What If Review: What If Harry Potter Made a Rom-Com?

$
0
0

What If continues the rom-com theory exploring the nature of the relationship between men and women and the “f” word… yes, friendship. Daniel Radcliffe stars as Wallace, a man coming off a terrible break-up who thinks that the word love should be equated with pain.

Zoe Kazan Daniel Radcliffe Stars What If

Zoe Kazan is Chantry, a woman who is happy in her long-term relationship with her live-in love, Ben (Rafe Spall).

Chantry and Wallace meet at a party given by his best friend and her cousin, Allan (Adam Driver, soon to be seen in Star Wars: Episode VII). They have great conversation and decide to hang out more as friends. You know, because of that boyfriend thing.

The chemistry between Kazan and Radcliffe is quite electric, even seen in the What If trailer. And they are largely why this formulaic film works. There really is not too much new ground that What If forges with its questions about whether men and women can be friends. But, the thing here is… the wrong question is being asked.

The better thing to wonder here is if men and women can be friends when the woman makes it clear that’s all she wants and the man knows that, and still proceeds to fall for her.

Michael Dowse directs this for the most part charming film from a screenplay by Elan Mastai. And it’s immediately clear that What If is based on a play, written by T.J. Dawe and Michael Rinaldi.

What If Daniel Radcliffe

It just has that intimate feel that stage productions have and that is, honestly, one of the best things about this rom-com. Another stage play aspect is that all the characters, especially the periphery ones, are so fully developed. These are not cardboard cut-outs and that is what elevates what could be an average rom-com into the above average level.

And then there’s Radcliffe and Kazan. We truly pull for these two to get together because they are just so bloody cute. Their banter is beautiful. The chemistry is electric and yet, complicated.

We are also just so impressed with Radcliffe. He is making some fantastic choices, post-Harry Potter. Whether dark and gloomy (The Woman in Black and what you see in this Horns trailer), cerebral (Kill Your Darlings) or light as a feather (What If), the former Boy Who Lived is truly setting himself on a path for an acting career that will surely mirror some of the great classic British actors that clearly inspire him before he is done.

Our What If review finds that although the film does not really chart new ground, it still is quite charming.

And to see where we first met this talent of an actor, watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone online.

Camp X-Ray Trailer: Kristen Stewart Questions Her Role in War

The Camp X-Ray trailer is here and it is simply stunning and wholeheartedly surprising. Kristen Stewart stars as a woman who enlists in the military with the hope of making a difference. What ends up happening to her will force her to question everything she believes in.

Stewart (most recently seen in Snow White and the Huntsman and On the Road) is assigned to the military prison that we know as Guantanamo Bay.

When she gets there, she realizes quickly that things are not “black and white.”

The predicament of Guantanamo Bay is front and center in this drama from director Peter Sattler (who also wrote the screenplay).

Stewart and her scenes with a “detainee” played by Payman Maadi look absolutely powerful -- which has us suddenly putting Camp X-Ray on our calendar for its October 17 release date.

Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice: Warner Prez Addresses Date Change

We all know by now that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice moved its release date to May 2016. Some think that it was to avoid going head-to-head with Marvel Studios’ Captain America 3. Others believe it was just a chance for the film to be seen soon after it was done, instead of waiting a few more months for a coveted summer spot.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Logo

Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman spoke with EW and admitted that it was, in fact, a bit of both. It seems that everyone at DC Comics and Warner Bros. believed that there was no way that Marvel would keep that date.

"In terms of going back and reviewing the situation, it looked to us -- and maybe our reconnaissance wasn't great -- that they were not going to have a movie [ready] on that date,” Fellman said. “Just that they held onto it and they might not be able to deliver. But they took another position."

But given that Captain America 3 will definitely open on that date, Fellman and everyone at Warner Bros. felt that moving Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice would not be a loss. In fact, in today’s day and age… there is no such thing as a must-see movie time period.

"The reality now is there really isn't a bad week to open a movie. If you look at the summer box office this year, you can see that there were so many movies, one after the other. You can start with Spider-Man, two weeks later Godzilla, and then Maleficent, and then Edge of Tomorrow, and then Jump Street and Transformers. And the one thing they all had in common, not one of them did over $250 million,” Fellman said.

“We'll be the first one up [in 2016], which is very important, and we'll have six weeks before Captain America comes in."

Weekend Movie Preview: August 8, 2014

It's a busy weekend movie preview this time out, with five films opening in cinemas this second weekend of August.

