Prometheus 2: Ridley Scott Is “Getting Away From Gods & Dragons”

When it was announced by Ridley Scott that he would be making a Prometheus 2, those of us that appreciated the first one were quite thrilled. It would be like he was getting all that introductory crap out of the way and could get to the heart of the adventure that we all know will lead into the world seen when you watch Alien online.

Ridley Scott Prometheus

While promoting his latest flick, Exodus: Gods and Kings (due December 12), Scott was talking to The Australian and gave a downright specific preview for what fans can expect when he shoots Prometheus 2.

“[It is a] fresh take. [It will be] getting away from gods and dragons and shit. If I see one more dragon I’m going to shoot myself. Stop the dragons,” Scott said.

Scott sees the original dragon, aka alien, as one who cannot be messed with, onscreen or off. “The definitive dragon and he’s a (expletive),” Scott said.

“The alien’s real which is why it’s probably one of the scariest monsters in film history. So with Prometheus 2, what I’m trying to do is reintroduce a fresher form of alien in the third act.”

That baby alien in the first Prometheus? Yeah, that will be “awfully close to the alien” that made life hell for Ripley.

Stay tuned for more and until then, watch Prometheus online

23 Jump Street: Phil Lord & Chris Miller Believe It Will Be “Crazier”

With the success of 21 Jump Street, it was hardly a surprise that we got 22 Jump Street. And now that that film has landed on DVD and Blu-Ray (check out our 22 Jump Street DVD review), directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are talking about 23 Jump Street.

23 Jump Street Logo

In the continuation of an interview with Empire Magazine where they updated on the LEGO Batman movie and The LEGO Movie 2, they were asked the status of 23 Jump Street, which Sony has green lit -- but whose status is kind of up in the air.

“It’s quite possible,” Miller said.

“We’ve been developing something with Rodney Rothman, who was one of the writers on 22 Jump Street, who’s written a script, and it’s yet crazier -- completely different. Who knows if it’ll all come together or how."

As we stated previously, we felt that the duo gutted any chance of the series continuing after they put sequels in the closing credits of 22 Jump Street that went up to like 40 Jump Street! It was a fantastic joke, but almost seemed to take the power of making sequels away as they’ve already lampooned it.

Yet, maybe they were serious. So… will Jenko and Schmidt (Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill) head to medical school?

Time will tell, but if we were to bet… we’d bet the farm that 23 Jump Street will happen.

Update on the Investigation
Tatum & Hill update Ice Cube, and from the looks of their board, it's not going so well.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer Will Premiere Before What Movie?

$

Earlier this week, we hypothesized about when the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer will premiere. Now, we have a pretty good idea exactly when audiences will get their first look at J.J. Abrams’ vision for Episode 7.

Star Wars The Force Awakens

Hope you’re planning on seeing The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, because word is that’s where the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer will make its first appearance.

Star Wars VII News picked up a tip from a theater manager that basically he’s been told that among the trailers expected to arrive with Peter Jackson’s final The Hobbit film will be a tease of J.J. Abrams’ first Star Wars movie.

Think it’s a coincidence that The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies premieres on December 17 and almost exactly a year later, December 18, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens premieres? There are no accidents in Hollywood.

What’s fascinating about this news is that those of us who write about the world of movies were convinced that the first time we got any kind of teaser from the latest Star Wars movie, that it would be tied to a similar property with the studio that is putting it out. Of course, the only Disney movie left to come out on the big screen is the musical Into the Woods. And we all know that doesn’t quite fit.

So, it was thought it would premiere on the Disney owned ABC, perhaps during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But, this news -- in hindsight -- makes perfect sense on two fronts.

First, movie trailers premiere before other studios' movies all the time -- nothing new there.

Secondly, Disney and Lucasfilm would want to premiere their trailer theatrically in front of the most eyes possible, and if you look at the schedule of movies between now and the end of the year, that would be The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Makes sense, doesn’t it!

