Darren Aronofsky No Longer Directing The Wolverine

Director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) was all set to direct the upcoming movie The Wolverine for 20th Century Fox.

They have now released a joint statement about the director's involvement in the movie.

Wolverine's claws

"As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of 'The Wolverine' would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time." said Aronofsky. "I am sad that I won't be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again."

20th Century Fox mimicked the sentiments saying,  "While we are of course disappointed that Darren can't do 'The Wolverine,' we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future."

But the show must go on and the statement also promised Hugh Jackman and the studio will continue with plans to make the film.  Now it's time to find a new director.

EXCLUSIVE: An Interview with Win Win Star Alex Shaffer

Win Win is Alex Shaffer's first movie, but you can't tell.  He's as professional as any veteran Hollywood actor and he knows what he wants in life.  Reel Movie News had a chance to sit down with the young wrestler turned actor to talk about his first acting gig - a starring role no less.

Shaffer plays Kyle, a young athlete who ends up at the Flaherty house while down on his luck.  The family takes him in and realizes he is a star athelete, so Mike Flaherty, a wrestling coach, takes the troubled teen under his wing and trains him.

Check out the rest of the interview with Alex below.

Paul Giamatti and Alex Shaffer in Win Win

Tell me a bit about you character.

I play Kyle, he has bleach blonde hair and he’s really just this kind of hard-ass, badass tough kid, but when you start to get to know him, you find out how sensitive he is and how he’s kind of just lost and he doesn’t have a home.  You don’t know what his life’s like, how many times he comes home and his mom’s not there, how much time he comes home and they got kicked out of their apartment.  You don’t know how his life is and I just figured that he had a lot of struggling and he never really had a home in life and he kind of finally finds one.  He is a wrestler as well.

How did you get this role?  No acting experience and now in a major motion picture  - that is quite the story and doesn’t happen everyday.

It all kind of came along pretty crazy, there was an article in the newspaper for all wrestlers from this side to this side to come in and audition for this role and my friend texted me and said, ‘hey you should audition for this’ and my initial response was no because it was wrestling season and I was wrestling.   Then he texted me again and was like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and that’s when I kind of really thought about it and thought, yeah it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I might never get this opportunity again, so I came and auditioned for it and finally got the role.

What did you do to prepare for the role once you found out you got it?

On the acting side, Tom [McCarthy] set me up with an acting coach and that helped a lot at first and then he gave me a movie to watch – Ordinary People.  In my own way, I just listened to a lot of screamo music and related my life to Eminem’s.

I read somewhere that the last time you acted was in sixth grade in Pirates of Penzance.  So what’s this experience been like compared to that one?

It was my only acting experience as funny as it is.  They were both great experiences.  I made a lot of friends during Pirates of Penzance and I had a lot of fun.  And I did the same on set – I made a lot of friends and I had a lot of fun.

What was it like working with two veteran actors?  Did they give you any tips?

I learned a lot, just from watching them.  I mean Paul never specifically told me anything and neither did Amy, but just from watching them, they’re just such fantastic actors, it’s crazy.

Before you starting filming this movie, you won the New Jersey state title for wrestling.  Any similarities between the preparing for a wrestling state championship and preparing for an acting role?

Preparing for it wise, they are two completely different things.  I was a whole nother person during that time compared to what I was doing for acting, but in comparison, they’re very similar in the sense of discipline and just the hard work.  Tom told me before I came on set that it was going to be hard.  I was like, okay Tom, and I just kind of blew him off like, I wrestled, this is not going to be hard.  A week afterwards, I just remember being so tired from it.

Did you do all your own wrestling in the film?  I assume you did?

That is true, I did do all of my own stunts as you could say.

What do your parents think of all this?  Are they supportive of you acting?

My parents are really cool.  They’re very supportive of it.  Right now I’m on my way to an acting lesson, so they’re very supportive of it.

 What’s next?  More acting?  Wrestling?

I definitely got hit by the acting bug, I love it, it’s so much fun.  I really want to start focusing on acting.  This year I was going to wrestle and I was still in high school and I had a back injury this summer, so I couldn’t.  I’m going to start focusing on acting, so I’m doing online classes.  And I’m really just focusing on becoming a better actor.  I’m taking acting classes and I just want to become better.  I’m going to finish out the rest of high school and then get into the acting.

What’s the story with the bleach blonde hair?  You don’t have it now.

My hair was bleached before the movie.  Our wrestling team to psyche out the seniors we were going to wrestle, we all bleached out hair and then I came to audition with this bleached hair and I remember sitting next to kids, they all had shaved heads and their varsity jackets on and I was sitting there with like bleached blonde hair, purple flannel, and pajama pants.  I was like wow, I’m not looking like Kyle whatsoever.

