Mark Wahlberg’s latest action thriller, Contraband, landed at the top of the box office charts with solid reviews. Not only did the film become Wahlberg’s latest number one flick, but it also contained quite a few memorable lines that we could all be quoting in the weeks to come.

Contraband Stars Mark Wahlberg as Chris Farraday
Wahlberg stars as Chris Farraday, a family man who walked away from the smuggling life long ago. When his brother-in-law gets into trouble, he has to swing back into action to avoid Giovanni Ribisi’s Tim Briggs from sending his family to the grave.

Movie Fanatic has compiled the best of the Contraband quotes to enlighten your day.

An Oscar contender and a Twilight star’s breakout role come home on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, along with a few films that had limited theatrical release and hope to find an audience on home video. George Clooney’s The Ides of March is the week’s best bet. But, Abduction, Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star and Dirty Girl should each find their niche now that they’re out on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Ides of March: George Clooney’s directorial triumph comes home on DVD and Blu-Ray, allowing millions more to have a chance to see it. That should only help its Oscar chances. Nominated for a slew of Golden Globe Awards and now BAFTAs, Clooney’s masterwork is as good on the small screen as it is on the big screen. Clooney plays a flawed Pennsylvania governor who appears to be a lock for the Democratic nomination for president. Ryan Gosling steals the movie as his aid who has more passion for what’s right than is the norm in national politics and it comes back to hurt him. Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti and Jeffrey Wright co-star in a movie that makes politics thrilling.

The Ides of March Blu-Ray
Abduction: Taylor Lautner busts out of his Twilight-Jacob mode as a teen that discovers his face on a missing person’s site. When he identifies himself to the website, all hell breaks loose, including the deaths of who he perceives to be his parents. It is not the greatest thriller ever made, but teens who adore Lautner will enjoy the ride. Sigourney Weaver, Lily Collins and Alfred Molina co-star.

Abduction Blu-Ray
Dirty Girl: A charming coming-of-age flick that features a star-making turn for its lead, Juno Temple. Filmmaker Abe Sylvia has taken a real-life experience from his youth in Oklahoma and brought it to life onscreen with just the right amount of heart. The film takes place in 1987 and features a fantastic soundtrack of that era’s biggest hits. Dirty Girl only saw a limited theatrical release and should find its audience with the release on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Dirty Girl Blu-Ray
Bucky Larson Born to be a Star: Nick Swardson stars as a Midwestern twenty-something who, on one fateful night, learns that his parents were porn stars in the 1970s. Finally feeling his life has meaning, he heads to Los Angeles to follow in their famous footsteps. The film is from Adam Sandler and features a cast of his regulars, including Norm MacDonald. We thought it was funny, some did not… but you can judge for yourself now that it’s out on home video.

Bucky Larson Born to be a Star Blu-Ray
Killing Bono: The film is based on the real-life story of what happened when two brothers decided to form their own band while their good chums created U2. A cute little film that also will find a wider audience on Blu-Ray and DVD.

This Is Forty: New Still, Plot Details on Knocked Up Spin-Off

Judd Apatow announced previously that he was doing a spin-off of Knocked Up for his latest project. How one does that was answered when Movie Fanatic got its hands on This Is Forty's new plot details and our first still of Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, who reprise their roles from the first film.

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd in This is Forty
This Is Forty arrives in theaters December 21 and brings back Pete (Rudd) and Debbie (Mann) as the film focuses on the challenges of their marriage as their kids are growing up. Apatow cast his real life daughters (photo above) in the flick, Maude and Iris, as they join Megan Fox who is an employee of Mann’s vanity business. Melissa McCarthy, Albert Brooks and John Lithgow also star in as-yet-undefined roles.

Mann spoke to the LA Times, telling the paper that This Is Forty is “the kind of stuff about marriage that you don’t get to see in movies.”

From the sound of it, Apatow is growing up a bit. “It’s about getting older,” Mann said. “What the hell happened? Am I making all the right choices? Is this where I’m supposed to be? Is this it? All of those dreams that you had when you were young, all of the possibilities, when you lock into marriage and kids, do the possibilities dwindle or go away?”