Check out the things we expect from the upcoming seventh Star Wars film in the slideshow below.

Han Solo Must Have a Huge Part
We've heard that Harrison Ford's Han Solo has an enormous part in the seventh Star Wars movie. Ford would not have signed on to J.J. Abrams' film if that was not the case.

Mockingjay Part 1 Review: Katniss as Phoenix Rising

$

Director Francis Lawrence had a real challenge bringing Suzanne Collins’ Mockingjay to the big screen. Sure, he had the luxury of knowing he would have two parts cinematically -- Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay Part 2.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Star Jennifer Lawrence

But the first half of the book is so cerebral and political while its heroine -- Katniss -- spends much of that part of the final novel suffering from PTSD. How on Earth could that first half of Collins’ book make for a good movie?

Well, let us congratulate the helmer because he has crafted a wildly entertaining, thrilling and emotionally riveting first half conclusion to The Hunger Games saga.

The action begins with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) having a truly terrifying time recovering from her experiences from the two Hunger Games. We learn that she is in District 13 and there exists the rebellion that seeks to overthrow President Snow (Donald Sutherland, as slippery and sinister as ever) and his Capitol government that is ruling Panem with an iron fist.

Katniss cannot sleep. She is having nightmares. She can’t adjust to her non-Hunger Games life. But, thankfully, her mother and sister are there, rescued from District 12 when it was decimated (as seen in this Mockingjay Part 1 clip) as payback for what Katniss did at the end of the movie you can see when you watch Catching Fire online.

Our heroine is brought to President Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Katniss is consoled for what she has gone through, but is pressed that this resistance needs a face, a lightning rod, and whether she likes it or not -- she is it. But, Katniss has one thing on her mind: They left Peeta behind. Is he dead? Is he alive? Or is his fate even worse than death?

As teased in that final Mockingjay Part 1 trailer, Francis Lawrence’s film has an utterly different feel and tone than the first two The Hunger Games movies. It is now a war film, with a political thriller interwoven throughout. This is still a chess game, but it is elevated and the costs are much higher.

The director handles this adjustment effortlessly, and through his set-up (which is really what Mockingjay Part 1 is) for Mockingjay Part 2, we firmly see the world as it is now and how there are truly only two roads left for Katniss and her ilk -- revolution or assured death.

Liam Hemsworth Jennifer Lawrence Mockingjay Part 1

The trick here -- and it's largely a huge part of the mystery of the first act and some of the second -- is which direction Katniss will choose.

Like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 before, audiences need to know that they will be treated to a film that is, yes, self-contained, but is also part of something much bigger. It will end in a way that feels sudden as we wait a year until the concluding cinematic chapter.

But, it will also come to a close on a note that will have you stuck in your seat, shell-shocked at what has just happened.

Francis Lawrence and the entire The Hunger Games world has something truly special going for it, beyond fabulous source material from Collins. It has an acting cadre of supreme talent that brings these characters to life and makes what could be a simple YA adaptation feel like something a whole lot more epic.

Jennifer Lawrence shows off her Oscar-winning gifts as a whole new Katniss. This is not the self-sacrificing girl who volunteered to save her sister in the first film. This isn’t even the Katniss who rode into the second Hunger Games with confidence and a huge amount of confusion as to which of her two love interests she would choose.

The Oscar winner finds depths in her performance that are simultaneously tragic, heartbreaking and, yes, inspiring. This is truly a Mockingjay rising moment.

Mockingjay Philip Seymour Hoffman Julianne Moore

Then, there’s the cast that surrounds her. Having Moore as President Coin is a stroke of casting genius. She is commanding and compassionate, but don’t kid yourself… this is a woman who keenly has her eyes on the prize. And Katniss knows it, and through the twin towers of talent that are Jennifer Lawrence and Moore, their interchanges are electric and enigmatic.

And lastly, our Mockingjay Part 1 review concludes that the film arrives with a touch of sadness. Yes, this is the second-to-last The Hunger Games movie we will ever get.