Helen Mirren truly cooks in The Hundred-Foot Journey, those ninja turtles are back in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, weather is the bad guy in Into the Storm, Daniel Radcliffe tries his hand at a rom-com with What If and it's an all-star Step Up reunion in Step Up: All In.

Let's break it down...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The boys are back and we're not sure if that is a good thing. As our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles review reported, the effects are better than the '90s movies, but that doesn't mean the story is too.

Leonardo Character Poster
Leonardo is living large in his own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poster!

Michael Bay produced this thing, and his handprints are all over it, and that is not a good thing. Little boys will love it, but beyond that, we're not sure who this movie is for.

Into the Storm: Talk about a special effects driven movie that doesn't forget to give us characters that we care about! Climate change has caused historically severe storms across the planet and that is the basis for this disaster flick that shows what happens when a series of tornadoes touches down in one Midwestern town for one hell of a day.

Into the Storm Star Richard Armitage
Richard Armitage is trying to help out, but what can you do when your town is hit by tornado after tornado?!

Check out our Into the Storm review for more.

Step Up All In: Now, we may be biased 'cause we adore the Step Up movies, but there is something about seeing stars from several of the past incarnations in one movie that truly had us dancing in the aisles.

Step Up: All In Poster
The poster for the highly anticipated Step Up: All In, which lands in theaters July 25.

As we stated in our Step Up: All In review, the dance numbers go to a whole new level and the 3D camera technology that exists now truly puts the viewer right in the middle of these mind-blowing routines!

The Hundred-Foot Journey: Mirren is a global treasure and she proves that again with her turn as the owner of a French restaurant who does everything she can to ensure her new neighbors fail at their Indian restaurant.

Helen Mirren's Happy?
Kind of weird to see Helen Mirren smile in a movie, no?

The global cast is sensational and although our The Hundred-Foot Journey review found the film a little on the light side, overall it is as delicious as those dishes served in the movie.

What If: Radcliffe tries his hand at romantic leading man and succeeds! Although the "can women and men be friends" aspect of the story feels recycled, the chemistry between Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan is electric.

Daniel Radcliffe Walks Zoe Kazan in the Rain
What's more romantic than this? For Daniel Radcliffe, unfortunately, that's his "friend" and not a romantic interest.

And in a season filled with blockbuster films with explosions and superheroes, this rom-com is a nice change. As our What If review points out, for a film with such a seen it before premise, it sure feels fresh.

Galaxy Quest Actors Reminisce: Thoughts on Sequel?

$

Galaxy Quest arrived in 1999 and caught everyone by surprise with its pitch perfect lampoon of sci-fi movies, specifically Star Trek. And don't get us started on those awesome Galaxy Quest quotes!

Galaxy Quest Cast

Tim Allen was very William Shatner-esque and he was the tip of the cast iceberg of talent. Joining him was Sam Rockwell, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman (post-Die Hard, pre-Harry Potter) and Tony Shalhoub.

The cast recently was asked by MTV.com about the film and some surprising things came out of the conversation. For one, producer Mark Johnson recalls that the original script needed a whole lot of work to get it to the movie we adore now.

“Very few people have ever read that,” Johnson said of the original screenplay. “The original concept was brilliant, but we needed someone like a Bob Gordon (the film's credited screenwriter) to take it from there.”

Rockwell originally decided not to do the film that would become such a cult favorite, but a certain Oscar winner talked him into it.

“I originally turned it down. I loved the script, but I was committed to do a small movie as a lead opposite Marisa Tomei,” Rockwell recalled. “But Kevin Spacey convinced me to do it. I went and saw him in The Iceman Cometh and he knew I was struggling with this decision and he said, ‘I think you know what to do.’”

And the rest was history.

Since the film debuted 15 years ago, anyone involved has been pestered with questions about a possible Galaxy Quest sequel. Allen has an idea for one that would work.

“How’s this for a sequel? It’s 15 years later. The Thermians come back, but they haven’t aged. Maybe they don’t have warp anymore so it took 15 years,” Allen said. “They have to search for a new homeland. Sarris [the main villain] is gone but his family never forgets and you take it from there.”

Johnson doesn’t want to burst the cast’s and especially Allen’s bubble, but admits that a sequel is probably not gonna happen.

“If we announced a sequel or a TV show, there’d be genuine excitement, not ‘It’s too late.’ We’ve tried. I’d do it, Dean would do it. But we need Bob. It’s a Bob Gordon joint, but Bob is a very specific guy.”

