American Sniper DVD Review: Chris Kyle's Powerful Story

American Sniper arrived on screens at the tail end of 2014 and the first part of 2015 and struck a chord with our nation that is rarely seen from a movie coming out of Hollywood. Passionate responses emerged from all corners of the country for the Clint Eastwood-directed story of Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL Iraq War veteran who had recorded more kills than any sniper in U.S. history.

American Sniper DVD

The film went on to become the highest grossing of 2014 and earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the miracle that was the performance of Bradley Cooper.

American Sniper is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, and we have a feeling it is going to be one of those home video releases that breaks sales records across the land because this is the type of film that you want to watch over and over. This is important cinema for a segment of the population that does not always feel that Hollywood gets their likes and dislikes. The Chris Kyle story is about as American of a story as they come, and this home video release is likely to be among the biggest of the year, if not the biggest.

What Cooper did as Kyle was absolutely uncanny. The war hero would be proud with what Cooper achieved by getting inside the man who struggled to keep his comrades safe in battle as much as he grappled with feeling like he was failing them when he was at home with his wife (Sienna Miller) and children. It’s a fascinating character portrait by Cooper and further shows why this young man is developing into one of our finest thespians working today.

Bradley Cooper Sienna Miller American Sniper

American Sniper has become the biggest hit in director Eastwood’s career and it’s clear that this is a subject matter that is close to his heart. Kudos to him, as we stated in our theatrical American Sniper review, for balancing his story with illustrating how our brave soldiers also have brave souls at home who struggle with their absence and how our military could not be as successful and astounding as they are without that homefront help. Again, it’s easy to see why this film has become so resonant and Movie Fanatic has a feeling that those American Sniper quotes will live on for decades and decades.

When it comes to bonus features on the American Sniper DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download there are only a few, but they are as important and as interesting as the movie itself. We particularly adored One Soldier’s Story: The Journey of American Sniper. Eastwood is joined by Cooper and Miller, along with Eastwood’s filmmaking team, and they shed light on the challenges that befell them bringing the Chris Kyle story to life. Not only was it important for them to craft a powerful film, but you get the impression that it was of the utmost importance that this serve as a tribute to Kyle and the hundreds of thousands like him who have served this country so nobly.

The bonus feature The Making of American Sniper is fascinating for many reasons, but the one that stands out is witnessing Eastwood and Cooper working together. Perhaps one of the reasons why Eastwood has not only his most successful film in his career, but one of his finest, is because he had a true collaborator in Cooper. The actor was also a producer on the film, and it is an utter joy to watch him and Eastwood come together to craft a film that tells a riveting story with an emotional punch that will stand the test of time.

Finding Dory: What Will It Be About?

Disney and Pixar head John Lassiter is in Cannes at the iconic film festival and he just premiered Inside Out to glowing reviews. He remained in the south of France city for a few days and delivered some news this morning on what we can expect from one of Pixar’s most anticipated upcoming films, Finding Dory.

Finding Dory Logo

The film will not be a prequel, as once thought. Instead, the action picks up merely months after the events of Finding Nemo. Dory discovers something that will launch her on her own journey in search of her parents -- migration instincts. Nemo and Marlin will join her in the search for her parents (voiced by Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton).

Along the way they will meet a Whale Shark named Destiny who is a little confused about who she is: she’s a shark, but “she thinks she’s a whale,” Lassiter said.

Back for a second go-around will be Willem Dafoe’s Gil and Vicki Lewis’ Deb/Flo.

Andrew Stanton will return to the director duties for the sequel to his first film. Look for Finding Dory to hit theaters June 16, 2016. Until then, watch Finding Nemo online

The first trailer for the Zac Efron-starring We Are Your Friends has dropped and color us intrigued. Efron has been on quite a roll of late, what with his fantastic Neighbors quotes, and the thought of him playing a DJ trying to make a name for himself in Los Angeles has potential written all over it.

