Eddie Murphy’s tenure as host of the Oscars was a short one. After Brett Ratner resigned as producer of the 2012 Academy Awards, his Tower Heist star has followed suit by dropping out today from his duties as host of this year’s highest honor for film.

Academy President Tom Sherak probably saw the writing on the wall yesterday when Ratner resigned as his statement didn’t seem filled with surprise.

“I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner and we all wish him well,” Sherak said.

Murphy released his own statement and summed up his feelings about leaving the Oscar gig before it truly got going.

“First and foremost, I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure the new production team and host will do an equally great job,” Murphy said in his statement.

What would a good Eddie Murphy movie be without producing a slew of memorable quotes? Tower Heist is no different. The film debuted November 4 and it came “this” close to winning the box office with critics hailing the return of Murphy at his best.

Tower Heist Stars Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller and Matthew Broderick
Tower Heist stars Murphy as Slide, Ben Stiller as Josh Kovacs, the general manager of a luxury apartment building in New York City, and Michael Pena as Rick Malloy -- the new bellhop -- while Casey Affleck goes against type in his performance as Charlie and Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is Odessa the maid.

Morgan Freeman has won an Oscar -- and a Golden Globe for that matter -- but he is being honored this year with the Golden Globe’s highest honor. Freeman has been selected to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 69th annual Golden Globes for his lifetime of work in the film world.

Morgan Freeman Pic
Freeman has been an Oscar nominee five times, and won for 2004’s Million Dollar Baby. He won the Golden Globe for Best Actor for 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy.

Although many remember Freeman on the PBS children’s show Electric Company in the 1970s, Freeman actually got his first film role in 1965 in the film The Pawnbroker. He even earned a Tony Award nomination for his work in 1978 for The Mighty Gents.

Freeman is currently filming The Dark Knight Rises (don't miss our set videos).

Past winners of the Cecil B. DeMille Award include last year’s Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine.

5 New Arthur Christmas Clips: The Elves Have It

Arthur Christmas is the perfect Christmas film for children of all ages -- equally funny whether you’re six or sixty. Aardman Animation and Sony Pictures Animation have released not one, but five new clips from Arthur Christmas in anticipation for the film’s November 23 release.

Arthur Christmas stars the vocal talents of Hugh Laurie, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Ashley Jensen (who we spoke to at an Arthur Christmas event) and Bill Nighy.

The film takes audiences into the well oiled machine that is the Santa Claus family and how they deliver billions of presents in one magical night.

McAvoy is Arthur, second in line to the title of Santa Claus. First in line to take it from Santa Senior (Broadbent) is Laurie’s Steve. Laurie’s character is driven and from the outside, appears to be not only the heir to the Santa sleigh, but also be the most qualified of Santa’s sons.

Audiences should be prepared to be dazzled when Arthur Christmas hits screens Thanksgiving weekend and gets us all in the holiday mood with the magic of animation. And don't miss the Arthur Christmas trailer.

Oscar Watch: Best Actor to Include Leonardo DiCaprio?

Leonardo DiCaprio teamed with Clint Eastwood for J. Edgar and produced one of the actor’s finest performances. Will it equal an Oscar nod? Movie Fanatic thinks so, but with this year’s crop of stellar acting performances, who will make the list of Best Actor nominees?

Leonardo DiCaprio is J. Edgar Hoover
In this week’s edition of Oscar Watch, we take a closer look at the Best Actor race and solicit our readers' opinions too as to who you believe should make the final five come nomination day.

The Best Actor Contenders:

Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar: It’s a stellar turn for DiCaprio in J. Edgar that the Academy especially enjoys -- he plays a historical figure over a lifetime, no easy task for any actor. Plus, Eastwood’s actors usually score a nod, and even win (see Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby.)

Ryan Gosling for The Ides of March: Although Movie Fanatic believes he deserves a nod for Drive, most voters will probably drift to vote for Ryan Gosling for his work on The Ides of March. It’s a character that is rich, very verbal (unlike his Driver character in Drive) and goes through the type of internal personal transformation that wins Oscars. Plus, the Academy could award him the nomination for Ides for his entire body of work this year that also included the superb Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Ryan Gosling in The Ides of March
George Clooney for The Descendants: Simply awesome. That is the only way to describe Clooney’s work in The Descendants. Will he be nominated? There is no question. The mystery is, will he win when he already has an Oscar and DiCaprio does not? Consider Clooney a lock.