Woodstock Blu-Ray Review: Never-Before-Seen Moments of Peace, Love & Music

For those of us who think that one of the best music documentaries ever is Woodstock, the release of the new Blu-Ray 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Revisited of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music is some seriously rocking news. And this release arriving hot on the heels of the Ron Howard-Jay-Z collaboration music doc Made in America shows this is a very good time for music docs!

Woodstock Blu-Ray

It features never-before-seen concert footage from Santana, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez and more. Also a treat: The inclusion of some gorgeous reproduction Woodstock Festival concert tickets and even a re-issue of the iconic Woodstock logo iron-on patch that was all the rage back in the day.

The two hours of concert footage that has never before been released is accompanied by interviews with Martin Scorsese, Michael Lang, director Michael Wadleigh, Hugh Hefner, Eddie Kramer (the concert’s original chief on-site engineer and producer-engineer for Jimi Hendrix) and others who chronicle the making of the festival and the film.

We appreciated the bonus features 3 Days in a Truck, No Rain! No Rain! and Living Up To Idealism. They all add up to make a must-own music doc even more of a must-have for any music or film fan for that matter.

The never-before-seen concert footage includes tracks such as Book of Love, Everything’s Gonna Be Alright, Marrakesh Express, Mr. Tambourine Man, I Shall Be Released and… Pinball Wizard!

The 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Revisited of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music also includes concert footage that was only available on rare occasions featuring the Grateful Dead’s Mama Tried and Jefferson Airplane’s Volunteers.

We also cherished the Woodstock: From Festival to Feature that showcases interviews, sights and sounds of the event and all from the point of view of the real people who attended, those who put on the event and those who lit up the stage. It is simply… stunning.

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music chronicled the nearly half a million people who converged on Max Yasgur’s farm in rural New York to experience a cultural moment so huge it would never be replicated. It is not only a defining moment of a generation, it is also as important as a culture moment in the history of our society.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary and included a film crew that even featured a future legend in Scorsese. Now that this special edition of the Blu-Ray is out, we could not recommend it enough. In fact, watch Woodstock online right now!

Transformers 5: Michael Bay Will Not Direct

With Transformers: Age of Extinction currently the top grossing movie of 2014, focus has turned to the fifth Transformers movie. One thing is for sure, it will likely be the first that is not directed by series founder Michael Bay.

Transformers Age of Extinction Michael Bay Mark Wahlberg

Given all the money he’s made on these (and his other) films, Bay could do whatever he wants as his next project, and according to an interview he did in USA Today, there is something he is zeroing in on.

“There’s kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make,” he said. That passion project will be a documentary about elephant poaching. “I have a lot of stories to tell. And it’s about flexing new muscles.”

After wrapping Transformers: Age of Extinction, given what he went through to bring it to life, one could see he’s ready to pass the baton to another director while he focuses on other things.

“They are so (expletive) hard to make. They’re hard. 4,000 people worked on [Age of Extinction], and it’s every day for two years, seven days a week,” Bay said.

“How long can you do Transformers, you know what I’m saying? And after you see this movie, you think, ‘Well what the hell am I going to do next?’”

The Expendables 3: Mel Gibson & Sylvester Stallone Talk Going At It!

One of the best things about The Expendables 3 is watching '80s action heroes Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson go mano a mano. As teased in The Expendables 3 trailer, Gibson is our villain, a founding member of the Expendables, who we learn has gone astray and is now one of the world’s worst terrorists/arms dealers.

Sylvester Stallone Stars The Expendables 3

For the two stars, it was clear they enjoyed themselves when Movie Fanatic caught up with the pair. “It’s a good fight. You know, there are situations in sports where two rivalries get together, two teams that have done very well in their own world. Then you wonder how they would do against each other,” Stallone said. “When that finally happens, it becomes an event.”

Gibson compared it to two movie monsters. “It’s King Kong vs Godzilla,” he admitted.

“Exactly, the creature that ate the monster -- that's us,” Stallone added and chuckled.

Stallone sounds like he would do it again in a heartbeat. “I was looking forward to it. And Mel, he's a great athlete -- very fast, very strong -- and it was great being punched by him,” Stallone said. “Thank you very much. I appreciate that.”

Gibson is quick to point out that there was no actual contact, so Sly is embellishing and perhaps just trying to make him look good. “It's kind of like movie sex, you don't actually do it,” Gibson said.

“He's a bald-faced liar,” Stallone interrupted.

Although the star wattage on this The Expendables movie is through the roof with the addition of Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Wesley Snipes, there is definitely someone missing -- Bruce Willis.