We Are Your Friends is set in the world of electronic music and features Efron’s DJ Cole making his way from party to party with his friends, believing that they are on the path to their dream life. When Cole’s talent starts to attract attention, their friendship is challenged. But Cole has that special something and there is no holding him back.

Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl) also stars, along with Wes Bentley in the film that hits theaters August 28.

One of the other highlights of this film for us is that Randall Poster is serving as the movie’s music supervisor after his stellar work on The Wolf of Wall Street and Spring Breakers.

Tomorrowland: George Clooney Raps About the Future

When it came to starring in Disney’s Tomorrowland, star George Clooney was shocked he was even asked. “Putting me in a summer movie is a very bold thought,” Clooney told Movie Fanatic and laughed.

George Clooney Tomorrowland Photo

Then, ever the statesman who has a way with words, he put Tomorrowland and his presence in the Brad Bird (Mission Impossible: Ghost ProtocolThe Incredibles) film into perspective.

“First and foremost, I think it is a really bold thing for Disney to be willing to do a film that isn’t a sequel and isn’t a comic book, to really invest in a summer film of this sort of ilk.”

Clooney read the screenplay and was a little taken aback at the character he would portray. Guess he doesn’t see himself as “mature” as his age would suggest! “When Damon (Lindelof, screenwriter) and Brad (Bird, director) showed up at my house, they said, ‘We’ve got a part that we’ve written for you.’ And then I opened up the description of the character and it’s a 55-year-old has-been. I’m kind of going, ‘Hang on a minute, which part am I reading for?' It said former genius, boy genius, who has gotten bitter in his old age,” Clooney said and smiled.

As the Tomorrowland trailer teases, this is a story of a planet in a state much like the real Earth is in right now. Global warming is sending weather patterns into chaos while one part of the world is morbidly obese and another is starving. Clooney, ever the champion of those less fortunate, dove at the chance to be part of such a fun movie, that still manages to bring a message.

“I just loved the idea of, we live in a world right now where you turn on your television set and it’s rough out there. It’s not fun. It can really wear on you after a period of time. We see generations now feeling as if it’s sort of hopeless, and what I love about it is it speaks to the idea that your future is not preordained and predestined,” Clooney said.

“If you’re involved, a single voice can make a difference and I believe in that. I loved the theme or the idea that, there’s still so much that we can all do to make things better.”

Tomorrowland George Clooney Still Photo

Clooney went on to say that he is an optimist and that he believes from what he’s seen in his life, that people are capable of great change.

“We had the Civil Rights Movement and we had Vietnam. And we had the Women’s Rights Movements and all those things that you felt you could actually have some part of changing. And actually, if you look at the things that changed in the 1960s and early 1970s, individual voices did make a huge difference,” Clooney said.

“And so what I loved about the film was that it reminds you that young people, they’re not born and start out their lives cynical, or angry, or bigoted. You have to be taught all of those things. And I watch the world now and think I see really good signs from young people out there. I really related to the film because I thought [that] Brad and Damon want to tell a story that’s entertainment, but it is hopeful, and I’ve always felt that way myself.”

Clooney is notorious for being a prankster on his movie sets. But, this time out with so much on the line and such a complicated shoot for Tomorrowland, the superstar kept his prank card in his wallet. But, we did hear that to lighten the mood between shots he busted out his inner hip hop star.

“Many of the great rappers today have fashioned their stylings from me,” Clooney said and laughed. Yup, he rapped to keep the cast and crew entertained!

“I grew up when the Sugar Hill Gang hit the scene. It’s funny because I’m literally at the actual oldest age of anybody who knows those songs, but I do still sing them every once in a while, to entertain the troops when they think, ‘Gosh, we’re in the water. It’s cold. We’re shooting 14 hours. We’ve been out all night. It’s terrible. What could be worse?’ And then I rap.”

