Fury DVD Review: Brad Pitt's War Drama Delivers

$

David Ayer is becoming quite the master storyteller and that fact was front and center with his latest, Fury. Brad Pitt plays the leader of a tank crew behind enemy lines during the closing weeks of World War II in Germany, fighting for their lives against a foe that attacks like they have nothing to lose.

Fury DVD

The powerful flick features astounding performances from Pitt, as well as Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal and Logan Lerman and is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Ayer is a talent at building films that are action flicks at their heart, but have well constructed characters that have us truly caring whether these souls live or die and in this case, what form they will even make it home.

There’s something unique about life in a tank and few films have captured it as well as Ayer does with his screenplay that has given us those riveting and powerful Fury quotes. And as we reported in our theatrical Fury review that delves further into the movie itself, the flick joins an elite group of war movies that present the horrors and heroism of the battlefield with such vivid presence and visuals and sounds that explode off the screen.

The Fury DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download feature over 50 minutes of deleted and extended scenes and four don’t-miss behind-the-scenes featurettes that take the viewer into the war it took to get Fury made and to have it properly salute those who truly served our country, particularly those tank brigades.

Prepare to get into the driver’s seat of Pitt’s tank as he forges through Nazi Germany at the end of a journey that found him, “Killing Germans in Africa and now killing Germans in Germany.” It is something to behold on many levels and that comes through on each and every frame of the Fury bonus features.

We have to start by saluting the featurette Blood Brothers which has Ayer and his all-star cast talking about each of their own unique challenges in joining the project, and bringing this tank-centered cinematic adventure to life. What becomes clear in this documentary short about the making of Fury is that Ayer was like the general and the cast and crew his charges. This filmmaking process worked very much like a military operation and that is fitting given the real life heroes they were saluting. The writer-director had a keen vision and if executed to a “T,” his cast and crew would create something truly special… and that is exactly what they have done.

What is ever-present in the behind-the-scenes featurettes and even is sensed from the film itself is that Pitt, LaBeouf and the entire cast knew that although they were not portraying real characters, there were real Americans who lived this experience for years and years. It was paramount to them, above all else, that they do it right. That reverence is seen and shown in the bonus feature Armored Warriors: The Real Men Inside the Shermans.

The men who served in Sherman tanks across the European theater chime in on their own experiences and how Fury captures it better than most tank-based World War II movies ever have. It is a priceless addition to this home video package and worth multiple viewings.

Ayer is a perfectionist and given a movie like Fury, that could not be a better trait in a writer-director. That can be seen in his previous work from his screenplay for Training Day to his directorial debut with End of Watch.

The helmer insisted that all his cast knew how to work a real tank and that effort is chronicled in the brilliant Taming the Beast: How to Drive, Fire & Shoot Inside a 30-Ton Tank.

What else is present in that featurette is that Ayer is as much a student as his cast because how he actually shot the battle sequences is what makes us feel like we’re right there with Pitt and his team. The featurette has experts that demonstrate how the giant Sherman tanks operate and fire. The "you are there" feeling is ever-present, just like it is in the cinematic experience that is Fury.

Given that this is so Ayer’s baby, lastly we have to tip our hat to the Director’s Combat Journal featurette. Ayer gives a firsthand account of his months and months spent researching and shooting his film in the English countryside, finding authentic tanks to further add to that reality factor and trying to up the ante on World War II movies that have come before.

Watch Fury online and you’ll see that he achieved that and much more.

Steve Jobs Biopic: Starts Shooting, Gets Official Title

As huge fans of both actors, for us it was a wash when Christian Bale quit the Steve Jobs biopic and Michael Fassbender stepped in. Either way, you’re getting a winner who will go deep in the portrayal of an American icon. And the fact that the script is penned by The Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire), well, I’d say we have one highly anticipated biopic.

Steve Jobs: RIP

There was just one problem. What was it going to be called?

Now we have the answer as Universal has announced that Steve Jobs has started filming in the Bay Area and that the story will take place over the course of three legendary product launches. The last one will be the 1998 iconic reveal of the iMac.

Sorkin can do no wrong in the screenplay department as we saw with those Social Network quotes and the fact that he’s working from the best-selling biography of the Apple founder from Walter Isaacson, has us even more excited.

Kate Winslet is attached to play the marketing chief of Macintosh, Joanna Hoffman, and Seth Rogen is set to star as Jobs’ co-founder, Steve Wozniak.