“What happened with Bruce Willis? Well, things didn't work out and then Harrison Ford came along,” Stallone admitted.

“That happens in film and casting. It's just the way it is. It's nothing personal. It sounded like it got personal and I'm sorry it did sound that way, but it was just actors talking and things move on. I think Bruce Willis is a great guy and he does fantastic entertaining films, and when he nails it, he nails it big time.”

The Expendables 3 Star Mel Gibson

Someone who was rumored to be involved, but as you can tell from The Expendables 3 movie trailer, is not in the movie was Jackie Chan. Stallone promises that future Expendables movies will definitely include the Asian action hero.

“Jackie was on, but literally it became a scheduling problem. Jackie is just so busy in his regular life. He has so many businesses and he's so loved over there in China, he literally couldn't cut out for those three days of shooting,” Stallone said.

“We'll get him next time, don't worry. He's a good friend.”

When Gibson got the script, it probably didn’t matter what part of it spoke to him. The thrill of being part of a huge ensemble was enough. But, there was plenty for the Oscar winner to sink his teeth into.

"It was very involved. There were a lot of characters and I didn't know how they were going to jam it all in, but somehow they managed to do it and everybody got a fair shake,” Gibson said. “So hats off to Sly for enabling that to happen.”

Gibson’s trademark sense of humor then makes its presence known. “When I read it, I didn't read it thinking I was the bad guy, you know? In fact, I didn't know I was the bad guy,” he said and laughed. “I thought Dolph Lundgren was the bad guy. So, it's a surprise to me and I'm kind of shocked and a little offended. Oh, and I wanted to be the love interest, but there was no one to love!”

The Expendables Premiere Sylvester Stallone Mel Gibson

One of the greatest scenes in the movie is a verbal talk between Gibson and Stallone in a van taking Gibson’s villain to justice. Gibson shows in those moments why he is one of the most talented actors working today. Stallone reported that although that scene was scripted, it was Gibson who re-wrote it and delivered what you see on screens when The Expendables 3 hits theaters August 15.

“Well, I kind of worked on the script a little bit and I came in and hammered it out. I handed out the pages to Sly and they looked at it and went, ‘Yeah, it's cool,’” Gibson said. “It was just a theme of somebody who was subcontracted by his government and then thrown under the bus.”

“It had a reality to it. What gave it some heart was that he was actually saying something that had some truth. It was valid and he was committed to it. I don't believe he saw himself as the bad guy, what the key to the whole thing was. Then you bring in the aspect of Cane and Abel -- two of the best of friends also can become the worst enemies,” Stallone added.

“He just killed it. I had some dialogue back and forth with him and the more he did the scene, the more I realized I shouldn't speak. I just let him roll. He was convincing himself. He was convincing me. He was convincing the audience.”

When Stallone was asked how long he could keep making The Expendables movies, he nailed it with his reply. “After the fifth Expendables, you start wearing the 'pendables,’” he said and laughed. “You just gotta keep going!”

Zoolander 2: Justin Theroux Says “We’ve Got A Script”

Ben Stiller is dying to do a sequel to the film that delivered those unforgettable Zoolander quotes. It’s been years in the making, but fans, take heart: If it took all those years to finally get a sequel to Anchorman, perhaps Zoolander 2 will still be happening.

Ben Stiller is Zoolander

In fact, in a recent interview with Vulture to talk about his HBO show The Leftovers, the man who was hired to pen a script with Stiller, Justin Theroux, reported that they may be closer than we thought.

“Yeah, we’ve got a script for the sequel, and we’ve just been in talks again. We’re trying to sharpen it and hone it. I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running,” Theroux said.

“It’s actually been a little hard with the show (The Leftovers), but now I’m back full-time to dedicate time toward doing it. I met with Ben a couple times when I was in New York doing The Leftovers, and then I’m meeting again with him probably in September.”

Theroux had been attached to direct Zoolander 2 (Stiller helmed the first one), but admitted that it may be all he can do to help deliver the script. “I don’t think I’m going to direct it anymore,” he admitted.

“It really depends on whether the show gets picked up. If it gets picked up, then I don’t think I’ll have the time to do it. So it’ll probably get handed to Ben, which would be awesome.”

The Giver: Katie Holmes On Being Different Kind of Mother

$

In case you have not noticed, Katie Holmes does not take on too many film roles. A movie has to truly say something to her and mean something for her to take the time away from raising her daughter with Tom Cruise, Suri. So, as a fan of the book The Giver, the opportunity to be a part of it was a no-brainer.