But, mostly, this is one of the last times we will see Hoffman on the screen. He has taken his character from a Snow associate in Catching Fire to a political communications expert for President Coin that is savvy, cunning, but too has his own eyes on the prize.

See, everyone in this world has their own agenda. What is so fascinating about Mockingjay Part 1 is, even when Lorde’s Yellow Flicker Beat plays and the credits roll, we’re not sure what they are.

Is it 2015 yet?

Sacha Goldberger has done something extraordinary and we have to share with our readers.

The artist has taken some of our favorite superheroes (and one iconic villain) and had them pose like they were sitting for a portrait from a Renaissance painter.

Many even look like they’re ready for an audition for William Shakespeare himself!

After you see our slideshow below, you might just watch The Dark Knight online and have a chuckle the first time you see Batman go gruff. It’s hard to take someone seriously who has worn what he’s wearing in these pictures!

The last time we saw Iron Man, watch Iron Man 3 online for that, he looked a whole lot different than he does made up for a Renaissance painting!

Zoolander 2 Moves Forward: Penelope Cruz Joins Cast!

We knew that Zoolander 2 was more likely happening than not when Will Ferrell said that Mugatu will return. And now that Deadline is reporting that Penelope Cruz has joined the cast, there is no way this puppy is not moving full speed ahead.

Penelope Cruz Picture

Oscar winners don’t join comedy sequels unless they are firmly in place.

So, look for a version of the script that Justin Theroux wrote, that Ben Stiller revised (rewrote?) to hit the screen sometime in 2016, if we were to guess.

After the success of Anchorman 2, which took a decade to make, and Dumb and Dumber To, which took two decades to make, the 2001 cult hit Zoolander will finally be getting a second chapter.

Although Zoolander was a moderate success at the box office (and gave us those brilliant Zoolander quotes), it had the misfortune of opening merely weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Stiller’s cinematic alter ego has taken on cult classic status since as millions upon millions have viewed this comedy about male supermodels and evil international villains in the years since.

What role Cruz will play is a mystery, although we could see her as an Anna Wintour-type, or perhaps even someone still working in the high stakes world of modeling.

Watch Zoolander online and get ready for part two!

Will it join the list of best comedy sequels? Time will tell. Click through and see which ones we think are simply perfect.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Mike Myers knows a thing or two about minefields to avoid with comedy sequels. And he managed to avoid many of them with his follow-up to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. With The Spy Who Shagged Me, he kept the lampooning of the Bond franchise fierce, sharp and might we say -- even funnier than the first.

The Wedding Ringer Holiday Trailer: Kevin Hart Is a Priest?!

The holiday "restricted" The Wedding Ringer trailer has arrived and it is the gift that will keep on giving this entire season.

It takes what was previewed in the first The Wedding Ringer trailer and not only gives us a ton of hilarious new footage, but tosses in reactions for legions who saw the film in early screenings. And those reactions are pure amazement at the comedy power team that is Josh Gad and Kevin Hart.

We all know that Hart can bring the brilliance every day of the week (just check out these Ride Along quotes), and we’ve been extremely impressed by Gad since we first saw him in The Internship (and of course when you watch Frozen online with him as Olaf).

The Wedding Ringer tells the story of Gad, who is marrying Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, only there is one problem. He’s been so busy being a success, that he has no time for friends. And his fiance, well, she’s got a slew of bridesmaids. What’s a guy to do?

Hire Hart and his Best Man Inc. and he takes care of everything!

Look for The Wedding Ringer in theaters January 16, and in early December, don’t miss our interviews from the set with the cast and filmmakers behind this surefire first comedy hit of 2015!

The blockbuster Luc Besson written and directed, Scarlett Johansson starring action flick Lucy has made plans to plash down on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download. So, when will Johansson’s Lucy kick ass on home video and what high flying bonus features can we expect?