The people who brought us Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run are back with Shaun the Sheep Movie. Aardman Animation has debuted its latest Shaun the Sheep Movie trailer and it tells us more of the story of Shaun and his herd of sheep and how the desire to take a day off leads them on an adventure that is way more than they bargained for.

If the flock is ever to get their home life back again, they’ll have to venture to Londontown and find their owner and help bring him back.

Shaun the Sheep Movie introduces two new Aardman Animation characters; our favorite has to be the animal control officer named Trumper who is quick with his rod of iron, and Slip, an orphan dog who helps Shaun find his way home.

Fresh off that Pixels trailer that premiered yesterday, Sony has released the first clip from the highly anticipated summer film.

It also just happens to be extremely timely! It’s Pac-Man’s 35th anniversary!

Pixels follows what happens if aliens misinterpreted a signal we sent out during the '80s that introduced us to the universe with a series of images and videos, including some shots of our favorite video games at the time including Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede.

The aliens see those games as a threat and decide to mold their invasion after those games. And sure enough, in 2015 we get invaded… by our favorite classic games, including Pac-Man.

In the below clip, the inventor of Pac-Man, Professor Iwatani, feels that he can reason with his creation and tries to do just that. Wonder how that is going to go?

Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad star as '80s video game experts who are our last hope at winning the war against our alien invaders. Look for Pixels in theaters July 24.

Jurassic World Behind the Scenes: Chris Pratt Asks You to “Kick Me in the Nuts”

If you have followed Chris Pratt’s career, from his time on Parks and Rec to his star-making turn in Guardians of the Galaxy, you know that he can come down on the silly side of things. Proof of that arrives today in a new behind-the-scenes clip from Jurassic World.

That fantastical scene from the Jurassic World trailer where Pratt is riding a motorcycle as raptors run alongside him, we get to see how he filmed it in the below clip. And that trademark wisecracking Pratt humor is on full display. He even dishes how he took a spill on the bike and says that if we ever see him out in the real world on a motorcycle to “kick me in the nuts.” Yes, sir!

Jurassic World picks up 20 years after the events of Jurassic Park. The John Hammond dreamed-of facility has been working brilliantly, seeing 20,000 visitors a day. Pratt's dinosaur wrangler is put to work when scientist Bryce Dallas Howard creates a dinosaur that’s bigger than the T-Rex for a new attraction and it doesn’t quite work out so well.

The fourth Jurassic Park film hits theaters June 12 and also stars Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’Onofrio, Omar Sy and Jake Johnson.

Even though the comedy Spy reunites Melissa McCarthy with her Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig, all anyone can talk about who saw it at SXSW is the scene-stealing performance of Jason Statham.

Well, we have a little taste of that as Fox has released a series of clips from Spy that show off how game Statham is at playing up his screen persona for laughs, while giving Allison Janney and Melissa McCarthy an earful on the finer points of spying.

As the Spy trailer teases, McCarthy is a desk jockey at the CIA who is forced into the field when the agency’s security is compromised and agents' identities are revealed.

You might have heard the story of Batkid, and now thanks to Warner Bros., we get to relive it and go deeper into the tale of Miles and how his one wish set an inspirational fire to the world. The Batkid Begins trailer has landed and just a tip -- you might want to grab a tissue.

Miles was diagnosed with leukemia and all through his treatment he was inspired to fight by his favorite superhero, Batman. So, when it came to his Make-A-Wish request, he wanted to meet the real Batman. What happened next was truly astounding.

Not only did he get to meet a real-life Batman, but he became Batkid, saved San Francisco on one incredible day and, as one narrator in the trailer says, “saved ourselves.”

What is astounding in the above trailer for this documentary that we have to see when it debuts June 26 is how tens of thousands of people turned out in San Francisco to cheer Batkid on in his effort to save the city. Every actor who’s played Batman (including the one who plays him in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) reached out, and even the President of the United States sent a message.

The poster for Batkid Begins also debuted today!