We have no release date yet for Steve Jobs, but stay tuned as we’re sure this version will make quite a bit more impact than that other Jobs biopic, called… Jobs

The Drop DVD Review: James Gandolfini Leaves Us on A High Note

$
0
0

When The Drop landed last fall, it truly rocked us as few crime dramas did in 2014. Sure, the biggest reason to witness this rich character driven thriller was that it was the final film from the astounding James Gandolfini. But, as our theatricalThe Drop review pointed out, he and co-star Tom Hardy joined forces to create one of the more underrated must-see movies of the year.

The Drop DVD

Now that The Drop is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, we hope that it finds a larger audience. And if people take an interest simply because it is Gandolfini’s final role, there are worse reasons for a great film to gather a following!

As teased in The Drop trailer, Hardy and Gandolfini are bartender and pub owner who work at a Brooklyn dive bar that is known in the underworld as one of the places across The City for a drop. What is that, you ask? A locale where the mob can drop off money, pick up money and generally serves as a “filling station” for laundering cash.

On the evening of one of these drops, a couple of hoods choose the wrong night to stage a robbery. Do they have any idea who they’re ripping off? Gandolfini and Hardy both ask that of them, but they pay no mind and make off with way more money than they ever expected by simply heisting a Brooklyn bar.

Now, the mob is not going to care who took the money, they just want it. And what’s worse, they think that Hardy and Gandolfini had something to do with it. What they do and how they get out of it (if they even do!) is the crux of Michael R. Roskam and Dennis Lehane’s powerful film.

Roskham directs from Lehane’s riveting screenplay, based on his short story Animal Rescue.

The Drop Tom Hardy Noomi Rapace

It’s not all scummy bars, mob enforcers and two guys who are just trying to get ahead. The Drop also features a fantastic romance between Hardy and Noomi Rapace’s Nadia. And the reason these two even get together is centered around one of the cutest dogs you will ever see on screen. No spoilers here -- just watch The Drop online right now and you’ll be so thrilled you did.

When it comes to bonus features on The Drop DVD and Blu-Ray, the highlight has to be the featurette that takes a closer look at the man who was a huge star, on both stage, TV and screen, but in his heart, was one of the greatest character actors that lived.

Character Profile: James Gandolfini is an intense and lovable look at the man who left us too soon. If he had to leave us, exiting on a powerful turn like the performance he gives in The Drop was a gift to his fans and cinematic appreciators the world over. This featurette delves deeper into why he was so special and how, even though he was a big star, he could just disappear into a supporting role like in The Drop. That was just one aspect of many that made him pure gold.

Keeping it Real and Making Brooklyn Your Own are each fascinating featurettes in that they explore the unique and difficult task of making a movie set in the New York borough that feels, well, real. That is no easy task. For those who live there or are from there, there is a swagger, a speech cadence and an attitude that more often than not the movie world gets wrong. We were delighted with how Roskham, Lehane and the cast took to the challenge and these two bonus features showcase how they did it.

And lastly, we mentioned that adorable dog that if Oscars were given out for canine co-stars, would have run away with the race this year. Rocco the Dog is a delightful featurette that looks at how this little four-legged guy almost outshined one of the greatest actors of his generation who sadly won’t be entertaining and enlightening us anymore.

The Drop delivers, and for fans of this genre, it is a must-see. And for Gandolfini fanatics, it is a must own.

The final poster for Insurgent has landed and it kind of reminds us of a John Woo movie!

Ghostbusters Reboot Release Date: Revealed!

Now that we know the Ghostbusters reboot cast, all we need to know is when we can put that film’s release date in pen on our calendar. Thanks to director Paul Feig and his latest Twitter post, we know!

Ghostbusters Logo

Look for Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig to do their best to not cross the streams when Ghostbusters hits theaters… let’s use Feig’s words, “In other news, #Ghostbusters will be hitting theaters July 22, 2016. Save the date!”

Consider the date saved, Paul!

Those Ghostbusters quotes are among our favorite from a comedy of all time and we know that Feig and his team have a tall mountain to climb, but we’re incredibly excited about this reboot. We think they’re pushing all the right buttons.

First, by rebooting it and having an all-female comedy veteran cast, it gives it a fresh spin that will help us (somewhat) forget the original.

Second, since the sequel was not nearly as good as the original Ghostbusters, we believe that audiences are ready for a fresh incarnation on a storyline that we know and love.

And lastly, the comic chemistry and dramatic abilities of the four actresses cast by Feig and his team could not be more perfect.

We have a feeling this thing will rock.

Top 25 Time Travel Movies: From Back to the Future to The Terminator!

