Battle: Los Angeles Movie Review: Lots of explosions, Little Plot Development

0
0

Battle: Los Angeles is full of intense action that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  It has as much fire and explosions as you could ask for, but little plot development.  Filmmakers had to choose between making a film full of action where there was little room for any drama and plot, or a film full of drama with less action - director Jonathan Liebesman chose action.

Looking for Alients

The Plot:

Many meteors are heading toward earth - not just anywhere, some of the biggest cities across the globe, including London, Rio de Janeiro and, of course, Los Angeles.  But it's not  just the  regular kind of meteors threatening to destroy these cities - it's much worse.  The "meteors" are actually aliens heading to earth to take over, starting with the metropolis centers.

It's up the Marines to save the city of Los Angeles from being completely overpowered by the aliens.  But these martians are strong and put up quite the fight.  It's hard to tell who wins - I have my opinion, but I don't want to give too much away.

Total Destruction

Aaron Eckhart plays Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz, who is on the brink of retirement after losing some soldiers on his last deployment.  In the "all hands on deck" mission, he is forced back out to the battle ground, and in front of the men who blame him for their fellow soldier's deaths.

The Good:

The film displays incredible special effects and the sweeping scenes of a destroyed and smoking Los Angeles are both cinematically magical and devastating at the same time. It's a lot of repetitive action and flame filled explosion, but if that's what you're looking for, you've come to the right place.

Aaron Echhart is Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz

The Bad:

The story tries to leave room for some character and plot development with the Staff Sergeant Nantz subplot and the resentment that follows.  They also start the film with storylines about a couple of the soldiers - one is still a virgin, another is about to get married and planning his wedding with his fiance, we see another leaving his pregnant wife at home and saying he will call her.  These would have made sense and could have been a integral part of the story, if they were ever touched on again.

Saving the Civilians

Battle: Los Angeles seems a little confused about what it's trying to be. Is it an alien sci-fi thriller?  Most of the film is pretty much exactly that.  But there are elements of cheesy horror looking for a cheap scare.  One scene in particular features the soldiers poking and proding a dying alien, trying to figure out how to kill it.  The grotesque images last for much too long.

Michelle Rodriguez in Battle: Los Angeles

Overall, Battle: Los Angeles is more a decoupage of alien horror movies than anything brilliantly original.  If you're looking for an entertaining two hours with a little suspense and a lot of gun shooting soldiers, you'll be satisfied.  Just don't go trying to look for any deeper meaning; there's isn't really one in this movie.  Yeah, we could make some comparisons to immigration or political struggles, but that would really be stretching it.

Mars Needs Moms Review: Cute, But Underdeveloped

0
0

Mars Needs Moms is a surprisingly touching adventure that kids will love.  Even though the story is predictable and doesn't have much depth, it was a fun hour-and-a-half and had some great moments.  It's no so much funny, as it is touching and sweet.

Milo Feed The Cat

Disney has teamed up with producer Robert Zemeckis to create another pseudo robot-faced animated movie where the character looks like a creepy version of the actor voicing it.  Think Polar Express and the Jim Carrey Christmas Carole.

This is what Zemeckis is known for and sometimes it works.  This time - it did!  Seeing as it's a story about aliens, having the humans look a little strange, well just kind of fit.

Milo and Gribble To The Rescue

The Plot:

Milo (Seth Green) is a little boy who thinks his mother nags him all the time - the angst in almost every kids life.  One night, he tells his mom (Joan Cusack) he doesn't need her, then feels bad and goes to apologize, but finds she is missing.  She has been taken by a space ship from Mars.  The Martians are looking for human women in order to take the disciplinarian out of them and use them for their robot caregivers to raise the children martians.

Milo jumps on the spaceship to try to save his mother.  On Mars, he meets an unlikely friend, a man named Gribble (Dan Fogler), who has been there since he was a boy and his mother was taken.  Together they try to save Milo's mother with the help of martian Ki (Elisabeth Harnois).

Choosing the Women

The movie is also a commentary on how kids these days are raised.  The mom's that are chosen are ones that do not fawn over their children or let the kids control their lives - perhaps suggesting that, although taken to the extreme, the Martians might be on to something?

The Good:

Milo is extremely likeable and the film has a great message about parents and their purpose in a kid's life.  Milo learns that he does need his mom and he would be lost without her.  Not because she nags him and makes him do stuff, but because she loves him -- and that's more important.

Making the Dreary Colorful

The martian women have no concept of this and they think child rearing has to do with discipline only.  The martian men are cast aside and sent to live in the landfill because all they want to do is nurture and hug.  It is a great analysis of male/female gender roles and the stereotypes that go with them.  It's not explored in as much depth as it could have been, but it is technically a kid's movie.

The Bad:

Although the film has potential to be top notch, filmmakers don't take it quite to that point.  It is enjoyable, but there is nothing spectacular about it.  It's got a cute message that could have been wrapped into a more exciting and action-filled package.

Concocting The Plan

Although Mars Needs Moms isn't Toy Story, nor is it Disney's best foray into space, it's a good attempt and will keep you entertained.  Bring the kids, and you'll have a good movie-going experience.

Clint Eastwood's Hereafter is being pulled from the rest of its theatrical run in Japan.  The opening scene of the movie features an enormous tsunami rising up and engulfing a resort.

With the real life tsunami hitting Japan and the residents still dealing with the devastating aftermath, Warner Entertainment Japan decided the film was "not appropriate" to show at this point.

Warner Bros. is releasing Hereafter on DVD tomorrow in North America.

We can't blame them for pulling this movie right now - it's seems like the right movie with the country still desperately trying to recover.

Disney Scraps Robert Zemeckis' Yellow Submarine

Mars Needs Moms did so poorly at the box office this weekend, Disney decided to scrap producer Robert Zemeckis' next project for the studio, Yellow Submarine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the high profile remake of the classic Beatles film Yellow Submarine has been in the pipeline for a while, but hasn't really moved forward.

The film has been wracked with problems, including budget issues and a failed attempt to sit down with the Beatles heirs to discuss the project.

Beatles Yellow Submarine

Zemeckis produced the latest Disney flick Mars Needs Moms, which cost the studio $150 million to make, it made a measly $6.9 million at the box office this weekend.

The plan for Yellow Submarine was apparently to use 16 Beatles songs into the film and use the cutting edge motion-capture technology that was used in Zemerckis' films Beowolf, Christmas Carole, and Mars Needs Moms.

Apparently the technology isn't catching on as well as they had expected.  Most people describe the technology as "creepy" or "weird" and the results are reflective of that.
