Steve Carell is taking his comedy to the most unlikely of places: The post-apocalyptic world. The trailer for Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, that co-stars Keira Knightley, has premiered. The film is the big screen debut for screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist). It takes place sometime in the future, in fact, not too far away from today’s world, and delves into the complexity that is what the last days of humankind would feel like for those involved. Yes, it is a comedy. We swear!

The Vow Movie Review: True Romance Revisited

$
0
0

From its ad campaigns, The Vow has its audience thinking Nicholas Sparks. The trailers state, "Starring The Notebook’s Rachel McAdams and Dear John’s Channing Tatum." That does not help things. Not to knock Sparks’ movies, but The Vow stands purely on its own and is a surprisingly sweet and tender romance.

Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum Star in The Vow
Tatum is Leo and he has been married to McAdams’ Paige for a few short months. One night the two get a little amorous in their car and fate slams the couple into chaos in the form of a massive automobile accident. Paige awakes in the hospital, completely unaware who Leo is and why he is standing at her bedside. In fact, she thinks he is her doctor.

Based on a true story of a couple who dealt with similar challenges, the realness of The Vow is probably what sets it apart from other romance films of late.

Thankfully, the film never drifts into predictability. There is no Hollywood ending that one would expect. At a certain point in the film the audience realizes that there is no way to get from where we are in the story to that sweeping, hearts-pounding romantic finish. Don’t get us wrong, the ending is terrific and executed effectively, it’s just not what would be expected… and that is a very good thing.

Tatum and McAdams
are electric. Largely, that is why the film works. Both keenly know their romance movie and prove what fine actors they are once again by never straying from the playbook of the genre. Because of the true story aspect, it is easy to see how McAdams and Tatum brought their A-game. It is an inspiring tale of the power of love and in the hands of The Vow’s leads, there is no denying the collective pull for these two to work it out.

Screenwriters Jason Katims, Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein and Michael Sucsy have taken a story by Stuart Sender and sent a breath of fresh air into the stale romantic film world. It’s been a while since there was a celebrated film of its ilk and The Vow is here to announce a new one to treasure.

Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) and Sam Neill (Alcatraz) shine as McAdams’ parents, but often seem a bit cardboard cut out instead of fully flushed out characters. That is possibly the only fault we can find with this sweeping romance that finds its inspiration in the smallest of places: Two beating hearts.

George Lucas: Greedo Shot Han Solo First!

It is a debate that has raged since Star Wars premiered back in 1977 and George Lucas has commented to supposedly set the record straight. As his Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace hits theaters in 3D, Lucas addressed the controversy that has centered on the collective belief that Han Solo shot the dreaded Greedo first. Fans believe that only adds to the bad ass nature of the character, but Lucas is here to completely disagree.

Han Solo and Greedo: Who Shot First?
“The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t,” Lucas said. The director went back through the scene in an effort to clear up the confusion. “It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.”

So… what do you think?

Did Han Solo shoot Greedo first?

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Movie Review: Aloha Adventure!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a sweeping adventure that takes audiences to a crossroads of the worlds of Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. It opens with Josh Hutcherson character Sean from Journey to the Center of the Earth on an obsessive path to solve the riddle that is a message he received from someone who he believes is his lost adventurer grandfather.

Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens in Journey 2
Dwayne Johnson is his stepfather Hank and the two have a tenuous relationship to say the least. As Johnson shows his prowess with code solving from his military days, that frost between the two is melted and they are off on a quest to the titular paradise. They meet Luis Guzman and his daughter Vanessa Hudgens on a South Pacific island and enlist their helicopter services to find the elusive emerging from the sea land mass. We won’t ruin how they arrive, but once they discover the Mysterious Island, their adventure is merely commencing.

Director Brad Peyton has a field day with his 3D camera once we arrive on the locale where elephants are tiny and insects are giants. It never feels gimmicky except in one part of the picture where Johnson is advising Hutcherson on how to impress women. It’s also the weakest part of the movie as most women would tell you bouncing pecs are not the most attractive thing in the world. But in the vast scope of Journey 2, that misstep can be ignored.

Moments after arriving on the island, trouble strikes. The quartet are walking on rocks that they soon discover are lizard eggs and momma is not happy. That race leads to them meeting up with Sean’s missing grandfather (Michael Caine).

By weaving together the legends set forth in four classic books, the palette for the film’s storytellers to cull from is large. Yet, the film is mired in lack of focus at times that keeps the adventure a little grounded when it should soar.