Gary Oldman for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Another actor who deserves an Academy Award, but who has never won is Gary Oldman. With his turn in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, that could change. We also think that Oldman is a lock for a nomination, but that will probably be it for the versatile actor at this year’s Academy Awards.

Jean Dujardin for The Artist: Jean Dujardin gives a performance for the ages in a film that may be the best of the year. In The Artist, Dujardin is a silent film star whose story is tragic, heartbreaking and all transfixing. The actor’s character is the biggest star in the world of silent movies just as “talkies” begin to take over Hollywood. Most silent movie actors never worked again and Dujardin’s character is no different. In the hands of the French actor, George Valentin is one of the strongest characterizations of the year… all without saying a word as The Artist itself is a silent movie.

Brad Pitt for Moneyball: Brad Pitt’s turn as Billy Beane in Moneyball is one of the actor’s best performances of his career. But, will it earn him an Oscar nomination? We’re honestly not sure. Any other year and the world’s biggest movie star gets his nomination. But with Oldman, Clooney, Dujardin and DiCaprio as locks already, in our opinion, that fifth spot could go to Pitt… or it could go to Gosling.

What do you think? What performance did you most enjoy this year by a leading man? And come back next week when Movie Fanatic looks at the Best Actress race.

Brian Grazer Replaces Brett Ratner as Oscar Producer, Who Should be Host?

Tower Heist director Brett Ratner stepped down as Oscar producer, and another Tower Heist alum is stepping up to take his place. Brian Grazer, producer of the Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller-starring heist flick, has been announced to take over the producing duties for the Academy Awards. Movie Fanatic now wonders: Who should be host?

Brian Grazer Picture
Academy president Tom Sherak released a statement reflecting his joy in the Grazer appointment.

"Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work. He will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars," Sherak said.

Grazer added his two cents on the news in the same Academy statement. "It's very gratifying to be part of a show that honors excellence in the medium to which I have devoted so much of my career."

Now that the Oscars have its producer, we want to know who you think should host.

Movie Fanatic has a few thoughts. Not that he should, but look for Ben Stiller’s name to get floated around. Grazer, producer of his Tower Heist, could easily switch one Heist co-star for another in what would be a weird move of sorts. Sure, Stiller would be a stellar choice, but going from the Ratner-Eddie Murphy Tower Heist tandem to the Grazer-Stiller one wreaks of too much insider favoritism.

Ricky Gervais, who famously hosted the Golden Globes, has thrown his hat in the ring. He was talking to Access Hollywood and reported that the Academy hasn’t asked, but he would be willing to give them a discount. “I can knock off 20 percent,” he joked of his fee. Why would Gervais want the gig, besides the honor of course? “It’s tempting because for three hours, I’m the most feared man in LA, so that’s nice.”

We want to know, who do you think should host? Some internet buzz has started for the Muppets to take on the duties.

But, Movie Fanatic asks: What about Kevin Spacey? He’s an Oscar winner, has incredible stage presence, is a song-and-dance man and here’s a little known fact: He began his career as a stand-up comedian. Sounds like a winner to us!

Stephenie Meyer's Magic: Breaking Dawn Author Comes Clean with Movie Fanatic

Stephenie Meyer famously had a dream. She sat down, put Muse on the stereo and crafted The Twilight Saga. Now as Breaking Dawn Part 1, the first half of her final chapter in The Twilight Saga hits theaters November 18, she sits down with Movie Fanatic to talk about the end of an era and what lies ahead for the best-selling author.

Stephenie Meyer, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner
Meyer is not nostalgic about a chapter of her life beginning to come to a close. In fact, we found her excited about what’s next in her literary career. There is no question, Twilight has changed her life and she tells us everything from what it felt like to see her vision brought to life on the big screen to whether the series could continue.

Movie Fanatic: Has the Twilight phenomenon changed you as an author?

Stephenie Meyer: I don’t know that it has changed me as a storyteller but it has given me fodder for it. It’s all just experiences that I’ve never had before, new things and different circumstances. I think I’ve grown a lot just from new experiences. It’s hard to sum up something that doesn’t feel finished yet -- I keep wondering when it will feel like the bow is there. It was a great growing experience. It wasn’t always a comfortable experience. I did learn a lot of it the hard way but it was good for me in a lot of ways. When you are in your thirties you don’t think you’re going to learn because you’ve already jumped a lot of hurdles. I have a lot of new ones but I’ve grown.

Movie Fanatic: Do the films live up to what you envisioned?