Project Almanac has landed and gives both the time travel and found footage subgenre of the movies a real original premise. Kids with cameras invent a time machine and of course we all know teenagers and a time machine is probably not a good idea.

But, it did get us thinking about time travel movies.

That is one difficult nut to crack. There are many plot land mines that can be exposed with a time travel movie. If the thing doesn’t add up, well then, the entire movie fails.

We found 25 time travel movies that we think are the best of all time and they come in all forms.

As you can see from these Groundhog Day quotes, time travel can be funny – especially if it’s Bill Murray frustratingly trying to make one day turn to the next.

Time travel can also be a thrilling sci-fi action adventure that proves revolutionary on many fronts, just watch The Terminator online and the James Cameron classic has all the qualities of one of the best time travel movies in history.

Watch Back to the Future online and you knew that flick had to be there. It’s a classic! But, where does it rank? Could it possibly come in first?!

Click through the slideshow below as we proudly unveil our top 25 time travel movies of… all time!

Hot Tub Time Machine
It was the silliest of ideas, a group of guys hop in a hot tub and get transferred back in time to the '80s where they get to relive a wild weekend of their youth. And the biggest shock was that the John Cusack-starring comedy worked. So much so, that we're getting Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

Paul Bettany Dishes The Vision & Seeking to “Understand the Universe”

Although he has yet to be seen in the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, we know that Paul Bettany is The Vision. Bettany is talking about the superhero character and how he dove into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a true neophyte. Yup, he hadn’t seen many of the films and found them a true joy.

Avengers Age of Ultron The Vision Concept Art

“I did a lot of research and my research was watching all of the films. I realized they are so interlinked and I wanted to understand the universe I was in. So I did and it was a really amazing, fun experience,” Bettany told News Australia.

Bettany is JARVIS in the Iron Man movies, but all of his work on those Tony Stark-centered films involved him being isolated in a recording booth. So, you can imagine his joy at being able to be on a set with Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“Everybody made me feel really at home. They are really funny people and really creative. I have never seen sets that big in my whole career. I have never seen set pieces like it. We were in a set that felt like a town!”

So, The Vision is in The Avengers sequel, but could we see him in Captain America: Civil War and beyond? Odds are yes, but Bettany himself has his own theories.

Well, having a long-term contract certainly makes one think that they have a secured gig for years to come!

“That’s the really great thing about the Marvel gig for me. I have never known if I have had a job six months out ever in my life. And now I know that they have plans and I can be even more judicious about the stuff that I do outside of that work,” he said.

“I can wait for the right thing and feel really attached to it.”

The Huntsman: No Snow White, No Dwarves… So Who Is In This Sequel?

$

We know that we’re getting a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman. And we know that it will just feature Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman. It will not have Kristen Stewart’s Snow White or the director, Rupert Sanders, who she scandalously had an affair with. Nobody wants that stink surrounding their sequel. So with no Snow White, there will definitely be no dwarves.

Chris Hemsworth Snow White and the Huntsman Poster

And considering that Charlize Theron’s evil queen was taken care of at the end of Snow White and the Huntsman, exactly who will be in this film?

The film has a director, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, so that’s a good thing. And here’s a shocker, Theron’s evil queen will actually return. Guess they didn’t finish her off after all!

So, are we to understand that it will be the Huntsman battling the evil queen, but without dwarves and Snow White getting in the way? Surely, there will be much more to this story than that.

We’ve also heard that Emily Blunt is in negotiations to join the film as a second villain. It is a sequel and, as sequels do, you up the ante. And given all the subtractions that are going on with the sequel, additions are absolutely welcome!

And we have a release date… look for The Huntsman (as it’s being called currently) to land in theaters April 22, 2016.

Will it be an unnecessary sequel? The following in the slideshow below sure are!

Literally hundreds of millions of people across the globe are getting ready for the big game, aka the Super Bowl, and that includes the littlest of yellow creatures.

We know them better as the Minions and in an effort to drum up even more interest than the explosive fascination that already exists for the Minions solo movie, we’ve got a “Super Fans” spot that shows the adorable evil helpers as excited for a great football game as the rest of us.

As teased in that Minions trailer, this is a true origins story for those characters that were our favorite part of the two Despicable Me movies.

Their history is traced to the dawn of time in their timeless search to attach themselves to the evilest of the evil.

From T. Rex to the woman they meet in '60s New York City, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), this is the story of how the Minions became the best support group for anyone seeking to extol evil.

Look for Minions on July 10. Watch Despicable Me 2 online and see where we last left them!