Lucy DVD

Lucy is set to land on digital download on January 6, 2015 and Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack on January 20, 2015.

Johansson could not have been better as Lucy (as our Lucy review reported) and the story that Besson penned and directed for his first directorial work in years is simply electric, smart and sensational.

As previewed in the Lucy trailer, Johansson’s Lucy was just enjoying her life in China, living abroad and dating a guy who seemed to mirror her desire to just have fun. Only, he took things too far when he drugged her and had her swept into a world of international drug dealers when she became an unwilling mule to carry narcotics across the glove for a mysterious cartel.

Here are the Lucy Blu-Ray bonus features:

  • Cerebral Capacity – The True Science of Lucy:  Morgan Freeman serves as guide for fans to dive into the world of Lucy.
  • The Evolution of Lucy -- Follow Lucy’s transformation through the eyes of Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman and Director Luc Besson.

Hot on the heels of that aca-amazing Pitch Perfect 2 trailer, Universal has released a series of stills from the highly anticipated sequel to Pitch Perfect.

The Bellas are back, and as we see from one of the photos, Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld has joined the cast – and it’s a great shot featuring another Oscar nominee, returning favorite Anna Kendrick.

The Troublemakers are back too, except… they might look a little, well, older!

We’ve also got a shot of Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins, who are back as the play-by-play a capella announcers who provided so much of the awesome humor in these Pitch Perfect quotes.

Remember when the film version of Fifty Shades of Grey was nothing but rumors and speculation? That is hardly the case anymore after we got that first Fifty Shades of Grey trailer last week. And today we’ve got the film’s first TV trailer.

The E.L. James novel comes to life with Dakota Johnson portraying Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan enveloping the man who she becomes all sorts of involved with, Christian Grey.

The film lands February 13, 2015 -- just in time for Valentine’s Day -- and also stars Luke Grimes, Rita Ora, Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle and Max Martini.

Now we suppose the only mystery to be solved with the release of the first film in what could be a trilogy (Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed were the literary follow-ups) is… will Fifty Shades of Grey be rated R, PG-13 or something entirely racier?

Planet of the Apes Could Be More Than A Trilogy: So Says Andy Serkis

As the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes DVD is readying to arrive on the world, Andy Serkis is talking about the future of the series. In an interview with MTV, the actor admitted what should be music to the ears of fans. After the incredible first two movies, it seems kind of limiting that this series should ONLY be a trilogy. Someone else shares those thoughts as well.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Andy Serkis

“It’s very, very early in where we choose to drop anchor in the next film. It could be five years after the event. It could be the night after the events of where we left Dawn. It’s very difficult to know where the story is going right at this moment because it’s being written as we speak,” Serkis said.

“I know that part of the desire for Matt [Reeves, director] to do this next movie is about continuing the enjoyment of seeing these apes evolve.”

Then, he said the words that we welcome and could not agree more on. “It might be three films. It could be four. It could be five. Who knows? But the journey will continue,” Serkis said.

“It might not necessarily be summarized or completely fulfilled in this next one. The point being, eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at The Planet of the Apes, but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.”

Get Hard Poster: Kevin Hart Readies Will Ferrell For Prison

$

Two of our favorite movie comics finally team up with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, as you saw in those Get Hard photos we ran earlier this week.

Warner Bros. has now given us the film’s first poster and it illustrates the heart of this comedy with one photo. Hart is getting Ferrell ready for prison, and that means first and foremost -- a new look.

Ferrell plays a financial wizard who (allegedly) took liberties with some of his clients' money and was found guilty. He’s been sentenced to do some hard time, and who better to help him get ready for the realities of prison than Hart, a man who (we’re guessing) has been there.

Our banker has 30 days to “get his affairs in order.”

Will that be enough time to Get Hard for life behind bars? We’re guessing that’s where a lot of the hilarity will come from.

And judging by its two stars and their ability to give us funny lines to repeat over and over -- such as Hart with those Ride Along quotes and Ferrell with his Anchorman quotes -- anticipation is super high for their latest comedy.

