Avatar Sequels: James Cameron Calls Them “Bitchin”

$

0

You can forgive James Cameron if he’s a little excited and proud of the work he’s doing on Avatar 2, 3 and 4. After all, the first time he headed into that blue alien world, the fruit of his labor turned into the highest grossing movie of all time.

James Cameron Gives Direction

As Cameron works away in New Zealand on the three sequels to Avatar, he opened up for an interview conducted by another fellow who knows a thing or two about big movies, Peter Jackson. Jackson is guest editing the current issue of Empire Magazine and asked his friend Cameron for a little insight into the future of Avatar.

“I can tell you one thing about them. They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will (expletive) yourself with your mouth wide open,” Cameron proudly stated.

The filmmaker who first introduced himself to us with The Terminator said what has been taking so long is that he tasked a team of writers (Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno) to work on the three Avatar sequels, and perfection takes time.

“I think we met for seven months and we white-boarded out every scene in every film together and I didn’t assign each writer which film they were going to work on until the last day,” Cameron said.

“I knew if I assigned them their scripts ahead of time, they’d tune out every time we were talking about the other movie.”

Look for Avatar 2, 3 and 4 in 2016, ’17 and ’18. Until then, watch Avatar online

The Expendables 3 DVD Review: Biggest Action Stars Come Home

$

0

When it was announced that the Sylvester Stallone-founded The Expendables was going to get some of the biggest names in action to join his third film in the series, anticipation was so high for The Expendables 3. Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas joining Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a gaggle of other Expendables vets in one movie -- are you kidding me?

Now that The Expendables 3 has landed on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, the entire world can check out the fruits of their labor on home video. Does the addition of great action heroes add up to a great flick?

The Expendables 3 Blu-Ray

What Stallone does well with this Expendables movie is he still manages to give each superstar and the supporting action stars plenty of equal screen time. That had to be an enormous challenge. And the story for this film, teased in The Expendables 3 trailer, is actually quite interesting by focusing on Gibson’s character, who we learn is a founding member of The Expendables and was left for dead. Yeah, he kind of holds a grudge.

It is also fascinating that Stallone, while adding aging action superstars to the mix, also sought to get some younger ones. So, much of the first act involves him traveling around with Kelsey Grammer’s character (he is bombastically brilliant and adds laughs to a less humor-filled film than the previous three) looking for young blood.

That is how we get Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz, among others.

What this juncture of old and young has us wondering is if Stallone is looking to hand off the franchise to a younger crowd? But, doesn’t that go against the entire idea of The Expendables movies? We like seeing our favorite action heroes from another era suit up and go into battle once more tossing one-liners (check out our The Expendables 3 quotes) as quick as their bullets fly out of their guns.

That’s why our theatrical The Expendables 3 review found the film not the best of the three, but not a horrible movie by a long shot. It just seems confused as to what direction it wants to go in. But that aside, The Expendables 3 is still a fun joyride of mindless fun that is oftentimes quite explosive.

The Expendables 3 Cast Pic

When it comes to the bonus features, the highlight has to be The Expendables 3 Documentary. The big appeal of seeing the film itself is witnessing our favorite action stars in one film and what is such a treat about The Expendables 3 Documentary is that we get to see all these superstars just hanging out making a blockbuster movie. What are Ford, Banderas, Gibson, Schwarzenegger and Stallone like when the cameras aren't rolling? Now, we know.

We also quite enjoyed a look at the new members of the team who could be action heroes of the future with the New Blood: Stacked and Jacked featurette. If indeed the franchise heads in a younger direction, Stallone is in good hands. And if it doesn’t, well, we were treated to a preview of some of our favorite action stars of tomorrow in a movie that celebrates the action heroes of yesterday.

And one more thing… Jason Statham’s Christmas is one of our favorite characters in this entire The Expendables world. The Christmas Runs the Gauntlet extended scene… well, let’s just say watch it and enjoy some Statham sizzle.

9 Worst Movie Spin-Offs in Film History

With Penguins of Madagascar hitting theaters and soaring on so many levels, it reminded us that movie spin-offs can work.

More often than not, they are just this side of awful and prove to be an utter waste of the audience's time.

So, which movie spin-offs are the worst?

We found nine spin-offs that should never have been green lit.

I mean, watch American Pie online and why on earth would you watch its spin-off we mention below in our slideshow?

Watch The Fugitive online and you have to wonder why Tommy Lee Jones would follow up his Oscar-winning turn in that film as the title character in its spin-off.

Hotel Transylvania 2: Mel Brooks Playing Adam Sandler's Dad!

We’ve got a piece of casting news that is just utterly brilliant. Comedy icon Mel Brooks has been cast as the father of Adam Sandler’s Dracula in the upcoming animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2.