Tomorrowland Review: Disney's Vision Aims High

$
0
0

Tomorrowland may have started out as a dream of Walt Disney's, but the picture that hits screens this week is firmly from the creative minds of director Brad Bird and co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof.

Tomorrowland Britt Robertson Photo

Disney’s Tomorrowland stars George Clooney as Frank, a former boy genius who has grown disenfranchised with a world that seems to be descending into a global warming-heated chaos with dwindling resources and a political structure too set in its ways to allow any kind of change.

We first meet Frank as a kid attending the 1964 World’s Fair. He’s made a jet pack that (almost) works and as he saunters into the Inventors' Pavilion, he approaches judge Nix (Hugh Laurie). Nix sees something in Frank, but given that the jet pack doesn’t quite work, he sends him on his way. But, Nix’s tween acquaintance, Athena (Raffey Cassidy), goes a step further and gives Frank a “T” Tomorrowland pin that allows him to venture into a world that seems ripe with endless possibilities.

Without giving away too much in our Tomorrowland review, let’s just say that Tomorrowland is a place where scientists and other great thinkers are free from political restraints to accomplish great things that will improve life for the masses. Through a series of events, Frank is exiled and we meet him again played by Clooney as a disgruntled (older) man.

Meanwhile, Britt Robertson's Casey is living in Florida in the shadow of NASA’s greatness (her father -- played by Tim McGraw -- is an engineer there). We sense that she has more to offer the world than the boring riff-raff of high school and she too is given a Tomorrowland pin by Athena which eventually leads her to Clooney.

George Clooney Britt Robertson Tomorrowland

Bird, after the success of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, certainly knows how to build a suspenseful, thrill ride of a film. His background as an animated director with The Incredibles and Up firmly has him comfortable in the fantastical world that makes this a pure Disney family film. After his work on Lost, Lindelof is quite adept at creating worlds that keep you guessing around every corner which always leaves you with asking more questions than getting answers to previous ones.

What they have done with Tomorrowland is create a world that spurs plenty of inquiry and gives the audience loads to think about in terms of our real world problems. Yet it does not fully live up to its promise.

The final act of the film seems to work more as a landscape for Frank to deliver a monologue that reminds us of Clooney stepping in front of the UN. That’s not a bad thing -- they are all points that the world needs to hear. It is just that Tomorrowland is full of high-tech wizardry and loads of science fiction, jaw-dropping eye candy which in the end left us feeling a bit empty, where going in we had the highest hopes of exiting the theater moved and in awe.

Terminator Genisys TV Trailer: We’re Here to Stop the End of the World

The latest TV trailer for Terminator: Genisys is here and this teaser is something special. Usually studios don’t show off too much fresh footage in a TV trailer, but this latest one for Terminator: Genisys is chock full of it!

First, we get our first look at the JK Simmons (recent Oscar winner for Whiplash) character. We also get a fantastic scene where Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator are being held in a police station. Knowing Arnie’s history with police stations and his Terminator character, we can’t wait to see how that scene works out!

Although he looks nothing like Jason Clarke, we hear his voice in one of the Terminators going after Sarah and Schwarzenegger’s Terminator in a scene in the above teaser as well. Clarke is playing John Connor, but we think his “role” as a T-3000 is something of a visual trick. Time will tell!

Terminator: Genisys also stars Matthew Smith, Courtney B. Vance and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese.

Watch The Terminator online to see how this world got started, and get ready for Terminator: Genisys in theaters July 1.

Poltergeist Review: Terror in Suburbia

$

As one who absolutely cherishes his memory of witnessing the first Poltergeist in theaters, it was with great pause that we headed into the theater to witness the remake from director Gil Kenan. But, you can imagine our surprise as the lights went dark and the screen lit up with the images of a family grappling with the presence of a poltergeist in their home, that we actually found ourselves getting sucked into the terrifying tale anew.