Get Hard bows in theaters March 27, 2015.

Into the Storm DVD Review: A Howling Ride

$

If nothing else, Into the Storm features some of the most astounding weather footage ever caught on film. The film follows a group of storm chasers as they encounter a once in a lifetime series of tornadoes that descend on a small town. Into the Storm is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download for home audiences to get all sorts of swept away.

Into the Storm DVD

Director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) has brought a whole different kind of terror with his latest. Sarah Wayne Callies plays a meteorologist who, painfully, has to be away from her daughter (thus the emotional pull of the film) during tornado season as she works for a group of storm chasers who are among the best at what they do. But, they have been the last to the party, so to speak, for the last few tornado touchdowns, and the pressure is on to score video of weather devastation before anyone else.

As you can see from the Into the Storm trailer, Callies finds the mother of all tornadoes. In fact, there are quite a few, and they are all causing havoc in a small town where we find Richard Armitage’s school administrator who is simultaneously trying to raise teenage boys solo and run a school graduation as a storm looms.

Our theatricalInto the Storm review found the film quite original, although lacking in much drama. The Into the Storm DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download is a fascinating pick-up for those who watch special effects-driven movies and wonder, “How did they do that?” And there are plenty of answers in this package!

Into the Storm: Tornado Files takes the viewer to the front lines of the science behind the weather conditions that create these monster storms. And yes, they even explore how our changing weather patterns have produced more of these super storms in recent years and how science is finding that that will not slow down. If anything, massive storms will increase. We also get to ride along during Into the Storm: Tornado Files with the real life storm chaser Reed Timer, who brings to life many of the fictional facets of the thrilling scenes portrayed in the film.

Our storm chasers in Into the Storm ride around in a weather-proof tank, known as Titus. The bonus featurette Titus: The Ultimate Storm Chasing Vehicle shows how the monster was constructed and how it is based on a reality that exists where these vehicles can withstand winds that would send other cars and trucks whooping into the air.

Lastly, Fake Storms: Real Conditions shows how it was for the cast to make a movie where there were, clearly, no actual storms threatening them. But, the rain and wind machines made it feel all too real. Acting on screen is always a challenge, but in conditions like this, these actors show us they have never been so challenged in their careers. Flying debris and being pulled around by wires is no ordinary movie-making experience!

Weekend Movie Preview: November 21, 2014

This second-to-last weekend of November is all about one thing: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

That's right, the wait is over as the first half of the final chapter in The Hunger Games saga has arrived and it is going to be a surefire hit, as every other studio on the planet has stayed clear of this weekend which has allowed the Francis Lawrence film to stand all on its own.

Mockingjay Part 1: For everyone seeing this movie, right off the bat we have to say that you have to keep in mind that this is merely part one. Director Lawrence has built up quite a swell of emotion and action, but it will leave you hanging! And that is a very good thing.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Is Plutarch Heavensbee
Plutarch Heavensbee is playing both sides and we like the way this game master has "mastered" the "game."

As we stated in our Mockingjay Part 1 review, Jennifer Lawrence is astounding as Katniss as the emotional roller coaster she is on had to be the utmost challenge to the Oscar-winning actress.

And Lawrence -- the director -- has filled out his cast with Oscar winners and Oscar nominees that bring this first chapter of the final two movies to life. Julianne Moore rivets as President Coin and Philip Seymour Hoffman does it again, except in this movie, he is switching sides from where we last saw him in Catching Fire.

What we recommend that is also in theaters, in case your Mockingjay Part 1 showing is sold out!

Dumb and Dumber To: Although not as funny as the first film, this time out the laughs still come, they're just fewer and more far between.

Harry As Lucy? Hardly!`
Harry gets his turn in the Lucy parody poster!

As our Dumb and Dumber To review pointed out, seeing Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back in the roles they made famous in 1994 is alone worth the price of admission. Just don't expect the same laugh-a-minute ride as the first time around.