We’ve got the first photo of Brooks as Vlad (we’re guessing The Impaler, aka the first Dracula). And is it us or does Sandler’s Dracula look utterly thrilled to see his father?

Hotel Transylvania 2 Mel Brooks Adam Sandler

Brooks is no stranger to horror comedies as his Young Frankenstein arrived in 1974 and is considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best funny film of all time.

The plot of Hotel Transylvania 2 follows a family gathering which brings Brooks’ Vlad to Dracula’s Transylvania landmark. And his arrival will mean different things to the different guests of Drac’s establishment including Steve Buscemi’s Werewolf and Kevin James’ Frank(enstein).

“Vlad doesn’t treat Dracula with a lot of respect and they’re often at odds. It makes for some wonderful comedy,” Brooks told USA Today, where the picture premiered.

Genndy Tartakovsky is back to helm the series he started when you watch Hotel Transylvania online. The film is set to land September 25, 2015 and, yes, Selena Gomez and Jesse Eisenberg will also return.

Kingsman The Secret Service Character Posters: Firth, Colin Firth!

Fox has released a series of new character posters for its upcoming spy flick Kingsman: The Secret Service.

It features the film’s stars -- Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Taron Egerton and Jack Bauer. No, that’s not a typo -- the dog’s name is Jack Bauer. Good name for a dog, no?

As you can see from the Kingsman: The Secret Service trailer, the film from Matthew Vaughn (one of our favorite directors), is based on the Mark Millar graphic novel and brings it to the big screen.

It chronicles how a leader in that top secret agent group (Firth) recruits a young upstart (Egerton) and together they launch into a series of adventures that from what we can tell so far, reminds us of another English spy franchise… yup, Bond, James Bond.

Speaking of that… is it us, or do the below character posters in our slideshow remind you of that same license to kill spy and an iconic movie poster from the early 80s?

Dead ringer, isn’t it?

Kingsman: The Secret Service also stars Mark Strong, Jack Davenport and Mark Hamill and will land in theaters February 13.

The Imitation Game Review: Benedict Cumberbatch Rivets in True Tale

Benedict Cumberbatch is quickly becoming one of the most popular and supremely talented actors of his generation. That expertise of his craft is illustrated profusely throughout The Imitation Game, and is a performance that will undoubtedly result in Cumberbatch’s first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The Imitation Game Benedict Cumberbatch Keira Knightley

Cumberbatch is Alan Turing, the man credited with cracking the German Enigma code that would eventually lead to the Allies winning World War II. You also learn watching The Imitation Game that he is the father of what will become the modern computer.

That is why it is so tragic that what happened to Turing was his complete and utter personal destruction when he was arrested for indecency for engaging in homosexual acts years after the war ended.

As teased in The Imitation Game trailer, we meet Turing as he is “interviewing” for a job with the British defense. World War II has taken its toll on his country and his lack of respect for the uniform is off-putting to his potential superior, Commander Denniston (Charles Dance). But, his incredible brilliance and supreme confidence in his ability as a mathematician -- when brilliant minds are so needed to crack the Enigma code -- forces Denniston to offer him the job and surround him with a team.

Of course, he then believes that the team is holding him back, except for a few stand-outs, including a woman who had to fight dearly to even be considered because of her gender, Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley).

Together they will all learn to work together because there is a bigger picture fight at hand, expertly laid out by director Morten Tyldum from the screenplay by Graham Moore (based on the book by Andrew Hodges).

Although much of the story focuses on this team of brilliant minds (especially Turing) and the effort they are undertaking to crack this code and be able to stop the Nazi advance that at this rate, will take over all of Europe, and likely the world -- Tyldum shows us why the work they are doing is so important with the prolific death and destruction that is this war.

The Imitation Game Poster

What else Tyldum does that is so masterful is he manages to make something so thrilling and breathtaking that could be so mundane. Mathematics and the basics of computer science don’t usually add up to plot points that make up the chemistry of a thriller. But in The Imitation Game it absolutely thrills. There is a race against time aspect to this film that you can literally feel the clock ticking. This team has to achieve their goal or hundreds of thousands of lives and freedom itself will be lost.

And yet The Imitation Game is also quite personal. It is a human story about love, working with people of varied backgrounds towards a shared goal and most of all it explores the very nature of what makes us human.

Cumberbatch is a force of nature. He has held us spellbound in countless movies, most recently when you watch The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug online. But, this is his moment and he gives it his all and then some. Matching him in that effort is Knightley. She too will likely hear her name as an Oscar nominee when they are announced. Her character has many of the same challenges as Turing and their friendship and, yes, love, is the very heartbeat of this film.