The Book of Life DVD Review: Guillermo del Toro Produces a Beauty

$
0

One of the more beautiful animated movies you will ever witness was also one of our top 9 animated movies of 2014, The Book of Life. The film from director Jorge R. Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro may be rooted in telling a story centered around the Day of the Dead, but it has romance, a fantastic score and so much more. This is one for the collection now that The Book of Life has landed on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

The Book of Life DVD

The story of three kids, who become lifelong friends that wind up in a love triangle that has the very fate of the undead world hanging in the balance, will surely charm audiences of all ages.

Follow Manola (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana) and Chuy (Channing Tatum) as they embark on a magical journey that is equally as entertaining as it is enlightening into a culture that many of us think we know, but truthfully barely scratch the surface.

You have never seen animation as eye-popping as in this film, as we stated in our theatrical The Book of Life review. It is fitting because it reflects a colorful story that is so relatable on so many levels. How many of us can commiserate with what these characters go through? They are torn between fulfilling what is expected of them by their families and what their heart is telling them to do in living their dreams. And then, there are all the sacrifices we make for love.

Combining the real life world of a Mexican village with the supernatural landscape of the Day of the Dead, Gutierrez and del Toro have crafted a magical film that will sweep you away and we guarantee that this is one that the kids will want to witness over and over, and the adults won’t mind one bit!

The all-star cast beyond Luna, Saldana and Tatum includes Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Kate del Castillo and Ron Perlman.

We were hoping that this breathtaking film would also have a bevy of bonus features that explores not only the making of the movie, but also the cultural history and resonance that it reflects. And The Book of Life DVD and Blu-Ray extras achieve that and then some.

First, when Maria leaves her two young friends to study in Europe, they give her an adorable little pig named Chuy. He gets many laughs throughout the film, so you can imagine our joy that there is an all-new short film The Adventures of Chuy that gives us more of the little guy!

The Book of Life Star Channing Tatum

The music is another huge selling point in The Book of Life. From original songs and Mariachi-style versions of some pop music classics such as Radiohead’s Creep, the Music Machine and The Music of Life bonus features spotlight the fantastic musical enhancement of an already electrifying film.

The Closer Look At The Book of Life delves deep into the challenging effort to bring The Book of Life to the screen. As we stated, there are not many, if any, films that look like this one and filmmakers were continually pushing themselves to make it even more exquisite than seemed humanly possible.

In that vein, Digital Carpenters: The Art Direction of The Book of Life shows how the production design played a critical role in establishing the feel and look of the film. One might think that it’s easy to just draw a background and go on with the animation process. But as this bonus feature showcases, every millimeter of frame was given hours of thought into texture, color and tone. It is simply superb.

After we spoke to Gutierrez, it was clear that The Book of Life was his baby and had been something he’d dreamed about since he was a child. Therefore, hearing his director’s commentary -- while watching his film -- is a true gift and a lesson to all those young dreamers out there to follow your dreams.

Watch The Book of Life online and share in the magic.

Furious 7 is one of the Super Bowl trailers we want to see and given how they just took to Paul Walker's social media page to release a seven-second teaser, we're guessing it's a sure thing that we'll see the latest Furious 7 trailer during the NFL championship.

The thrills on the field between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks may be the big draw for many, but we could not be more excited for more footage from the James Wan-directed seventh installment of the Fast and Furious franchise.

The seven-second teaser does amazing work in that it shows so much with so little. Let's just say this: Cars get airborne. Like, a lot of cars get airborne!

Ted 2 Trailer Revealed: Fight the Power!

The Ted 2 trailer has premiered and we cannot tell you how excited we are to check back in with Mark Wahlberg and his thunder buddy.

The Super Bowl trailer for the Universal release landed a few days early and it features our first look at the follow-up to those Ted quotes that led to that Seth MacFarlane written, directed and starring as the voice of Ted film, which became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.

As the first teaser shows, Ted is getting married to his girlfriend from the first film. They decide to have a baby and need a sperm donor, clearly. But, the government interjects because they determine that Ted is not a person.

Yup, we knew it... Ted 2 is a civil rights commentary and as anyone who has watched Family Guy over the years knows, when MacFarlane points his sharp humor at the cultural controversies of the day, it is both hilarious and exposes the ridiculously inane opposing views to any controversy.

Ted 2 also features the addition of Amanda Seyfried (as a potential girlfriend for Wahlberg?), Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and as you can see in the trailer above, Sam Jones is back!

Look for Ted 2 in theaters June 26. Until then, watch Ted online.

The “Big Game” trailers continue!

Moments after the Ted 2 trailer debuted, we’ve got a Super Bowl early gift from Paramount -- the Terminator: Genisys Super Bowl trailer!