Gina Carano: Haywire's Livewire Talks

Steven Soderbergh saw something in Gina Carano and immediately created a movie around her. That film is Haywire and it lands in theaters January 20. Carano is a gifted Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter who rarely loses. Unfortunately, she lost her last fight, but it proved fateful because it meant she was free to take that call from Soderbergh. Carano sat down with Movie Fanatic to dish appearing in Haywire, how the film came about and her thoughts on how Hollywood action movies rate when they portray fighting. She also surprises us by letting us know what some of her favorite films are… Pride and Prejudice? You bet!

Haywire Star Gina Carano Pic
Haywire follows Carano’s character, a highly trained spy, who is betrayed by those who employ her (the cast includes Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum… who is the backstabber?!). Carano’s character crosses the globe in order to find the truth and make right what is so wrong and in the process announces to the world that we have a new action hero in Hollywood.

Movie Fanatic: Were you familiar with Steven’s work and how did the part in Haywire come about?

Gina Carano: I didn’t know who he was [laughs]. I don’t know much about Hollywood really. I’m still learning. I knew he did Traffic and that was a movie that really touched me. So I decided to pick him up at the train station in San Diego. We had a four hour lunch and at the end of it he offered me a movie. There was no auditioning. I don’t know what that is like yet.

Movie Fanatic: Was training for this role as a spy who gets double-crossed any different than training for a bout?

Gina Carano: It was very different [laughs]. They had me getting up at 5 a.m. Then I did three hours of stunts and three hours of Mossad secret service training with guns -- pretty much boot camp and getting yelled at and getting stomped and stomping other people. After that I did strength and conditioning. There wasn’t any acting training until probably the week before. I had the script with me and I had so much anxiety about it. I was like, "I don’t know what to do with this damn thing." Finally a week before, they were like, "Let’s try reading some lines with an acting coach."

Movie Fanatic: Did you have any action heroines that you looked up to like Sigourney Weaver in Aliens or Linda Hamilton in the Terminator movies?

Gina Carano: They are good at acting. I respect that about these women. Everybody has been trying to compare me to them. But I don’t want that comparison. They are gorgeous. They can do anything they want, but they still do these kinds of roles. I think that’s a beautiful thing. What I’m bringing to it is whatever I can to fight with my own flavor and my own personality.

Movie Fanatic: What films are your favorite from when you were growing up?

Gina Carano: I didn’t really watch action films. It’s funny. I grew up on Anne of Green Gables and the earlier Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. Then I dated somebody who was a big fan of Bruce Lee. I don’t really have somebody I was looking at to mimic and I didn’t have somebody I was looking to mimic in fighting either.

Movie Fanatic: This film was the next thing you did after your last fight. Will you get in the ring again?

Gina Carano: I think I’ll get on the other side of this and land and figure that out. I haven’t ruled it out to be honest.

Movie Fanatic: What’s next for Gina Carano… perhaps Wonder Woman? I could totally see you as her. Take note, Hollywood!

Gina Carano: To be very honest, I think a lot of people have been waiting for this to come out and to see how it does and my performance. It’s not the easiest role to break into but we have ideas and we have scripts and we have people that do want to work but it’s not the easiest thing to get a film made. And as far as Haywire 2, that’s all up to Soderbergh and I think everyone’s just waiting for this film to come out. Regardless, I’m really excited to get on the other side of it and just land somewhere.

Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender in Haywire

Movie Fanatic: We spoke to Michael Fassbender for A Dangerous Method and he told us that you put him in a nasty headlock that made him pass out. But, he seemed really game for the action. How was working with him?

Gina Carano: I’ll tell you this: he had no problem slamming me into anything [laughs]. Soderbergh told him once, “We need to get this shot better when you slam her head into the wall.” I was like, “Damn, this thing is not soft.” But Soderbergh was behind the camera and he was being real mischievous, like he wanted something bad to happen. I slammed a vase in his face. I was supposed to throw the vase past him just for that take because we wanted to get my head slammed against the wall. We were going for it and he slammed my head so hard against the wall that I lost it for a second. I slammed the vase right into Fassbender’s face, but he said he could see it coming because he saw a flash in my eyes. Right after that I thought, “Oh, I’m going to lose my job.”