Beyond the Lights: One of the best movies that has hit screens in recent memories tells the story of a young girl who dreams of pop stardom. The thing is, her mother has even bigger dreams for her, and those two hopes don't necessarily jive.

Nate Parker and Gugu Mbatha-Raw Have a Moment
The chemistry between Parker and Mbatha-Raw is palpable.

Our Beyond the Lights review could not recommend this movie more as it comes to life with power, emotion, romance and music that will have you feeling like a triumph by the time the credits roll.

Foxcatcher: The Oscar buzz is high for the film that finds Steve Carell as John du Pont, the chemical heir who would murder a wrestler under his guise in the late '80s.

Foxcatcher Cast Poster
The Foxcatcher cast photo features three stars in one riveting movie... Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo.

Although our Foxcatcher review found Carell amazing, we feel that the real Oscar attention here should fall on Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as the wrestling Schultz brothers.

Feel like staying in this weekend?

Several titles have landed on digital download. Watch 22 Jump Street online and don't miss Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill killing it as undercover cops in college. The Stand Movie Is Happening: Stephen King’s Book Will Be Four Films!

$

0

Stephen King’s The Stand has had many talented people trying to make the 1978 novel into a big screen movie. Sure, it was TV series, but if there was a format that would make King’s story come alive, it is film. Writer-director Josh Boone (see his latest and watch The Fault in Our Stars online) is attached and he spoke with Kevin Smith for his podcast and updated us on where’s he at with The Stand. And it appears that filmmaker and studio (Warner Bros.) are on the same page.

Stephen King's The Stand

This thing is going to be four movies, people!

“I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie. I sold [the studio] on a single, three hour movie,” Boone said.

“So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months. Everybody loves it. [Stephen] King loves it. $87 million is what it was budgeted at. Really expensive for a horror drama that doesn’t have set pieces. They came back and said ‘Would you do it as multiple films?’ and I said ‘(expletive) yes!’…So I think we are going to do like four movies.”

The Stand is King’s truly epic tale of a full on end of the world that happens after a biological weapon is released. Good and evil will fight over what’s left.

Boone is clearly more than willing to take that finished script and expand it into a quadrilogy.

“I loved my script, but I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version this way,” he said.

“I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do The Stand at the highest level you can do it at with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about. We’re looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring.”

Rehearsals are underway for a film that was almost not to be, The Hateful Eight.

After The Hateful Eight script leaked, writer-director Quentin Tarantino decided he would write something else and scrapped the project. Then, he held a live reading and the response was massive… so he (thankfully) changed his mind.

Well, The Hateful Eight cast was recently announced by Tarantino, and they’ve been rehearsing. One of the film’s stars, Samuel L. Jackson, even Tweeted a couple of photos from the rehearsal and it looks like everyone’s present.

Yup, that’s Tarantino giving direction in the background, with Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern and Jennifer Jason Leigh listening intently.

Also in this shot is Tim Roth (who with Madsen are reuniting with Tarantino) and Demian Bichir, who is making his Tarantino debut!

The Hateful Eight opens in late 2015 and will head off to Colorado to start shooting in December.

Usually Thanksgiving Day and the day after are quite quiet in the movie world, except if you’re one of the millions in line to buy flicks on Black Friday! But this year, it is different.

This Thursday (as we’ve seen in that Jurassic World teaser trailer), the highly anticipated sequel to Jurassic Park will preview its first trailer.

Now, we have word that this Black Friday, a few less people might be in line at stores because the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer will debut in nine select theaters.

If you live near one of these nine Regal Theatres, consider yourself gifted with The Force!

  • Irvine, CA Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX

And look for Star Wars: The Force Awakens December 18, 2015.

Han Solo Must Have a Huge Part
We've heard that Harrison Ford's Han Solo has an enormous part in the seventh Star Wars movie. Ford would not have signed on to J.J. Abrams' film if that was not the case.