Benedict Cumberbatch The Imitation Game

Our The Imitation Game review cannot recommend this film enough. It is easily one of the best of 2014 and the cinematic collective that is Tyldum’s work will also likely be given the title Best Picture nominee.

Lastly, watching this film makes us think on a supremely larger scale.

It makes us wonder how many brilliant minds over the course of human history were persecuted for their beliefs, their sexuality, their looks, their intellect or any number of reasons. And how many of those wound up being pushed out of what they love and even perished due to the persecution?

Can you imagine where we would be as a society if they had not lived their lives in shadows or in fear, but had the freedom to be who they were born to be and everything that that means?

The world would be a much better and enriching place.

Watch Star Trek Into Darkness online for another fantastic performance by Cumberbatch.

Fifty Shades of Grey Photos: Meet The Grey Family

All those Fifty Shades of Grey stills have done their fair share of teasing the chemistry and heat between Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson).

But all that headline-making news about who would be playing the other parts of the movie, we were starting to wonder when we’d meet anyone else involved in this highly anticipated movie!

It’s that time!

Ladies and gentlemen, please meet the family Grey.

Focus Features has released a trio of photos from the film that lands February 13, 2015 and we get to meet Christian’s adopted sister Mia (Rita Ora), and his parents Grace (Marcia Gay Harden) and Carrick (Andrew Airlie).

Even that Fifty Shades of Grey trailer truly focused on the two leads, so this is nice to finally meet the family!

We have a feeling we’ll be meeting more people involved in this story, including Jennifer Ehle, Max Martini, Eloise Mumford and Dylan Neal in the coming weeks!

Kevin, Bob, Stuart and the boys collectively known as the Minions are in the holiday spirit. And why wouldn’t they be?

After that Minions trailer teased what is going to be their first solo movie, we’d be singing Christmas carols too right about now!

Universal and AMC have partnered to give us this holiday greetings video from our favorite part of the Despicable Me movies – all while getting us uber-psyched for their arrival on screens next summer.

The spin-off movie (we’re so sure it won’t be one that could land on our 9 worst movie spin-offs in history) promises Sandra Bullock (as the super villain they eventually hook up with) and Jon Hamm, in an as yet not described role.

Universal Pictures also gave us a full synopsis of what to expect from the movie that lands July 10, 2015.

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters -- from T. Rex to Napoleon -- the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he -- alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob -- ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind… from annihilation.

And be sure to watch Despicable Me 2 online to see what the Minions were last up to.

No Black Friday sale can compare with the joy achieved this morning as the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer has arrived!

It begins with a landscape shot of a sandy planet (could it be Tattooine?) and a close-up on John Boyega in a Storm Trooper uniform with his helmet off. He is deeply concerned and he starts running… and we’re off!

We don’t get to see any of our faves that are back, such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill or even Anthony Daniels as C3PO -- but we do get the Millennium Falcon!

Watching Daisy Ridley take off on her vehicle and knowing that “something has awakened,” as the teaser says, is enough for us.

Look for more from the world of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the film’s release date of December 18, 2015 inches closer.

Paul Walker Remembered a Year Later: RIP Furious 7 Star!

I’ll never forget walking out of a press screening a year ago last night of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and instead of a lobby full of film journalists talking about the explosive performance of Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role of that middle Hobbit movie, there was utter silence as everyone in the room looked hauntingly at their smart phones.

Paul Walker Furious 7

Paul Walker had died. And it is hard to believe that it has been a year since that awful day.

As anyone who watched that E! special that served as the debut of the Furious 7 trailer could tell, the cast of the seventh Fast and Furious movie is nowhere near getting over the loss of their beloved co-star and friend. As the crowd cheered the trailer’s conclusion and Maria Menounos tried to ask the cast questions about it, they all embraced and tears were flowing.

Well, in light of the year anniversary of Walker’s death, those co-stars took to social media to talk about the loss of their dear compatriot.

Vin Diesel took to his social media pages and posted the following beautiful sentiment:

“He was a part of so much in my life … long personal talks with my mother or babysitting the Alpha Angel … he took a certain pride in being uncle Pablo."

"After all, we were filming a scene in FF4 the day she was born, and he being the only one I told, encouraged me to go in and cut the umbilical cord."

"He was an important part of my transition into fatherhood, that healthy family member, with the most positive outlook on life. A year ago today ..."

"A year of mourning… and his absence still leaves me speechless."

Michelle Rodriguez too took to her social media pages and wrote, “I love you Paul. Your living in the hearts of all who love you for sure. Sending mad love out to Heaven @SupportROWW.”