Stephenie Meyer: For me it was emotional the first time I saw it. You worry, you’ve seen good stuff being filmed, and you know it's there but you never know. You go into it like, “Is it going to be awful?” And when a movie makes you forget that, and halfway through you are just enjoying it, that’s when you know that the movie is successful. I think Bill was very successful.

Movie Fanatic: What has this entire page-to-screen experience been like for you? Was it difficult to see it end?

Stephenie Meyer: It’s interesting to be done and not done. We had that final night of shooting but it keeps going. So with the second part of the movie coming out [next year] it doesn’t feel like an ending yet it feels like we’re still going. I’m not quite sure how it will be once we get to the end. I know there are a lot of people that I’m just going to miss seeing. Just seeing Kristen, Taylor and Rob today has been great so we’ll see how it feels when it is actually the end.

Movie Fanatic: Do you ever look at how screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has translated your ideas for the screenplay and think, “Oh, I wish I thought of that?”

Stephenie Meyer: Oh yeah, from the first film on [laughs]. There were several points where I was like, “Oh, that’s cool.” I remember in the very first one when there is just a little moment where Bella sees him in her bedroom and flicks the light on and he’s gone. And I was like, "How cool and simple was that?" With every movie there is always something really cool that she comes up with. There is stuff that is different but there is also stuff I wish I could have snagged.

Movie Fanatic: Does being a part of this process ever inspire you to write your own screenplay?

Stephenie Meyer: It’s something that I talked about on another project. I don’t think I’d want to give up that part of the creative process, which is really my favorite. I haven’t had a lot of time to just be alone with the story for a while. Once you put it into a screen format there are a lot of people involved with that so I’d still prefer to be alone with the story first.

Movie Fanatic: The Breaking Dawn wedding scene was the last scene shot. Were you on set and was it just a little emotional for you? You got to be in that scene!

Stephenie Meyer: I was somewhat prepared because I had been there for Kristen’s dress fitting. When she came out in the wedding dress there was just that moment where all of us got emotional, which I wasn’t expecting. The dress was stunning. But, the wedding scene was really emotional. Being at the wedding, it was cold actually and I did not want to be on camera. But Bill was like, “Oh come on, it’ll be great.” He talked me into it and at least I got to hang out with these two. It was fantastic to have the whole group there at the wedding. It was nice. When Kristen actually came down the aisle the first time, and there were many times she came down the aisle that day, she looked at me for a minute and there was this look of, it’s happening. It was like it was her wedding. It was very weird but it was awesome.

Movie Fanatic: How do you respond to critics who take exception to the portrayal of your female lead? Do you see it as a battle over gender politics?

Stephenie Meyer: The politics I never think of when I’m writing. It’s about a story that is interesting to me. I’m not going to say that Breaking Dawn doesn’t get weird, because it does. But these are things that I was exploring, what it means and meant to be a woman, particularly to be a mother because that is a big part of my life. For Bella, it is something that happened to her very young because she’d be a vampire and it’s not going to work out anymore. I’ve always been really fascinated with the idea that over a hundred years ago if you were going to have a baby you might die. You’d be taking your life in your hands to do that and there is a courage that we don’t have to develop. I’m fascinated with that type of woman. The woman who makes the choice that she is going to risk her life. It’s like being a solider. I like to explore things that I didn’t have to do in writing. I never became a vampire either. It really was never about the politics but how as a person you would deal with these things as an individual story, not as a story that this is an example for how I think life should be lived, or this is an example of a perfect or correct life. This is an example of a flawed life with choices and mistakes and how they affect people. So for me it’s never about anything different than that.

Movie Fanatic: What was your vision for the birth scene when you wrote it and what did you think once you saw it on screen?

Stephenie Meyer: I really liked the birth scene. It was something that in the beginning when we were developing the story, a lot of people weren’t sure and wondered if it was anticlimactic. But I thought the birth scene would be a lot and that we’d be surprised. When we were filming, a lot of times there is not a lot of excitement because you are filming the same thing over and over but there are those days. With the birth scene you could tell that it was so emotional, that this is gory and Edward is losing Bella. Rob’s performance was so heartbreaking that I will admit I teared up. A lot of people were feeling it because you look at the idea of losing the most important thing to you and he made you think about it in that way. I thought the way that was cut together was very emotional. I thought that Bill pulled such a human experience out of it; he has such a gift for that. So I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Movie Fanatic: Is there a favorite moment in the movie series for you?