The one thing that is so striking about Journey 2 is the screen presence of Hutcherson. For those who may have questioned his casting as Peeta in The Hunger Games (win tickets to the premiere!), you can relax. The actor handles the tightrope of action and emotion effectively. Although Johnson may be the big star, and Caine’s presence adds a legend factor, this is Hutcherson’s film. He has grown, physically and emotively, since he first appeared in the original 2008 film.

When Lionsgate merged with Summit Entertainment, everyone in the industry couldn’t help but think that about the power this new entity now has by possessing the releasing rights to The Hunger Games books as well as the Twilight series. "We're very excited about the opportunities created by our recent acquisition of Summit Entertainment. The February 11 home entertainment release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 1, the March 23 theatrical release of Hunger Games and the November 16 theatrical release of Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn 2 lead a strong combined slate that we believe will enable us to deliver increased consistency, profitability and value to our shareholders," said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer.

In a move that most Twilight fans heralded in our poll, Lionsgate has also announced that it would like author Stephenie Meyer to pen another book in her vampire series. It looks like we’re not done with the Edward and Bella saga after Breaking Dawn Part 2’s November 16 arrival.

Three new films land in theaters this weekend and one older film that is using The Force via its 3D upgrade. George Lucas has taken the Anakin Skywalker journey to the Dark Side and put it in three dimensions as The Phantom Menace arrives at the movie house with a snazzy new look. Meanwhile, The Vow hopes to woo lovers in a pre-Valentine’s Day mood. Denzel Washington rocks the bad guy in Safe House and Dwayne Johnson heads to The Mysterious Island in Journey 2.

Safe House: Washington rivets as a rogue CIA agent who comes in from the cold one fateful day in Johannesburg, South Africa. Quickly rushed to Ryan Reynolds’ Safe House, it is clear that getting this man to justice in America will be one difficult task as the two escape ambush after attack. Movie Fanatic has high hopes at the box office for this sleek thriller, as we state in our Safe House review.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island: Josh Hutcherson is back as Sean, reprising his role from Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brendan Fraser is gone and Dwayne Johnson has replaced him as the male lead as Sean heads out on another adventure. This time out they are searching for Jules Verne’s iconic island and enlist the help of helicopter pilot Luis Guzman and his daughter, played by Vanessa Hudgens. Is the film worth the Journey? Read our Journey 2: The Mysterious Island review to find out!

The Vow: Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams are newlyweds who, when McAdams’ Paige awakes in the hospital after a car accident, deal with her memory loss. Specifically, she cannot remember anything about her entire relationship with Tatum’s Leo. The Vow is a perfect Valentine’s Day movie and is the rare romance that doesn’t fall into the stereotypical traps. Check out our The Vow review for more on this surprising film.

Star Wars Episode One The Phantom Menace: Lucas is planning to release his entire six-part Star Wars series in theaters in 3D. Of course Episode One will be first and The Phantom Menace arrives on screens today with the hopes that fans of the series will return to the theaters to see it once again on the big screen. Considering many believe the film to be the worst of the series, the jury is out as to whether this latest move by Lucas will pay off.

Safe House Exclusive Interview: Nora Arnezeder has Arrived

French actress Nora Arnezeder was beyond thrilled that her first American movie, Safe House, was one that starred two of Hollywood's biggest box office draws. “One day, if I have kids, I can tell them I did a movie with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. It’s an honor,” she said in our exclusive interview. “I’m sure they’re going to be impressed.”

Ryan Reynolds and Nora Arnezeder in Safe House
They should be as Safe House is not only a star packed film that also features Sam Shepard, Brendan Gleeson and Vera Farmiga, but is a real barn burning thriller. What impressed her the most about appearing in the film, beyond the names on the marquee, was how the film was an action film, but worked so well from inside the human head. “It’s very psychological,” Arnezeder added. She was also drawn to the project because she is a fan of director Daniel Espinosa’s last film, Snabba Cash. “I thought it was such a special movie. He’s such a smart director. I had to work with him.”

Espinosa, even though he knew that Arnezeder had the challenge of acting in English for the first time, insisted she find what’s real in the most unreal of extraordinary situations that is the premise of Safe House. “He insisted on just to be in the moment and not trying so hard. He really pushed me into real emotions,” Arnezeder said.

The actress spends all of her scenes as Reynolds’ love interest. The two are clearly deeply enamored of one another onscreen, and Arnezeder clearly treasured the openness of the actor working across from her. “It’s such a blessing to work with him. He’s such a good listener. We have a lot of improvisation together. I was blown away. It was my first American movie and I wanted to do well, especially because it was in English,” she said. “Ryan helped me so much with that. He was so generous helping me with my English [laughs]. The chemistry was there right away.”