Tyrese also remembered his dear friend by saying, "To this day his arm is still around my neck with love and protection… Rest in heaven…”

"In this life one would hope to be this ‘effective’ 1 year ago today God called an angel home early. I miss my brother I miss my friend and I miss OUR STAR!!!!!"

"Physically gone but forever alive in our minds, hearts and spirit… What was once tears of pain and shock are now tears of JOY celebrating all that you stood for…"

"Everyone worldwide please take 5 mins out of your day to send life, prayers and energy to Paul’s family his daughter Meadow and immediate circle today."

Paul Walker Interview Photo

“A celebration of Paul William Walker will be echoed around the world."

Many fans also made a pilgrimage to the Santa Clarita, California site of the crash that claimed Walker.

Walker lives on with his movies, and what a way to remember him with two of his best… watch Fast and Furious 6 online and watch Hours online.

And Movie Fanatic is beyond touched to have conducted one of the last Paul Walker interviews ever (the photo above is from it!). We miss him too.

Rest in peace, Paul Walker.

Cinderella Character Poster: Cate Blanchett’s Wicked Stepmother!

One of the things that truly struck us with the debut of that Cinderella trailer was the casting of Cate Blanchett as the Wicked Stepmother.

The Oscar winner could not have been a better choice to make Cinderella’s (Lily James) life a living hell. Surrounded by her daughters, Blanchett gets the character poster treatment in the first of its kind from Disney.

Cinderella lands in theaters March 13, 2015 and is from director Kenneth Branagh and that was just one of the 9 things that impressed us from the Cinderella trailer.

With Branagh’s Shakespearean background, we think he’ll bring something truly special to the live action version of the Disney classic.

Since Disney has had such luck bringing animated stories to life in live action, watch Maleficent online for proof of that, it appears that the Mouse House will have another smash hit on their hands with Cinderella.

The Giver DVD Review: Beloved YA Novel Finally Becomes Movie

$

0

The Giver is a beloved young adult novel by Lois Lowry that has enchanted and enthralled generations. It took a long time and a whole lot of effort to make it to the big screen, but it finally arrived as a Phillip Noyce (Salt) directed flick with none other than Oscar winners Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep headlining.

The Giver DVD

Now, The Giver has arrived on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download and the story of a world where conformity is key can enrapture a whole new audience.

As teased in The Giver trailer, Brenton Thwaites plays the son of Alexander Skarsgard and Katie Holmes. They live in a world where a great divide almost ended the human race, but thanks to the central government and their ability to remove emotion from humans, a society has emerged and fruitfully moved into the future.

But, two things happen. Thwaites’ fate is sealed when he learns that his life role in society is to become the next Giver. He will train with Bridges' Giver and learn the secrets to our past that only stay with him. Someone has to recall our history, but it is deemed something that is not necessary to be known by the society as a whole. When Thwaites sees a world that doesn’t exist anymore, he stops taking his daily shot that suppresses emotional responses and sees things in a whole new light.

And that is an enormous threat to the status quo, led by Streep’s ruler.

Our theatrical The Giver review found the film a bit disappointing and lacking in potential power that was present in Lowry’s book -- although on home video it is a nice format to finally see the author’s vision come to life cinematically. It has long been a passion project for Bridges and that comes through immensely with The Giver bonus features.

The Giver Poster

Jeff Bridges Presents The Original Script Reading Featuring Lloyd Bridges is a fascinating look at just how the younger Bridges was so taken with the novel and even imagined the film as a vehicle for his late father. Jeff would eventually play the role in the version we got, but as you see in this featurette, the son wanted his father to play the role many years ago.

As a fan of Noyce’s work, we also treasured the documentary short Making The Giver: From Page to Screen. Watching the brilliant director do his thing and take such care in bringing to life a novel that is so beloved is truly special. This featurette is also another angle on the passion for the book that Bridges had! It’s hard not to notice the superstar’s adoration of all things The Giver.

For fans of the band One Republic, you’ll want to check out the look at making the Ordinary Human song from the soundtrack.

But the best of the bonus feature bunch has to be Author Lois Lowry on The Giver. Given that it is her world, and also that she has the perspective of having decades of living with these characters in her mind, Lowry’s take on the world of The Giver is utterly priceless.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has released a clip and after seeing the film, it is quite the pivotal moment in the story.

Gandalf has arrived on the front lines of the battle with news about eminent danger for allies fighting on another front that need to be warned about incoming Orcs that no one knows about.

Lee Pace’s Thranduil refuses to warn the armies as he has “shed enough Elven blood” in this fight.

It is then that Bilbo volunteers because he has a plan. He knows “they won’t see me coming.”

Gee, I wonder why? Perhaps it has something to do with a certain ring?