Stephenie Meyer: Any time we get to spend time with other characters and you almost want more time. Some of the newbies that we’ve brought on only had a short time but were so fun. You have that one moment with Lee Pace when you are like, "Oh, he is so cool." You have your one little moment with the Romanians. And so you do just want to jump in and spend more time with everybody -- especially Michael Sheen.

Bella and Edward in Breaking Dawn
Movie Fanatic: Will there be more books in the Twilight universe, or are you finished with that chapter of your life?

Stephenie Meyer: I mean I’ve thought about it obviously, people ask me about it a lot. There was a time when I thought I would never stop writing about vampires. There are pieces of their stories written in my computer. But who knows? I’m not going to say no. Right now I don’t have much strive towards vampires, there is so much else going on. Sometimes you want to get to a new world. But the characters will always be alive for me, so who knows?

J. Edgar Movie Review: Clint Eastwood Paints His Picture

$
0
0

Clint Eastwood has made a movie in J. Edgar that is done with broad strokes that at times can feel slow, but still adds up to a decent piece of cinema. J. Edgar Hoover was the nation’s longest-running lawman while he headed up and, frankly, started the FBI. Eastwood cast Leonardo DiCaprio and charged the actor with encompassing decades of an icon’s life. DiCaprio meets the challenge and deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his efforts.

Leonardo DiCaprio Star as J. Edgar
J. Edgar is told from the standpoint of Hoover as he is dictating his memoir to a typist as an old man near the end of his FBI tenure. Eastwood flashes back to the time period he describes that forces the film to be non-linear and in many ways, that storytelling method makes the film feel disjointed. As each typist questions something Hoover says, he is quickly replaced. It is through these typists that the audience has their questions asked about Hoover’s methods. History has shown that they were often illegal and at the least underhanded.

Eastwood doesn’t portray the man as a hero, simply as an individual who took his position to protect the citizens of this country from evildoers seriously -- from communists, as is the initial threat when Hoover first takes office, to mobsters who much to the FBI head's dismay had become the darlings of Hollywood, to files he kept on Martin Luther King Jr. who he felt was one of the most dangerous men in America.

The problem with a biopic of this stature and breadth is that when a filmmaker has over 50 years of a person’s life to capture in a little over two hours, without a succinct theme to go back to, it can fall flat. Eastwood goes back and forth between the rumored love affair with a fellow FBI agent, Clyde Tolson (an incredible Armie Hammer), and FBI cases such as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, which only muddles J. Edgar's overall message.

What makes J. Edgar more than worth seeing is the acting. DiCaprio is astounding and despite the old man makeup that is oftentimes distracting, he impeccably captures an individual over five decades. Hammer gives a subtle, yet searing performance that also deserves Oscar consideration. Naomi Watts portrays Hoover’s long-serving secretary and also delivers in her ability to get inside a character over a lifetime. And the always amazing Judi Dench is Hoover’s mother whom Eastwood paints as the single most influential aspect of Hoover’s development, morals and how he lived his life.

Audiences expecting a history of the FBI with J. Edgar, which could easily have been the avenue Eastwood went down considering Hoover’s establishment of the agency and running it for decades, will be disappointed. Much of the action truly takes place inside of Hoover’s office. But, Eastwood’s work is a humanizing effort. Through Eastwood and DiCaprio (check out our interview with them), viewers get an understanding of not only who Hoover was, but how he became that way and also slight hints as to what and who filled his heart.

J. Edgar is one of those films that is difficult to review. The acting, directing and look of the film are all stellar. Yet, as a whole, the sum of the parts does not quite add up to the truly fulfilling biopic that we craved.

Billy Crystal Named Host of The Oscars

Movie Fanatic asked who should host the Oscars this morning, and before a discussion could even begin, it has been announced that Billy Crystal has taken the gig.

Billy Crystal Pic
Crystal is serving as Oscar host for the ninth time, entering Bob Hope territory in what can only be described as a “safe” choice. The actor will not ruffle feathers, as Eddie Murphy -- who dropped out -- may have. Crystal can do the song and dance numbers, effortlessly morph into characters for those Oscar video parodies of nominated films and more.

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions,” Crystal said on Twitter. “Looking forward to the show.”

So, now a chapter in the Brett Ratner Oscar soap opera has ended. We adore Crystal, but Movie Fanatic was hoping for something new, fresh and original. But, why mess with something that we know works? And when it comes to hosting the Oscars, we all know that Crystal will work.