One scene was particularly tough. She had to spend an emotionally charged evening striking Reynolds over and over. “I felt so bad for that,” Arnezeder said and laughed. “We had to do that scene so many times. It’s very hard. I was scared to hurt him for real. When you are channeling all that emotion, I was afraid it would be too strong. But, he was very brave.”

Often times the romantic interest of the lead characters in action movies can be window dressing. On Safe House, Arnezeder saw none of that in her character Ana Moreau. “She’s not the female bean pole that you expect in an action movie. Also there were many scenes that allowed me to express lots of different emotions. That was interesting. I appreciated how far she would go for love,” she said. “Even when he tells her that he works for the CIA at the end, of course she’s very disappointed, but she’s ready to stay with him. You could work with so much when you’re portraying someone who is so in love.”

Sounds like the entire Safe House experience was one to treasure for Arnezeder, doesn’t it? Well, returning to South Africa -- where she had filmed a French movie before -- made the effort even sweeter. “I was there five years ago and when they said that we’re shooting Safe House in South Africa, I was so happy to go back,” the actress said. “There is such a spirit there. You get inspired by this place. It’s hard to explain the beauty of it. There is a very special light. I would recommend painters to go there and paint what they see. It is so brilliant.”

Oscar Watch: The Help is Heaven

Many pundits thought it was foolish for Disney to release a socially important movie such as The Help during the heat of the summer movie season. Experts believed that the film would be forgotten come Oscar time. How wrong they were as The Help scored four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.

The Help Women
Oscar Watch, Movie Fanatic’s daily look at all things Academy Awards, shines the spotlight today on The Help and the little movie that could and its triumphant march to the Kodak Theatre on awards night -- February 26.

The Help is based on the book by Kathryn Stockett that is beloved by tens of millions. Star Viola Davis had sought out the book's rights as soon as she read it, only to discover it was already owned by Tate Taylor. Lucky for her and those legions of fans, Taylor was keenly aware of the book’s elements that most resonated and brought the magic of it to the screen as screenwriter and director -- with Davis as Aibileen Clark.

If you haven’t seen the film yet, it is a cinematic triumph in the portrayal of the power of the human spirit. It is a must-see for every soul on the planet. Movie Fanatic honored it with its appearance on our Top 10 Movies of 2011 and its Best Picture nod is hardly a surprise -- it is wholeheartedly deserved.

Whether it wins or not we shall see, but it warrants serious consideration. The Descendants and The Artist seem to be fighting for the trophy, and if they split the vote, perhaps The Help could slide in. Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain are one-two favorites, respectively in the Best Supporting Actress category and Davis is battling Meryl Streep as one of the two actresses who should win the Best Actress trophy.

All told, The Help is not only a film that shines with its box office success in 2011 and awards triumphs in 2012. This is one of those rare films that deserves to be heralded for decades to come as it is a piece of work that transcends years and award seasons.

According to star Bryce Dallas Howard, in our exclusive interview, even if the film wins no awards, the actresses involved and their shared experience making the movie is all the accolade needed. "It literally could not have been a more supportive group of people and creative group of people. In terms of our approach, we were all really on the same page in terms of our methodology. It was really kind of fantastic," Howard said. "You can’t strive for that in every movie because you never know. I just came from lunch with everybody and [laughs] we just have so much fun together. It’s a really, really great group."

The Vow Wows the Box Office

Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum scored much more than chemistry with their romance film The Vow, they electrified audiences to the tune of $41.7 million. The record-breaking weekend take astonished movie experts and spoke to the power of romance.

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams: Stars of The Vow
For the first time since December 2008 four movies debuted in one weekend, all making more than $20 million. Wonder if that Hollywood box office drought of 2011 is officially over? Time will tell. But for now, Hollywood is relishing in the news that Safe House, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and The Phantom Menace all debuted on Friday and each broke the coveted $20 million mark by the end of the weekend.

The result was the biggest February non-holiday weekend… ever!

The Vow not only helped set the record, it scored the highest debut for a Sony Screen Gems film in history. The previous record holder for Screen Gems also starred Tatum, and that was Dear John. Guess audiences like Tatum in those romantic roles.

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds didn’t do too badly with their cinematic chemistry either. The thriller Safe House opened to $39.3 million to land in second place. It is the second best opening film ever for Washington, behind 2007’s American Gangster.

