. Its success speaks volumes on the future of animation at our company."

And lest we forget, when they finished their acceptance speech for Best Song for Let it Go, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez Lopez and Robert Lopez sang, "Happy Oscars to you. Let’s do Frozen 2!"

Could not agree more!

In the meantime, check out all our Frozen quotes and watch Frozen online.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 International Trailer: Green Goblin Gobbles Screen Time

What’s truly fascinating is how Marc Webb has said that the main villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be Jamie Foxx as Electro.

Yet, it appears that someone who has a huge role beyond being Harry Osborn is Dane DeHaan, who doubles as Green Goblin.

That much became true with the latest The Amazing Spider-Man 2 international trailer. It devotes many scenes to the green-colored monster and also gives us an impression for where the Spidey story will go for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4.

As Sony is expanding the Spider-Man universe, most likely with the Sinister Six, we could see a villain hand-off of sorts from Green Goblin to the sextet that is coming soon to theaters.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will debut in international markets before American audiences get to see it on May 2. So, look for some initial reactions then!

And be sure to be all sorts of caught up for the big summer release and watch The Amazing Spider-Man online.

Guardians of the Galaxy First Clip: Star Lord, Legendary Outlaw!

In the first clip from Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt is surprised to learn that those who wish to incarcerate him have not heard of him. "I'm Star Lord, legendary outlaw," he says. To which, Djimon Hounsou replies, "Who?"

Much of the world could probably ask the same question as Marvel has the task of introducing the world to its newest group of superheroes, and judging by the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, studio head Kevin Feige and the film's director James Gunn are well on their way to success.

Pratt is just one spoke in the wheel that comprises the Guardians of the Galaxy. Zoe Saldana is Gamora, Dave Bautista is Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper voices Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel provides the voice for Groot. They're a powerful bunch, but what we appreciate about this group of interstellar heroes is the sense of humor mixed with jaw-dropping action.

Look for Guardians of the Galaxy this summer on August 1.

As seen in that riveting Transcendence trailer, Johnny Depp stars as a scientist who uploads himself into a computer’s hard drive. And that’s when things get really interesting.

Rebecca Hall stars as his partner in science, and partner in life, and it is because of her urging that he completes the transition. Through her, we see the wonder -- and the regret.

In this latest featurette from Transcendence, Depp, Hall and director Wally Pfister talk about the promise of artificial intelligence and how the truth is we're close to making the fiction a fact.

What was so fascinating was at the press day for the film, director Pfister told us that upon talking to scientists, he learned that this science fiction will become science reality in about 30 years. So, it’s not a question of if, but when!

For years Zach Braff was asked what he would do to follow up his writing and directorial debut that is the beloved Garden State. His gift for writing was present in every single one of the Garden State quotes, and in the decade since its premiere, audiences still adore the film.

In our Zach Braff exclusive interview almost 18 months ago, he said he had a project, and now it’s come to fruition. We even have the first trailer for Wish I Was Here. It not only stars Braff, but also Kate Hudson and Josh Gad.

Focus Features has also released the film’s synopsis to give us an idea of what to expect from the film set to release July 18.

Wish I Was Here is the story of Aidan Bloom (played by Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (ages 5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them.

The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.

Watch Garden State online and remind yourselves what a gift the film is to movie fans everywhere.

Casing James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto surely didn't hurt things. And Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique is pure brilliance.

Batman Begins

10. Batman Begins

Rebooting a franchise is no easy task. But look at what Christopher Nolan did with Batman Begins and he laid the groundwork for one of the best trilogies of all time. Simply astounding.

Captain America: The First Avenger

11. Captain America: The First Avenger

What a way to introduce The Avengers! Captain America: The First Avenger took us back to the 1940s and by the end of it, we were in Times Square in modern times with Nick Fury there to help our "First Avenger" adjust to the future.

Chronicle

12. Chronicle

What an original idea! A superhero origins story as a found footage film. And it also introduced the world to the star power of Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan, both of whom have moved on to other "super" projects. Jordan is in Fantastic Four and DeHaan is in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Batman Returns

13. Batman Returns

We adore Michael Keaton as Batman, and his best turn as "The Bat" was in Tim Burton's second film. Can you imagine anyone else but Danny DeVito as the Penguin? Hardly!

Watchmen

14. Watchmen

Watchmen gets a bad rap. And thank goodness someone thought Zack Snyder did a good job with it and he got to make Man of Steel. But, don't think Watchmen is a truly great superhero movie? Watch it again.

Kick-Ass

15. Kick-Ass

What else can be said about Kick-Ass other than the average people being superheroes movie... kicks ass?!

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

16. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

When a filmmaker like Guillermo del Toro is at the helm, anything he makes ought to be great. That is certainly the case with this second chapter in the Hellboy series. And Ron Perlman as Hellboy? Give us more!