Poltergeist Kennedi Clements Still

That speaks volumes about the idea first hatched by Steven Spielberg in the early '80s. Poltergeist is a family story. They come together to face the most unthinkable of challenges when their youngest daughter is taken from them by spirits who simply want to get to the other side. Its universal themes are equally as resonant decades later. And like so many stage plays that get reproduced dozens and dozens of times over the years, why can't the same rules apply to cinema? If done right, we argue certain stories can stand the test of time and be remade.

Sam Rockwell (Seven Psychopaths) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Kill the Messenger) star as parents of three children -- a teenager Kendra (Saxon Sharbino), a young boy Griffin (Kyle Catlett) and a little girl Mattie (Kennedi Clements). Economic circumstances have forced them to move into a home in a development that has weathered the foreclosure storm and is only starting to come back.

Strange happenings start almost immediately. Mattie and Griffin notice it first. The fact that Griffin is scared of just about everything does not help matters. But, what is fascinating is that Kenan and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire have made Poltergeist 2015 Griffin’s story and it is through his eyes (mostly) that this story evolves.

Poltergeist Cast

Many of the terrors from the original film that still haunt our dreams are present in this film. Whereas the first film had the one doll that terrorized the little boy, this time we have several (as teased in the Poltergeist trailer). The tree still does its thing! But, there is enough originality tossed in to put this remake in the surprisingly warranted department.

Poltergeist grabbed us from the early moments and did not let us go until the thrilling conclusion. And might we say, something that is improved on the original is the ending. Where the first film found parents Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams enduring one more night of horrors after we thought things were over, this time out, it is much more fluid and therefore even more frightening.

Our Poltergeist review also has to point out that Jared Harris shines as Carrigan Burke, the supernatural expert who comes to make the family’s house “clean.” Whereas in the first film, the character was a short, stocky woman, this time out Harris’ ghostbuster is a larger-than-life reality TV star who seems truly humbled by what appears to be his biggest career challenge.

And then there’s Catlett. What a face. What a talent! Look out for this kid, he gives Poltergeist its heart, soul and, yes, even its chills.

Jeremy Renner took to his social media pages to let the world know he is on the set of Captain America: Civil War and ready for action. What else is fascinating is not only is this just a cool shot from the man who is Hawkeye, but he has given us our first look at the logo for the sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Captain America Civil War Jeremy Renner Set Photo

“On set. Behind the scene. #civilwar #captainamerica #hawkeye this set is amazing!” Renner said with his post announcing his arrival on the Atlanta set of the film that serves as the fifth time we’ll see Chris Evans in the all-American superhero suit.

Marvel announced the Captain America: Civil War cast, and we know that this is going to be one film that is chock full of some of our favorite Avengers -- from Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. And let’s not forget that recently posted photo from Sebastian Stan, who’s back as Bucky Barnes!

Despite all the Avengers in this picture, we’re thrilled with the presence of the Winter Soldier and the fact that it means that Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Cap will continue their search for Steve Roger’s old World War II buddy.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters May 6, 2016 and also will feature the first time we’ve seen Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther!

Reese Witherspoon to Play Tinkerbell in Live Action Peter Pan Spin-Off

After the debut of the Pan trailer earlier this week and the arrival of some more news from Neverland today, one might think that there’s a Peter Pan revival going on! Word is that Reese Witherspoon has signed to produce and star in Tink, a live action flick set to follow the punchy fairy from the legendary Peter Pan story.

Reese Witherspoon in This Means War

We think the casting is impeccable. I mean, just look at the star who was recently seen in Hot Pursuit!

Tink has actually been in the works for about five years over at Disney with Elizabeth Banks initially set to play the fairy. After the success of other live action projects for Disney -- from Maleficent to Cinderella -- interest has intensified and thus why we think we have the casting news today and word that production should start next year.

Tinkerbell Photo

Tink is planned to be a comedy and no word as of yet if Tinkerbell’s dear friend Peter Pan will make an appearance. Finding Dory screenwriter Victoria Strouse has been tapped to churn out the screenplay.