The Giver Katie Holmes Brenton Thwaites

“I think what I love so much about this film and this book is you really get to see this extreme world where you have no pain, you have no emotion -- everything is routine and very safe and controlled,” Holmes told Movie Fanatic.

As teased in The Giver trailer, Holmes plays the mother of Brenton Thwaites’ character, Jonah. He is selected by his dystopian society to be the receiver of memories from the title character, played by Jeff Bridges. When his world opens up and he witnesses (and feels!) everything that the human condition is capable of, he doesn’t take it very well and it threatens this entire world run by Meryl Streep’s Chief Elder.

“And then you get to see this character have these adventures and these human moments and first love but also war. And when you watch the film, you can really for yourself see both sides,” Holmes admitted.

Holmes appreciated the test of having to straddle two worlds, through a member of the ruling class of this society, but also as a mother to a soul who is by nature challenging it. “It was a great challenge to play this character because she’s kind of part of both worlds. She’s the mother of this person who is going through this adventurous time.”

The Giver stars not only Streep, but Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, and is directed by the supremely talented Phillip Noyce, based on the Newbery Award-winning book by Lois Lowry. “The book is so beloved and to be a part of this project with Jeff and Meryl Streep and all of these amazing actors was pure delight. And to work with Phillip was wonderful,” Holmes said.

“I think that one of the draws of doing this project was this book. And the reason why I think it’s so beloved by so many and why schools have it on their reading list is because of these powerful themes-- having children really decide for themselves what they think is important and that free choice. So I’m very happy to be a part of the film adaptation of this."

And given that this world is emotionless (everyone takes a daily injection that suppresses emotions, and even colors!), Holmes saw it as an interesting thing for any actor to go through. “It was interesting to play this character because this world, there is no emotion, there is no pain. And so for an actor, you’re always trying to emote but you can’t, so it was interesting,” Holmes said.

“And playing Brenton’s mom and having him have these experiences that were so foreign to my character, and also being the guardian of the rules of this world was really interesting and quite a challenge. But mostly it was just an honor to be a part of something that I think is a very valuable piece of work.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Is A Go: Release Date Announced!

Well, that did not take long! Fresh off Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles winning the box office, Paramount has announced plans for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. We guess that making $65 million in your first weekend and scoring the fourth highest August debut of all time gives you that right!

Still Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Look for the second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie on June 3, 2016 with writers Josh Applebaum and Andrew Nemec back on board, as well as producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. There is no word whether the first film’s director -- Jonathan Liebesman -- will return, although we doubt that he will be replaced.

With decades of comics to choose from, there are any number of avenues to go down with a sequel and we’re sure that all those involved in the rebooting of the franchise already know where they want their four martial arts, mutated turtle teenagers to go in the future.

Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group, said that bringing the turtles back was a challenge, but now that they have succeeded, look for more.

“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” Goodman said.

“The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

Stay tuned for more! And until then, click through and enjoy our favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles quotes in the slideshow below.

Robin Williams Dead at 63: Appears a Suicide

Robin Williams, the beloved Oscar-winning actor and comedian, has died at the age of 63. Williams’ publicist would not comment on his cause of death (authorities think so far that it was a suicide) but did release a statement about his passing.

“Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time,” the statement read.

According to a press statement released by the Marin County Coroner’s office, they said that the cause of death was “suicide due to asphyxia.”

Williams won his Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the Matt Damon-Ben Affleck penned Good Will Hunting and was currently making a successful return to television with his work opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in The Crazy Ones.

Williams made dozens of films and was probably best known for his roles in Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet's SocietyMrs. Doubtfire, Flubber, Jack, The Birdcage, Jumanji, Patch Adams and of course the voice of the genie in Aladdin.

Robin Williams has died at 63 earlier today, and although this news is terribly sad, the truth is that Williams' talent will live on with his incredible breadth of work on the silver screen.

Williams could do it all.

From animated films that became iconic roles for Williams (Aladdin) to his Oscar-winning turn that can be seen when you watch Good Will Hunting online, there is little doubt that Williams was a national treasure.

Although he was most known for his comedy work, like his first film that truly announced him to the world (Popeye), it was his next film that showed he could also do drama with the best of them (The World According to Garp).

Williams will be sorely missed and his loss has left a huge hole in the talent pool here in Hollywood.

Would you believe that both Robert Downey Jr. and Brad Pitt auditioned for Ron Howard's Backdraft? Yup, and it's on the video below!