X-Men 2

17. X-Men 2

X-Men 2 is our favorite Bryan Singer movie. Period. After getting the introducing the characters business out of the way in the first X-Men, he was able to truly give us an action-packed adventure.

Unbreakable

18. Unbreakable

Unbreakable seems, at the outset, like it would be a tough sell. But with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson portraying friends who would become foes out of a superhero movie, M. Night. Shyamalan crafted an origins story that could not have been more original. And in the superhero genre, that is rare indeed.

The Dark Knight Rises

19. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is a lesson in how to effectively close out a terrific trilogy. We'll miss you, Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale -- you did Batman fans a huge solid.

Blade

20. Blade

Wesley Snipes as Blade? Yes, please... and boy, does his vampire killer leap off the pages of the comics and onto the big screen so impeccably.

Darkman

21. Darkman

Liam Neeson was Darkman in so many ways. He also showed that an anti-hero could make for one badass superhero.

Mystery Men

22. Mystery Men

Ben Stiller leads a group of average Joes to patrol the streets of their city, thinking that they're superheroes. Between their unique "powers" and the comedic charm of the cast, Mystery Men is a winner.

Man of Steel

23. Man of Steel

Most people liked Man of Steel, we LOVED it. Zack Snyder was the perfect choice to bring Superman into the 21st century and his casting of Henry Cavill as Superman, Russell Crowe as his father and Michael Shannon as General Zod makes this one "super" movie.

Oculus: Katee Sackhoff & Rory Cochrane Share Joys of “Unraveling”

In Oculus, Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane play what seem to be a happily married couple with their two kids.

But, as you can see in the Oculus trailer, when a suspicious mirror arrives in Cochrane’s office, he starts to change -- and the horror commences.

We caught up with Sackhoff (most recently of Riddick) and Cochrane (see how far he's come when you watch Dazed and Confused online) to talk about the joys of letting loose on a set that called for it.

Playing the part of someone who goes from completely normal to completely unraveled was what drew Sackhoff to the role. “It was one of the reasons I wanted to do it,” Sackhoff said.

“This complete unraveling of a person right in front of your eyes in so obvious of a way -- I was so excited!”

Cochrane concurred. “It’s always fun to play an arc. And the one thing about good writing is that they will give your characters an arc that the audience wants to follow. It’s always a pleasure,” he said.

And he also appreciated that it was a chance for Sackhoff to shine. “It’s also rare for a part for women to be written with such an arc.”

See Sackhoff killing it when you watch Riddick online and witness how she is just blowing up since Battlestar Galactica ended its mission.

Oculus hits theaters April 11.

Grudge Match DVD Review: Stallone & De Niro Get Back in the Ring

$

0

Grudge Match, on paper, might seem a bit far-fetched. But, as we stated in our theatrical Grudge Match review, the idea of Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro playing aging former boxers who get in the ring to settle a titular score, surprisingly works.

Now Grudge Match is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, and above all else, it is truly a gift for boxing fans the world over.

Grudge Match DVD

Stallone and De Niro have the fortune of having famously played boxers in films before in Rocky and Raging Bull. As such, Grudge Match director Peter Segal has footage from those films to CG together and make it look like this 30-year-old rivalry that never decided a true winner really happened. In fact, some of it (especially Raging Bull) has never been seen before now!

See, Stallone is Henry “Razor” Sharp and De Niro is Billy “The Kid” McDonnen. They are a pair of Pittsburgh boxers who fought twice back in the day. Their rivalry ignited passion for the sport that made them international sports stars. But, on the eve of their third and deciding bout (after each won one of the previous fights), Razor pulled out inexplicably and retired.

The film is light on drama -- as it should be -- and the comic potential is high given the story of two guys well past their prime heading into the ring.

The entire idea of the rematch all these years later comes from a promoter played by Kevin Hart (outstanding as usual). They’re putting together a video game of classic fights, and a fight that breaks out between the two former champs in their motion capture suits goes viral. Hart sees dollar signs. De Niro seeks revenge and Stallone… well, he’s a harder sell.

As teased in the Grudge Match trailer, the boxing scenes that close out the film are expertly shot and believable. Yes, they’re believable!

But as we stated, the Grudge Match DVD and Blu-Ray is truly a gift to boxing fans and that is because of the extraordinary bonus features. And there’s also a few fantastic features that show off the comic genius of Hart and why he’s one of the most in-demand comedic actors working today.

Robert De Niro Sylvester Stallone Grudge Match

First and foremost, the stars who are no stranger to boxing flicks get the spotlight in The Bull & The Stallion. It looks at De Niro and Stallone’s cinematic history in the ring and it is pure joy.