The Lincoln Lawyer Movie Review: A Legal Drama That Shines

$
0
0

The Lincoln Lawyer is - surprisingly - even better than the previews made it look - and the previews looked pretty good.  The story, starring Hollywood heavy weights Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Phillipe, is compelling; the actors make this film relevant and interesting from start to finish.

McConaughey is known for playing slick, smooth, and charming leading men, and The Lincoln Lawyer is no exception.  He is a sleazy attorney who seems to be in the biz just for the cold hard cash, but there's a soft side to this smooth-talking defense lawyer and McConaughey nails both sides of this character.

Finding Strength

The Plot:

The Lincoln Lawyer centers around criminal defense lawyer Mick Haller.  Haller is known for keeping criminals on the streets by getting them off the hook - for a price.  He does all his business out of the back of an old Lincoln town car, with the occasional help from driver Earl (Lawrence Mason).  He takes on a case involving a Beverley Hills playboy, Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillipe), accused of rape and attempted murder of a prostitute (Margarita Levieva).  He soon learns the case is not as cut and dry as original thought and Roulet may not be the innocent

victim of a set up.

The cast also includes Marisa Tomei as Maggie, a prosecutor and Mick's ex-love; William H. Macy as Mick's investigator; and Josh Lucas as the D.A trying Roulet's case.

Big Case

The Good:

The Lincoln Lawyer is a flashback to some of the best legal dramas of the '90s.  It is smooth and smart in its scripting and execution.  Nothing in this film seems forced or phony.

This is Matthew McConaughey at his best.  He does a great job as Mick Haller, although sometimes his cocky nature can come across more arrogant than charming, it completely works for this one. McConaughey isn't new to legal dramas - A Time To Kill and Amistad come to mind - and while he was great in those two films, he brings a maturity this time around that makes him that much more charming and compelling in his role.

Motorcycle Mania

The plot keeps you guessing right from the start and there isn't a dragging moment in the whole thing.  We find out early on what is really going in the Roulet case, so it doesn't feel like the film is a forced two hours of whodunit.  The story takes an interesting twist when Haller grows a conscience and sets out to right a past wrong that's connected with his current case.

Tomei delivers a great performance as Maggie, Heller's ex-wife and mother of his daughter.  The two obviously still have a strong attraction to one another and the back and forth between them is intoxicating and mesmerizing.  Macy is also great in his role as Heller's investigator and he brings the right amount of humor and sarcasm in his banter with Mick - we wouldn't expect anything less from Macy.

William H. Macy in Lincoln Laywer

The Bad:

Not much negative to say about this film as I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable.  The one area that seemed a little contrived were the courtroom scenes.  They came across as much too dramatic and over-the-top compared to the rest of the film.

Defending Ryan Phillippe

Overall, director Brad Furman brings us a film that is entertaining and satisfying.  He keeps the audience invested in Mick's life and even though Mick is a charming SOB who is mostly concerned with making money and seems to lack a conscience, we see his turnaround throughout the film and are rooting for him till the end.

Limitless Movie Review: Great Premise, So-So Execution

$
0
0

Limitless is an original story with huge potential.  It almost reaches that place, but doesn't quite cross the threshold to enter into the amazing zone.  Bradley Cooper does a fine job in his role and the whole idea of being the best versions of ourselves is something people are constantly striving for.

This escapist thriller does more than just evoke our senses, it gets us thinking about what we would do if we had that much power and intelligence.

Guarding the Drug

The Plot:

Bradley Cooper stars as Eddie Morra, a struggling writer who has hit rock bottom - he's suffering from writer block, his girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) has dumped him, and he is very quickly running out of money.  When he meets his ex-brother-in-law on the streets of NYC, his life changes for the better - or does it? He is given a drug called NZT that will help him write his book and stay focused.  He resists taking the pill at first, but then thinks 'what the heck?'

NZT does more than he ever dreamed, he becomes the best version of himself, using 100% of his brain when human's normally have the capacity to only use about 20% of their brain.  But what happens when people start to find out what is making you such a winner?  You become the target of some very dangerous and lethal people.  Eddie is thrown into a world of criminals and excessive greed, not to mention the troubles he faces when he runs out of the coveted super drug.

Bradley Cooper is Limitless

The Good:

The thriller is meant to entertain and have fun with the idea of having limitless access to the brain -- and it succeeds in doing that.  There are some greater underlying issues about drug use that are never fully explored.  When Eddie doesn't have the drug for a couple days, he goes through serious withdrawal and exhibits the same symptoms as one without heroine or cocaine would experience.  It's an interesting exploration on how far people would go to get what they want.