Journey 2, the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, exceeded expectations with its third place finish. The Dwayne Johnson starrer banked $27.6 million. The first film debuted in 2008 with $21 million. That is exactly what the film’s studio, Universal, loves… when a sequel outperforms the original.

The film that still did well, but not as well as they would have liked is The Phantom Menace in 3D. The George Lucas saga’s “first” chapter earned $23 million in its debut week for a fourth place finish.

Box office top 10:

1. The Vow, $41.7 million
2. Safe House, $39.3 million
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, $27.55 million
4. Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, $23 million
5. Chronicle, $12.3 million
6. The Woman in Black, $10.3 million
7. The Grey, $5.1 million
8. Big Miracle, $3.9 million
9. The Descendants, $3.5 million
10. Underworld Awakening, $2.5 million

The Artist Wins BAFTA Best Picture

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) gave The Artist more momentum towards its Oscar Best Picture push by naming it Best Picture of the Year at its annual ceremony in London.

Berenice Bejo Stars in The Artist
The Artist won seven BAFTAs, including Best Male Actor for Jean Dujardin, plus Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Michel Hazanavicius.

The only British film to earn a Best Picture nomination, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, had to settle for two awards: Top British Film and Adapted Screenplay. The spy thriller, based on John le Carre's iconic spy novel, began the night with 11 nominations, one behind The Artist’s total.

In his acceptance speech, Dujardin spoke to the universal appeal of The Artist, despite its being a silent, black-and-white film. “It’s a simple story. It’s a love story. It’s universal,” he said. “And there’s a cute dog!”

The French film also won awards for costume design, musical score and cinematography.

Meryl Streep was named Best Actress for her portrayal of British political icon Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Given Streep’s incredible transformation into the U.K.’s first female PM, the film's awards for hair and makeup were not a surprise and seriously deserved.

The Supporting Actor winner was Christopher Plummer for Beginners, continuing his seemingly unstoppable run to winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Meanwhile, Octavia Spencer continued her own steamrolling award season by winning Best Supporting Actress for The Help. In her speech, Spencer thanked the British Film Academy for recognizing her film, despite what people may have thought of a strictly American film. “Some have called The Help an American movie about American problems and American history,” she said. “I am so grateful to you for seeing past that -- because surely oppression knows no gender, no sexual orientation, no country.”

Whitney Houston: Remembering Her Genius on Film

As news spread that Whitney Houston had died at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Saturday, Movie Fanatic was immediately struck by the indelible mark she made as an actress over her short life. Houston is being remembered today across the globe for her astounding singing voice. But, let’s not forget the work she did as a full-fledged movie star.

Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard
It is with great sadness that we look back at her career on film, and also preview what would be her last film that is due in August.

In 1992, she set the world on fire with her screen debut opposite Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard (will there be a remake?). The soundtrack to the film is still in the top 10 highest-selling albums of all time. Houston could not have been more impeccably cast as a singer who is being threatened and needs Costner’s titular character to save her. The romance caused hearts to flutter in the early ‘90s as the love story between the two leapt off the screen. One of her most iconic recordings as a singer was from The Bodyguard -- I Will Always Love You. The song went straight to number one and sat there for months.

1995 saw her as part of the ensemble cast of one of the literary world's most popular novels which found its way to the big screen. Waiting to Exhale was written by Terry McMillan and was one of the most anticipated page-to-screen efforts of its time. Houston was joined by Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, Gregory Hines and Dennis Haysbert in an all-star cast that riveted every bit as much as the book did. Houston more than held her own with Oscar nominee Bassett and served to also give the singer another great song from a movie soundtrack. Exhale (Shoop Shoop) sold more than one million copies, being certified platinum.

A year later, Houston scored another hit by appearing opposite Denzel Washington in The Preacher’s Wife. The film starred Houston as the wife of minister Courtney B. Vance while Washington played Dudley the angel. The film was surprisingly touching and also allowed Houston’s mother Cissy to join in on the soundtrack love with her recording of The Lord is My Shepherd. Not to be left out of the soundtrack magic, Houston scored another smash with her inspirational hit song Step by Step.

As we look back at the cinematic career of Houston, it is with great sadness that the astounding artist is set to appear in a new film that is due this summer. She stars in Sparkle opposite Jordin Sparks, Mike Epps, Derek Luke and Omari Hardwick. In a tragic stroke of fate, given the late singer’s struggles, the story of Sparkle follows a sister singing group that must deal with fame and how the use of drugs comes close to destroying their careers and familial bonds.

Whitney Houston, rest in peace.