Tinkerbell first appeared in author J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan in the early days of the 20th century and has over the last 100 years become a fan favorite. Disney has even had quite a bit of success with a solo Tinkerbell direct-to-DVD series of films.

Now You See Me 3 Is Happening: Now You See Me 2 Due in 2016

Now You See Me 2 is currently filming with Daniel Radcliffe joining the cast of magicians who make off like bandits. What’s fascinating is it appears that Lionsgate thinks they have a full-on franchise on their hands as Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer admitted that they’re already planning Now You See Me 3.

Now You See Me 2 Cast

“We’ve already begun early planning for Now You See Me 3,” Feltheimer said in a conference call. He also said he expects Now You See Me 2 to bank more than the first film did in 2013. That’s $350 million to you and me!

Hey, that kind of cash would have anyone thinking about the word “franchise.” But, after the close of the Twilight Saga and now with The Hunger Games set to take a bow at the end of 2015, you can forgive Lionsgate for looking to their next film series.

In fact, Now You See Me was not only a surprise hit with audiences, but it was a total joy to watch as a critic. The film that starred Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco as the Four Horsemen had audiences doing the rare thing -- cheering for the “bad guys.” In this case, we prefer to think of them in the Robin Hood vein. After all, they did shower cash on their audiences more than once!

With the news of the third Now You See Me movie, hopefully that means that Fisher will be able to return to the role she could not take part in with the second film, due to her pregnancy. Lizzy Caplan stepped in to “take her place” in a different part, with Jon M. Chu directing the sequel that is set to hit theaters June 10, 2016.

Stay tuned on more from Now You See Me 3 and until then, see what all the fuss is about and watch Now You See Me online.

Weekend Movie Preview: May 22, 2015

Happy Memorial Day weekend! The "official" start of the summer season has brought two new films to cinemas including George Clooney looking to the future in Disney's Tomorrowland and a Steven Spielberg classic getting a remake with Poltergeist

Tomorrowland: Clooney stars as a former boy genius who has seen the future and desperately wants to get back to the fantastical place where dreams of a better world are within one's reach. Brad Bird (The IncrediblesMission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) directs a screenplay co-written by Lost's Damon Lindelof that is loosely based on the dreams of the future by Walt Disney himself. Britt Robertson stars as a teenage girl who shares a youthful hope of the future as Clooney once did, and when she is given a magical pin with the logo for Tomorrowland on it, their fates will be intertwined.

As our Tomorrowland review pointed out, the film is fantastic to look at and is a marvel of science fiction and wonder. But it seems to raise more questions than it answers and in the end, feels a bit preachy. Although we agree with its message, a tale this wide in terms of scope probably would have been better served to try a little subtlety.

Poltergeist: Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt take over the roles that Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams made famous in the early '80s Poltergeist from Spielberg. Initially Movie Fanatic thought this film would go down as another unnecessary remake. But, we actually found the scares enticing and the tale just as resonant as it was decades ago.

Our Poltergeist review goes into more detail, but let's just say this: Sometimes you can get surprised by the most unlikely of films and this horror flick is certainly surprising.

Feel like staying in this weekend? The number one movie of 2014 arrived on digital download this week. Watch American Sniper online and prepare to be moved.

World War Z was the weirdest of surprise hits. It had “troubles” during filming that had many thinking it spelled trouble when the Brad Pitt-starring film hit theaters. Yet, it also had the Max Brooks blockbuster book’s legion of fans eagerly awaiting its arrival. When it landed in cinemas, it turned into the biggest blockbuster of Brad Pitt’s career.

World War Z 2 was announced in 2013, but other than that reveal, no forward movement has been seen on the Pitt-starring sequel. Marc Forster, director of the first film, and Pitt had notoriously clashed and therefore we did know that Forster would not return for the follow-up.

Today, we have learned that Paramount has given World War Z 2 a release date of June 9, 2017 and director Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine, Nanny McPhee) has been tapped to helm the sequel.