Also, Carrie Fisher's Star Wars audition is here! And watch the man who would make it big in the movie you can see when you watch Titanic online in his early audition! Oh, Leo, we even loved you back then!

Watch The Matrix online and we've got its star in a way-early audition that he totally nails! And before he would utter these Superbad quotes and become uber-famous, Michael Cera had to try out!

The above video is such a reminder that these superstars had to start somewhere and that somewhere was as unglamorous as can be!

Celebrities Tribute Robin Williams: “So Sad to Think About This”

The world was stunned yesterday when we learned that Robin Williams was dead at 63. He had taken his own life and left this world. But, his memory will live on with the decades of work that he excelled at, whether making us laugh, cry or both.

Patch Adams Robin Williams

Those who worked with him, and some of those who barely knew him beyond the public persona, paid tribute. And here are just a few of the thoughts shared by everyone from Meryl Streep to Ben Stiller and President Obama.

And it seems profound in hindsight, but Movie Fanatic even talked to Joel McHale about working with Williams just a few weeks ago. His honor at sharing space with the man was beyond touching.

Here is a sampling of what Hollywood had to say about this sad passing of a legend.

Meryl Streep
"It's hard to imagine unstoppable energy stopped. He was such a generous soul."

Ben Stiller (Night at the Museum co-star)
"His kindness and generosity is what I think of. How kind he was to anyone who wanted to connect with him. And he could not help but be funny all the time. He would do something as long as it would keep you laughing. He made many, many film crews laugh out loud before the audiences ever saw it. He made such a big impact on the world. So there is the man, and his talent, and I think in his case both were extraordinary."

Sally Field (Mrs. Doubtfire co-star)
“He always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long - tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another.”

Chevy Chase
"Robin and I were great friends, suffering from the same little-known disease: depression. I never could have expected this ending to his life, and to ours with him. God bless him and God bless us all for his life! I cannot believe this. I am overwhelmed with grief. What a wonderful man/boy and what a tremendous talent in the most important art of any time – comedy! I loved him."

Danny DeVito
"So sad to think about this. Hard to speak. Hard to say. Hard to take. All I can think about is what a joy he was to be with. I'm devastated. I'm sending my love to his family and everyone who loved him. My heart is broken by this news."

President Barack Obama
"Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams."

John Travolta
"I've never known a sweeter, brighter, more considerate person than Robin. Robin's commitment as an artist to lifting our mood and making us happy is compared to none. He loved us all and we loved him back."

Chris Columbus (director, Mrs. Doubtfire, Nine Months, Bicentennial Man)
"We have lost one of our most inspired and gifted comic minds, as well as one of this generation's greatest actors. To watch Robin work was a magical and special privilege. His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place. He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of 'genius.' We were friends for 21 years. Our children grew up together, he inspired us to spend our lives in San Francisco and I loved him like a brother. The world was a better place with Robin in it. And his beautiful legacy will live on forever."

Steve Martin
"I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

Mindy Kaling
"I am named after a character from a Robin Williams TV show when my parents still lived in Africa. He meant so much, to so many, so far away."

Glenn Close (The World According to Garp co-star)
"I am absolutely heartbroken. Robin was a national treasure and a beautiful soul."

Popeye
Robin Williams was Popeye, and can you imagine anyone else playing the comic hero? Hardly!

Mortdecai Trailer: Johnny Depp Is a Hilarious Big Spender

Johnny Depp stars in Mortdecai, the wild-looking comedy that features an all-star cast and, honestly, a role that appears to be right up Depp’s alley.

It’s refreshing to see him return to comedy and he seems to be relishing the title character role as a global hot-spot hopper who, as the song that plays in the first Mortdecai trailer says, is a “Big Spender.”

Mortdecai is having a fun time traveling the world, even while avoiding the British MI5, Russians who want him dead, an international terrorist and even his hard-driving wife.

Depp’s Mortdecai is a high end art dealer who seems to be getting out of jams left and right with his sense of humor, charm and dashing good looks. Oh, and he’s got a bank account filled with Nazi gold!

Mortdecai features a superstar cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Bettany.

Look for it February 6, 2015, and in the meantime, check out one of Depp’s great cameos (where he’s equally as funny) and watch 21 Jump Street online

Edward Scissorhands
Perhaps Johnny's best movie, Edward Scissorhands featured him playing a character that was equally vulnerable and vivacious. It was also another gem he scored with his good friend, director Tim Burton.