Both Ringside with Tyson & Holyfield and Blow for Blow with Larry Holmes are priceless features that give real-life boxing insight from former champs Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Larry Holmes. Didn’t we say this was a boxing fan's home video dream?!

Then, Hart shows off his brilliance in two features (beyond his killer Grudge Match quotes), In the Ring with Kevin Hart and Kevin Hart Unedited. Both features need to be watched to be appreciated as Hart continues to outdo himself in the comic arena on screen.

The Alternate Opening and Alternate Endings are interesting, and certainly add something to the entire joy that is the Grudge Match DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Watch Grudge Match online and enjoy this De Niro and Stallone battle -- right now!

Star Wars Episode VII: Heading Back to Tatooine!

We recently reported that Star Wars Episode VII will be shooting in both Iceland and Morocco. Those familiar with the blockbuster series know all too well what that could mean: We’re returning to Hoth and Tatooine.

Luke Skywalker on Tatooine

Now, we know for a fact that at least the latter is true.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that J.J. Abrams is in fact using Morocco as a double for Tatooine, just as George Lucas did with Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

That is huge news -- simply for no other reason than that is the planet that gave us two of the most powerful Jedi in the universe, Luke and his father Anakin. So, for Abrams to return there speaks volumes about how keen the filmmaker is to pay tribute to the past, while simultaneously looking to the future.

We missed you, Tatooine. Glad to be going back!

Draft Day Exclusive: Jennifer Garner Talks Being a Football Fanatic

As a little girl growing up in football crazy West Virginia, Jennifer Garner was swept into the frenzy that is loving the game. Given that fact, you can imagine her utter glee at starring in the football film Draft Day -- out April 11.

"As a sports fan and a sports movie fan, to be in a movie about football with Kevin Costner,” she said in our exclusive video interview as her voice went up a few octaves, “that’s the coolest thing of all. He is the best at this in the world.”

Garner also reveals to us her favorite football movie and interestingly enough, she didn’t hesitate to answer. Can you guess what it is?

The actress also answered our question: Who would she draft as number one to be her top pick as her next co-star from a field of performers that she had never worked with before?

Can you guess who that would be?

As seen in the Draft Day trailer, Garner is a lawyer (in charge of keeping the team within the salary cap – who also is in a relationship with Costner’s character) with the Cleveland Browns. And it’s on this day that General Manager Costner has to make a pick that could make or break his team’s future in the Ohio city.

Hercules Clip: Dwayne Johnson Asks “Do I Look Scared?”

$

We’ve seen Dwayne Johnson literally kill it in the Hercules trailer, and now we have our first clip to give the Brett Ratner film some true context.

In the clip, called We’ve Walked Into a Trap, Johnson is Hercules and he and his army walk onto a battlefield that appears to be littered with dead bodies. They’re not dead. They’re lying in wait -- to strike!

Besides Johnson being impeccably cast as the hero, Hercules also stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes and the legendary John Hurt.

Look for Hercules in theaters July 25 which finds the classic hero being haunted by his violent past. He becomes a mercenary and with his five closest friends, they travel ancient Greece offering his expertise in bringing foes to their knees.

But one particular mission will find our hero having to channel all that made him great… and feared.

We’re seriously intrigued about this one because it is based on the Radical Studios graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

And might we add that we think that a hero as large as Hercules is worthy of two films in one calendar year, after Kellan Lutz played the part in The Legend of Hercules.

13 Movies With More than 200 F-Bombs: I Swear!

$

With certain filmmakers you can expect a few F-bombs to fall out of their characters' mouths as fast as bullets from their guns.

Watch Goodfellas online and you'll probably not be too surprised that a Martin Scorsese film features a few f-bombs. But hundreds?

Heck, watch The Wolf of Wall Street online and you'll hear... well, you'll just have to click through our slideshow below to see the astounding number. Let's just say it's 3.16 F-bombs per minute!

Quentin Tarantino is another, check out these Pulp Fiction quotes and they're easy to spot.

But, what is fascinating about this list are two things:

One, just how many F-bombs are dropped in those filmmakers' work and...

Two, how Scorsese and Tarantino are actually not alone in that department. Some of our favorite filmmakers use quite a few.

Click through the following slideshow and witness 13 movies that use more than 200 F-bombs!

Who swears the most?

13 Movies With More than 200 F-Bombs
Jordan Belfort's story is pretty close to accurate as to how he and his people talked, but the number of 569 F-bombs in 180 minutes might surprise. For those who are counting, that's 3.16 F-bombs every minute!

Casino

2. Casino

Scorsese does it again! Casino has 422 uses of the word. We're guessing mostly by Joe Pesci!

End of Watch

3. End of Watch

When patroling the rough streets of Los Angeles, it's probably not surprising that when watching End of Watch, you'll hear the F-bomb 326 times. That's almost 3 per minute!