The Immortals Movie Review: Swords, Sandals and Spectacle

$
0
0

Director Tarsem Singh is a visionary and that is on display in droves in his latest film, The Immortals, in spectacular 3D. Singh presents his unique take on Greek mythology and paints a visual landscape that recalls the Renaissance paintings that the director says inspires him.

The Immortals Still: Henry Cavill
The Immortals follows Theseus (Henry Cavill), a poor man with stellar warrior skills thanks to his training by a mysterious older man in his village. Mickey Rourke is King Hyperion, a vengeful ruler bent on not only ruling the lands of Earth, but bringing down the gods who live on Mt. Olympus.

One does not go to see movies like The Immortals for a chance to see the art of acting. Yet, Cavill is dazzling in his ability to bring a multitude of layers to his Theseus. Rourke, meanwhile, as his arch enemy, manages to portray his evil King with panache without being a caricature. In an action epic, all one can ask is that the battle against evil be one that allows the audience to cheer when the time is right for triumph. In The Immortals, the back and forth between Rourke and Cavill as cinematic foes more than produces a triumphant yelp as their clash is hours in the making.

The star of the film is truly Singh and his eye candy. The set design is a marvel while the battle scenes are choreographed with grace that works like a violent ballet. Stunning is too tame of a word to describe the canvas that the director paints on with The Immortals. And in 3D, a format that Movie Fanatic is extremely picky about, our response to this film’s additional dimension is that Singh’s vision must be witnessed -- if it is to be witnessed at all -- on the big screen.

Fans of the director, whose previous work on The Cell and The Fall are simply visual preludes to the palette of The Immortals, will be more than pleased with his work on the film. Given the scope and permission to create an epic in the vein of the classic studio epics of another Hollywood era, Singh culls his inspiration by painters and crafts a sensory overload in the best of ways.

Next up for Singh is his take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror -- which features Julia Roberts as the evil queen to Lily Collins' titular character -- and let’s just say this: Given what he has achieved with a faulty script and great actors, we can only imagine what the film futurist will do with a classic tale.

When it comes to The Immortals, see it as an Oscar contender in the classic award-winning vein: Visual effects and audio effects and nowhere near any of the other categories. But that is why movies such as The Immortals are big screen experiences. We marvel at what man can do with art and inspiration. The closing shot in the film captures this perfectly. As the camera pulls back from the heavens, you would swear that what is seen belongs in a museum in Europe with a painted by date firmly in the Renaissance.

Jack and Jill Movie Review: Make Time for Twin Time

Adam Sandler movies hold a special place in many an audience member’s heart. Jack and Jill should land right in the wheelhouse of expectations for fans of his work.

Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill
The comedy about fraternal twins, both played by Sandler, is something else in its ability to both feature a slew of fart jokes and an Academy Award winner in the one and only Al Pacino playing himself. This is no cameo. Pacino plays an integral part of the story and gets screen time worthy of a co-starring moniker. He even has the best line in the entire film and it has to do with the “destruction” of his Oscar.

At its core, Jack and Jill is an homage to twins. The opening and closing credits introduce a series of real-life twins that serve as bookends to introduce the special bond of twin-hood and provide some additional comic relief.

In Jack and Jill, the sister is visiting the brother for Thanksgiving. It is a trip that winds up including New Year’s. That six-week period gives Sandler a golden opportunity to milk the dressing-in-drag comedy stalwart and also provide his audience with his normal laugh-worthy cinematic mayhem.

The comic fraternity of Adam Sandler shows up in droves in Jack and Jill. Look for character cameos from David Spade, Norm MacDonald and even our favorite Disney pirate joins in the fun.

Katie Holmes stars as Jack’s wife. The actress is, unfortunately, merely window dressing for Jack and Jill. But, she would never have signed on if there were not a few moments worthy of her presence. And there are, as Holmes never plays Sandler’s wife as a cut-out.

Sandler as Jill eventually begins to wear itself thin to the audience. The storyline with Pacino also comes close to cringe-worthy, yet this is a Sandler movie and as such, the bumps in the road are still a worthy part of the journey.

Jack and Jill is a typical Adam Sandler movie. But it works on numerous levels for the bombastic brilliance with which it aspires. Expect a Happy Madison produced film and all that entails and you will exit the theater with a solid grin.

His character believes his grandfather (Michael Caine) is lost there. Along for the ride is his mom’s boyfriend (Johnson) and his girlfriend (Hudgens).