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, and he’s joined in an all-new cast with Jason Clarke as John Connor, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese and J.K. Simmons, Courtney B. Vance, Matthew Smith, Dayo Okeniji and Byung-Hun Lee in roles we’ll just call “as yet to be determined.”

As we could tell from that first (and much longer) Terminator: Genisys trailer, this is not your parents', honestly, your Terminator.

The timeline has been drastically altered and we’ll have to see how it all plays out when the film lands this July.

This time out, Schwarzenegger’s Terminator has been with Sarah all along and when Reese lands in the past to save her, it’s her who saves him and this entire thing gets turned on its head.

To see how it all got started, watch The Terminator online

Terminator: Genisys also revealed a new poster, check it out and all of our stills in the slideshow below.

The Super Bowl trailers continue! Fresh off the debut of the Ted 2 trailer and the Terminator: Genisys Big Game trailer, we‘ve got the “pre-game” trailer for Insurgent.

The spot is set to air during the pre-game show before the match between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, but we have it now!

Just like that first teaser for the sequel to Divergent, this look is heavy on the visuals, but scarce of any plot points.

Frankly, that is a nice change of pace. We’re tired of trailers giving us too much information from an upcoming film and -- imagine that -- rather go into the theaters and be surprised!

All we can gather is that the visual eye candy is through the roof on this installment, Shailene Woodley’s Tris is “The One” and that Kate Winslet is tightening her grip on power even more than in the first film.

Look for Insurgent in theaters on March 20 with Theo James and Ansel Elgort returning and Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer joining the cast.

Ghostbusters Reboot Potential Plot: Reality TV vs. Science?!

The Ghostbusters casting news has had us all sorts of abuzz for Paul Feig’s reboot of the classic '80s flick. We think Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy reuniting for the first time since Bridesmaids would have us front and center regardless. But, seeing them as Ghostbusters, circa 2016, we think is a stroke of genius.

Kristen Wiig Melissa McCarthy Photo

And now considering what we’re hearing about what the plot for Feig and co-writer Katie Dipold’s update on the horror-comedy hybrid is, this promise of greatness keeps getting greater.

HitFix reported that McCarthy and Wiig will play Erin Gabler and Abby Bergman. Oh, and if you just don’t want to know anything about the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot, just check out our Ghostbusters quotes for some fun with the classic!

The story is that the two co-wrote a non-fiction book about the paranormal and then something happened that had them going separate ways. Erin has gone the university route and Abby has made a name for herself in the reality TV world on one of the many ghost hunter shows.

They each have new partners, thus our supporting players Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Something clearly will happen where the city of New York will come under serious supernatural trouble and the quartet will have to find a way to work together and rid their beloved city of the demons who threaten to destroy it.

Consider. Us. Sold.

Toss in the fact that Feig is trying to convince original Ghostbuster Bill Murray to play a character named Martin Heiss, a man who lives to make the masses see that the supernatural is nothing but silly hogwash -- and we believe you have a winner.

Watch Ghostbusters online and see how it all got started as we wait for Feig’s Ghostbusters to land July 26, 2016.

We don’t know what role exactly Aquaman will play in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but we have a feeling it will be not too much more than an introductory situation that sets up his role in Justice League Part 1 and Part 2, as well as that solo Aquaman movie.

Momoa was talking to the Daily Beast and his excitement for playing the aquatic superhero goes beyond simply an actor’s dream of scoring a role in a franchise. It’s about culture and family.

“Aquaman is especially cool because, being a Kanaka Maoli -- being Hawaiian -- our Gods are Kanaloa and Maui, and the Earth is 71 percent water, so I get to represent that,” Momoa proudly stated.

“And I’m someone who gets to represent all the islanders, not some blond-haired superhero. It’s cool that there’s a brown-skinned superhero.”

As a family man who has kids to raise, he’s excited about the security of being in a superhero franchise with DC and Warner Bros, but as a father, there’s another layer of pride too.

“It’s awesome as an actor to know what your future is going to be because I have children and I’ve busted my ass to put food on the table. It’s awesome knowing that I’m going to be in Justice League because my son is the biggest Batman fan and my daughter loves Wonder Woman,” Momoa said.

“It’ll be cool for them to see me in something because they’re not going to be watching Game of Thrones or Red Road anytime soon, but now they can see Daddy kicking ass in IMAX.”

Look for Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice March 25, 2016 and that Aquaman solo movie landing July 27, 2018. To see where we left off in the DC world, watch Man of Steel online.