Goodfellas

4. Goodfellas

Between Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci (again!) and Ray Liotta and their gangster buddies, Scorsese has his cast uttering an F-bomb 300 times! But, given the length of the movie, it's actually a small(er) 2.05 per minute.

Reservoir Dogs

5. Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs brings us our first Quentin Tarantino movie. The Oscar-winning screenwriter has won awards for his F-bomb use. His first directorial film featured the word 269 times!

Pulp Fiction

6. Pulp Fiction

Two for Tarantino! His first "big" movie featured the F-bomb 265 times. But, given that the movie was 154 minutes long, that's a paltry 1.72 per minute!

The Big Lebowski

7. The Big Lebowski

The Coen brothers enter the F-bomb fray! Their classic The Big Lebowski found "The Dude" and his cohorts uttering it 260 times.

Do the Right Thing

8. Do the Right Thing

Spike Lee makes his F-bomb mark with his breakthrough film, Do the Right Thing. Look for the "F" word 240 times.

The Departed

9. The Departed

Scorsese finally won his first Best Director Oscar for The Departed and only had to resort to using the F-bomb 237 times. Those are some golden "bombs!"

Scarface

10. Scarface

Brian De Palma stakes his claim on this list with his Al Pacino-starring film that is probably better known for the "say hello to my little friend" line than for its 207 F-bomb drops.

Hot Tub Time Machine

11. Hot Tub Time Machine

Get into the Hot Tub Time Machine and you're going to hear the F-bomb 212 times!

Is a Jennifer Lawrence-Starring Mystique Spin-Off in the Works?

$

0

We love Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Mystique. She totally has us forgetting about that other actress who played her in the first few X-Men movies. Although she’s a huge, Oscar-winning star, Lawrence continues to enjoy the passion of performing in the ensemble that is the X-Men universe.

Jennifer Lawrence Mystique X-Men: Days of Future Past

She killed it as Mystique in X-Men: First Class, and judging by the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer, she has an even broader role in this next X-Men film from Bryan Singer. But, what if we were to suggest that Mystique strike out on her own?

Why should Wolverine have all the fun in the solo movie department?

As we picked up our newest issue of Entertainment Weekly, there she was on the cover in all her blue make-up glory -- and inside, an X-Men producer addressed this very issue.

"I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there's so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo," producer Lauren Shuler Donner said.

In fact, Donner admitted that Mystique is not the only character in the X-Men universe to potentially have his or her own film, or even franchise.

"There was a regime (at the studio) that didn't see the worth in (spin-offs), and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we're going to do right by it. I'd like to do Gambit. I'd like to do Deadpool. We'll see. There's a lot of really great characters."

All those X-Men solo mutant movies sound good to us!

In the meantime, check out Lawrence in action and watch X-Men: First Class online

Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones DVD Review: Spin-Off Terrifies

$

0

Filmmakers behind the successful horror franchise Paranormal Activity took a chance with making a spin-off. But, by centering Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones on Latino characters, they achieved two things successfully.

One, they rewarded a fan base that has been beyond passionate about the film series since the first scare-fest. And two, they have effectively broadened the world of Paranormal Activity in that it shows that the horror is being experienced not just by one family and those near that family!

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Blu-Ray

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, and for fans of the series, you’ll want to see it again before Paranormal Activity 5 hits theaters this October. And if you missed it during its January release, you must check it out on home video because it’s just that good and also, it is integral to the entire mythology of the series.

For 17-year-old Jesse, it has been hard not to hear the terror coming from his next door neighbor’s apartment. Seeking to document it, he grabs his camera and heads over there to find out what’s what! Guess what, Jesse? You’re now “marked.”

As teased in the Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones trailer, filmmakers have brilliantly used all sorts of supernatural elements from the Latino community that greatly enrich the world of Paranormal Activity. And as such, where they go from here is utterly terrifying and thrilling at the same time. And through the new stars of the series -- Jorge Diaz, Andrew Jacobs and Gabrielle Walsh -- one gets a deeper understanding of this horror.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Photo

The Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones home video release features the unrated version that amps up the scares exponentially. We recommend, if you haven’t seen it yet, witnessing the unrated version. Why scare yourself less? That’s what these movies are all about! The release also contains the theatrical version.

The bonus features really just contain one feature: Found Footage.

It may seem like a strange bonus feature to have found footage on a found footage film. But, what is so fascinating is that these scenes that are captured by the cameras of those involved in this horror story are not contained in either the theatrical or the unrated cuts of the film. In a way, it’s a fantastic means for going deeper into the terror, and for fans of Paranormal Activity, there is no greater gift than more found footage.

Can't wait to witness the horror? Watch Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones online!