Top 10 Steven Soderbergh Movies: The Director's Best

$
0
0

Steven Soderbergh is most likely barely a third of the way through his esteemed career. His latest film, Haywire starring Gina Carano, lands in theaters January 20 and is the first true action film in the Oscar winner’s career. What better time to look back at his esteemed body of work that spans over two decades and give you Movie Fanatic’s Top 10 Films of Steven Soderbergh?

10. The Limey
Terrance Stamp stars as an Irishman who heads to Los Angeles with one purpose: To avenge the murder of his daughter. Peter Fonda plays the record executive who Stamp believes murdered (or at least accidentally killed) his child. And Stamp's character's sole mission is to destroy the man who took his daughter’s life. Stamp shines and Fonda is riveting in what also is a mystery as the audience is not so sure that Fonda is guilty. Watch The Limey and decide for yourself!

9. The Good German
George Clooney stars in the 2006 drama that also features Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire. Clooney’s in post-World War II Berlin and his journalist character is drawn into a murder investigation. A powerful film shot in black and white that shows off Soderbergh’s talents as a filmmaker, regardless of color and subject matter.

George Clooney in The Good German
8. Haywire
Soderbergh’s first true action movie explodes and introduces the world to the powerhouse that is Gina Carano. Her character is a spy who has been double-crossed and put within an inch of her life. Possessing a masterful soundtrack, killer action sequences and an all-star cast including Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender, when Haywire arrives January 20, don’t miss it.

7. Sex, Lies and Videotape
One of Soderbergh’s first films is the one that put him on the map. Sex, Lies and Videotape is often imitated and rarely duplicated. The film features one of the best performances by Andie MacDowell and James Spader in their careers.

6. Contagion
The tagline for Contagion says it all: Nothing spreads like fear. An international epidemic threatens the human race’s entire existence and in the hands of Soderbergh a virus movie has never felt so thrilling. Again, the master director gets an all-star cast including Jude Law, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Laurence Fishburne.

5. The Informant
Frequent collaborator Matt Damon stars in Soderbergh’s hilarious film about corporate espionage. You know, it seems the filmmaker can tackle any subject matter in any genre and put his unique stamp on it. The Informant proves that in droves. Not that many have seen the film and for movie fans in general, this is one to put in the Netflix queue.

4. Out of Sight
Sexy and thrilling, Soderbergh once again gets the performance of a lifetime out of one of his stars. Jennifer Lopez has never been better on screen and she smolders with her co-star George Clooney in the story of a group of ex-cons and their efforts to finish a job that could put them all in the catbird seat. Come to think of it, Dennis Farina, as Lopez’s father, has never been better than he was in Out of Sight. There again, actors elevate to the master’s cinematic brilliance.

3. Oceans 11
Many wondered why Soderbergh would remake the 1960s classic that starred the Rat Pack. History has shown that Oceans 11 would wind up one of the director’s best, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac and Elliot Gould. What Soderbergh and his cast pulled off was one heck of a heist that goes down as one of the best heist movies of all time. Slick, thrilling and, in many ways, powerful, Oceans 11 is one masterful piece of work.

2. Erin Brockovich
The final two films in our Soderbergh top 10 had Oscar honor them as they went down in history as one of the medium's best. The first, Erin Brockovich, gave Julia Roberts her first Academy Award. The film is a powerful and endearing story of a single mother who unearthed one of the biggest health scandals to rock Southern California in the last 30 years. In the hands of Soderbergh, what could have been a film mired in legal jargon was both a thriller and heartwarming tale of what one person can do, despite all the odds stacked against them.

Benicio del Toro in Traffic
1. Traffic
Winner of three Academy Awards -- including one for Soderbergh for directing -- and nominated for Best Picture, Traffic is an ensemble piece of the highest order with a helmer working firmly in his wheelhouse. It is as relevant today as it was in 2000 when it arrived and painted a picture of the drug war gone wrong. An absolutely stunning piece of filmmaking that gets better every time you watch it.