Abbie Cornish in Limitless

Although there are some of those underlying factors, the film doesn't take itself too seriously in general and Bradley Cooper does a great job of adding in tiny elements of humor throughout to keep the movie light and interesting.  Cooper's first performance in a leading role comes off with extreme success.  He does a great job playing a man who goes from having nothing and living in squalor to becoming a man who is practically invincible.

Everyone Wants the Drug

The Bad:

Director Neil Burger tries to completely encapsulate the visuals associated with taking this kind of drug. When Eddie is writing his book, we see words and numbers flying around the screen.  When he takes the pill, audience sees two or three versions of Eddie. The thought behind these visual elements is there and I can understand what Burger was trying to do, but it just comes across as distracting and disjointed.

Making it Big

Most of the film is fun and superficial with images of Eddie getting whatever he wants, including buying $8 million apartments and beach houses with luxury accommodations.  You never feel like you need to take the film too seriously, but then about 3/4 of the way through, there starts to be a little too much action-packed gory violence that doesn't quite seem to fit with the rest of the movie.  There is one scene in particular where Eddie drinks another man's blood just to get some of the NZT that's lingering there.

Breaking Up is Never Easy

Overall, Limitless is an entertaining film that will keep you interested for almost 2 hours, but it doesn't really have that extra sparkle that shoots it into the "amazing" territory.  Burger tries to do just that with the fast paced, exciting shots and sequences, but even with the creative shooting tactics, it's not quite there.  Greater intensity and a bit more quick banter between the characters would have improved the film significantly.

Filming for Peter Jackson's adaptation of the J.R.R Tolkien masterpiece The Hobbit is finally underway.  The movie starts filming today in New Zealand.

Everyone is excited to get started, Jackson's assistant told New Zealand media.

Shooting is finally underway after a couple of setbacks that created some major delays, including, a dispute over distribution rights, studio financial issues, Guillermo Del Toro's departure from the director's chair, and Peter Jackson's hospitilization earlier this year.

Whew, sounds like a lot of hurdles to jump over, but it's now time to get started.

Warner Bros. released the picture below of Jackson as an initiation to the start of filming.

10. The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)

Lion King 2: Simba

The Lion King is often hailed as one of the best Disney movies of all time, so why did they have to ruin it with this awful direct-to-video sequel.  The sequel centers around Simba's daughter Kiara who falls in love with Kovu, a male lion raised by Scar's followers. It's like a Romeo and Juliet with Lions.  Nothing original, nothing exciting.

9. Oceans 12 & 13 (2004, 2007)

Ocean's Twelve PictureOcean's Thirteen Photo

Although they got most of the originals back for the two sequels, including leading men Brad Pitt and George Clooney, that doesn't mean these all-star heist movie sequels will be any goodAnd they weren't.  Although enjoyable, if you compare them to the first one, they don't even come close.  I can forgive one sequel to the successful original, but two?  Putting salt in the wound!

8. Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde (2003)

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde Photo

This sequel brings back most of the original cast, including Reese Witherspoon who reprises her role as Elle Woods, but this one just doesn't have the same sparkle and gusto from the first flick.  The first movie is all about girl power and never letting someone's perceptions of you stop you from doing what you want.  It sent a good message to young girls in the end.  The sequel is just a silly way of trying to capitalize on the success of the first one.  No good substance here.

7. Godfather 3 (1990)

The Godfather Part 3 Poster

The first two Godfather films were pretty amazing.  Some even saying the sequel is better than the original.  Fine.  Great.  Sometimes sequels do well.  But let's stop at a good thing. The third Godfather was just not up to par with the other two and filmmakers should have seen the opportunity to cease and desist when they had a chance.  Even though it was nominated for SEVEN Academy Awards, we still think they should have stopped after two.

6. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights (2004)

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights Poster

Fifteen years after the original stole our hearts and became a huge success, Hollywood decided to try and capitalize on the success of the original 1989 Dirty Dancing to make this crappy sequel that should not have been associated with the original.  It didn't have any of the same characters and was more of a weird reboot than anything similar to the original.  What a waste of film!

5. Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (2000)

Balir Witch 2 Poster

The Blair Witch Project was an interesting movie concept and the viral marketing campaign worked wonders to get people interested in this flick with unknown actors to play in the terrifying movie.  When you have a good thing, you need to know when to stop!  This time, filmmakers tried to take advantage of the hit film and keep going with it.  It didn't work.  The second one wasn't as scary and seemed completely forced.

4. Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones, Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith (1999, 2002, 2005)

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace PhotoStar Wars: Episode IIStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Photo

The first three films (or the last three, you could say) were epic sci-fi adventure films, but then George Lucas decided to go back and let us know how it all began.  The three films are a shadow of what he originally produced.  So they came years later and had much better special effects, but its hard to top movies so ingrained in history and loved so dearly.

3. Grease 2 (1982)

Grease 2 Poster

This sequel was a disaster right from the start.  Trying to bring back the fun and summer lovin' that was Grease is almost impossible and even though the movie featured a young Michelle Pfeiffer, nothing could be done to save this film from epic failure. The movie takes place two years after Sandy and Danny graduate from Rydell High School and pretty much has the exact same plot, just reversed.  Pfeiffer's character, Stephanie is the badass this time around.

2. Jaws: The Revenge

Jaws: The Revenge

This is actually the third installment in the Steven Spielberg Jaws trilogy, but it pretty much ignores the plot from the second one Jaws 3D and becomes an awful final installment to such an epic film.  Jaws changed the way people looked at sharks and had people terrified to go into the ocean.  The Revenge just looked like it was trying to capitalize on the first film's success (which it was) and ended up a huge failure.

1. The Matrix 2 & 3 (2003)

The Matrix Reloaded Movie PosterThe Matrix Revolutions Movie Poster

The Matrix was an awesome movie that thrilled and stumped moviegoers, but when they tried to add two more to make a trilogy, it all went downhill.  The two films were shot at the same time and released at two different dates in 2003, and it shows! The two films didn't even give any answers - especially Revolution,  which did not give any answers to the questions raised in Reloaded.  A poor attempt to cash in on the first, extremely successful film.  Thankfully the rumors for a 4th and 5th have been squashed.

Paul Movie Review: Funny, But Bland

$
0
0

Paul is a silly comedy that will bring up feelings of nostalgia and desire for all sci-fi geeks, but not much beyond that small audience.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost bring their cleverness to the sci-fi world as two space enthusiasts from the UK vacationing in California for Comic-Con, establishing its geek credibility.  Beyond that, there are some funny bits and Seth Rogen delivers some good lines as the alien, Paul, but it's not an epic adventure that everyone will love.

Encounters with Aliens

The Plot:

Pegg and Frost play Graeme and Clive, two sci-fi geeks who come to the USA to live their alien dreams.  The duo start off at comic-con and then rent a Winnebago to travel across America, visiting all the alien landmarks.  Their sci-fi journey gets a shock of reality when they meet a real-life alien (how convenient) named Paul. After being in Area 51 for years, Paul is running from the government (Jason Bateman) who no longer has any use for him and wants him dead in order to experiment on him.  He is looking for his ship in order to get back home and escape his ill fate.

Paul!

The Bad:

Unnecessary gay jokes and crude humor keep surfacing in between a weak storyline.  It a film set in an old RV with random speaking and jokes throughout.  Although director Greg Mottola tries to weave a story into the film, it's masked by the attempted humor, which most of the time, doesn't even fit.

A Connection of Love

Pegg and Frost are lovable, but they just come across as unaware and stupid tourists.  Yes, they are in the American Southwest, which isn't even remotely similar to Britain, but their naivete to that part of America doesn't come across as funny, it just makes them seem awkward and dumb.

First Alien Landmark

The Good:

Kristen Wiig stars as Ruth, and although it was strange to see Wiig as an evangelical Christian, she was actually very funny.  Her faith is tested when she meets Paul and the fact that the theory of evolution might just be how the world came to be is a struggle for her to accept.  Wiig is hilarious as she plays a shy and awkward Ruth who comes out of her shell after running away with Graeme, Clive, and Paul. Her first attempts at swearing (in all the wrong places) is one of the few actual funny bits in the movie.

Ruth Calls Her Father

Seth Rogen doesn't actually appear in Paul, but his voice does.  He lends his vocal talents to the little alien who has a dirty mouth and a crude sense of humor.  Rogen does a great job of delivering his lines and, although we can't actually see him, we see his voice translate well through the alien.

Crude Little Alien

Overall, sci-fi geeks will probably appreciate the ode to their interests and passion, but there aren't enough funny moments to keep this film afloat for the entire time.

The Coco Mademoiselle perfume ad is all about strength in a young woman and living in a man's world as a beautiful young woman.  Knightley plays the part with complete precision.  She is a strong and sexy woman who doesn't give in to a man's desire, but teases the hell out of him in the process.

It's a great mini-movie from the Chanel, the company who makes Coco Mademoiselle.  Knightley is perfect in this mini-film, directed by Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright (also a frequent Knightley collaborator).

It's quite the experience from beginning to end and director Joe Wright brings out just the right amount of sex and mystery in this 3:20 short film.