Hunger Games Picture: Katniss All Dolled Up

Jennifer Lawrence and her co-star Josh Hutcherson are looking wild in a new picture from The Hunger Games that appeared in Entertainment Weekly. The duo, who play Katniss and Peeta, are looking quite serious in the latest still from one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2012. Note that this is also one of our first looks at Lenny Kravitz as Cinna (far right).

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Lenny Kravitz in The Hunger Games
Director Gary Ross talked to the magazine about what Cinna is doing in the above still and Katniss and Peeta's outfits. “What Cinna was trying to do wsa create something that came out of District 12, out of a coal mining world, with a fresh bold look to it,” Ross said. “So Judianna (costume designer) went to this wonderful black reflective material that glistened like coal or graphite and would obviously work well in the Tribute parade where Katniss becomes the Girl on Fire.”

Could we get any more excited for The Hunger Games?

Could Twilight Saga Continue After Breaking Dawn?

After Lionsgate acquired Summit Entertainment last week, the studio’s president, Jon Feltheimer, looked at Summit’s film library and thought one thing:

Why does the Twilight Saga have to end when Breaking Dawn Part 2 lands in theaters November 16?

When a franchise makes $700 million with each go-around, it seems silly to stop making them just because the book series that they’re based on has completed. Sound crazy? Felthemier doesn’t think so.

Bella Swan Photo
“It’s hard for me to imagine a movie that does $700 million-plus doesn’t have ongoing value,” he said. “It’s an amazing franchise that they have done a great job of maintaining with absolutely no deterioration. So the simple answer is, ‘Boy I hope so.’”

With those words, millions of Twilight fans began to drool. There are dozens of storylines that could be explored in the saga, not the least of which is the wolf pack and maybe even Renesme (Edward and Bella’s baby) as a grown vampire-human hybrid. Who knows?

“Maybe go back into some of the back stories,” Feltheimer suggested. “There’s been talk of shorts and different new media, too.”

So, what do you think? Would you want more Twilight?

Most superhero movies get a chance at a sequel and news has arrived today that Hancock will be no different. Director Peter Berg and star Will Smith have admitted that they are in the midst of brainstorming ideas for a sequel to the 2008 hit.

Immortal Gods
Berg spoke about his and Smith’s thoughts for a sequel recently and it looks like it will be a go, sooner than later.

“We're all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time,” Berg told Comic Book Movie. “We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel -- and Will Smith actually had the idea -- so I think it will happen. Johnny Depp Tops Poll as America's Favorite Movie Actor

With his box office success, topping a poll as America’s favorite actor should not be a surprise for Johnny Depp. After having interviewed him several times in locales across the world and knowing how humble he is, Movie Fanatic is sure he is taking the news in stride.

Johnny Depp stars in The Rum Diary
Harris conducted the poll, one they’ve done since 1994, where they ask thousands of Americans who their favorite performers are, male or female, and Depp has landed on top for 2012. After his stellar year in 2011 with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Rango and The Rum Diary, looks like we can’t get enough of the former 21 Jump Street upstart.

Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood tied for second place, even though Eastwood did not act in a film in 2011, although he did direct J. Edgar. Next on the list is Tom Hanks, who continually lands in the top 10.

The big surprise in this year’s poll is the man who has been on the list since it debuted in 1994… John Wayne. Yes, he hasn’t appeared in a film in decades, but his presence here speaks volumes as to The Duke’s enduring legacy.

We’ll give our Movie Fanatic readers the same list of actors, and let us know: Who is your favorite movie actor?

The release date for The Hunger Games must be getting close as Lionsgate has released what they say is the final poster for the film. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is front and center on the new one sheet for the film based on Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster book trilogy.

The Hunger Games Final Poster
The Hunger Games poster contains the tagline, “The world will be watching.” Although it refers to the storyline in the film, it easily could serve as a double meaning for the sentiment towards the film itself. The movie is one of the most anticipated of 2012 and to say “The world will be watching” is an understatement.

March 23 is when audiences will finally get to see the flick that stars Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Donald Sutherland.
