The Watch Trailer Airs on Conan: Look at His Face and Listen to Me

A new trailer for The Watch aired on Conan the other night, and it has now hit the internet. And don't worry, The Watch doesn't have a laugh track, that's the Conan audience reacting to the video.

The film, formerly titled Neighborhood Watch, stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn (Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted), and Jonah Hill, who starred earlier this year in 21 Jump Street (check out some 21 Jump Street quotes), as men in a neighborhood watch who uncover an alien plot to destroy the world. The trailer features a pretty hilarious clip of Stiller and Hill taking an interrogation a bit too seriously.

The Watch is directed by Akiva Schaffer, and will be released on July 27. It marks the second time the SNL Digital Shorts director has headed up a feature film, after 2007's Hot Rod.

If you'd like to see what is essentially the above trailer, but with lots of F-bombs thrown in, head over to The Watch red band trailer.

Men in Black 3 Exclusive: Barry Sonnenfeld Speaks on Trilogy

Barry Sonnenfeld is back for his third go-around as director for the Men in Black series in Men in Black 3. The helmer is talking to Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview where he takes us inside the magic that is Will Smith and how the addition of Josh Brolin as a young onscreen Tommy Lee Jones not only made us recall the latter actor’s stalwart Agent K, but brought so many more levels to the film than Sonnenfeld could ever have imagined.

Barry Sonnenfeld Directs Will Smith and Josh Brolin on Men in Black 3
Sonnenfeld also shares an exclusive story illustrating why Smith is much more than a star he’s worked with four times now, but someone he considers his creative equal.

Movie Fanatic: Josh, he had to make it so we don’t miss Tommy in Men in Black 3 -- but wasn’t Tommy. When did it hit you how profound his performance was?

Barry Sonnenfeld: I’ll tell you what -- I knew he was going to nail it when I saw him in W, which was years before there even was a script for Men in Black 3 [laughs]. I thought that performance was brilliant in that movie. Then I met Brolin a few times through the Coens (Ethan and Joel). I was never surprised that he wasn’t going to nail it. I will say the first time we actually shot, which was at Men in Black headquarters when he’s interviewing Will in 1969, that was the first day for Josh. We did the first take and I burst into tears. I think Josh thought I was upset. But, I realized it all was right.

Movie Fanatic: Did you worry about reducing Tommy’s role as you introduced the younger K, played by Josh?

Barry Sonnenfeld: Will and I always said that the way you screw up this movie is by taking a franchise where you had a great team, Will and Tommy, and now we’re not going to have that team? We better have someone as good because it’s a two-hander. It’s not the Will Smith show. Brolin nailed it. Will and I laugh because we thought no one would think Brolin did a good job because they’re going to think it was Tommy who dubbed his lines the whole time [laughs]!

Movie Fanatic: The other side of that coin is Will. What’s he like for you as a collaborator? I get the impression he’s really hands on with you and these Men in Black films. Also, what is it about him that is so magnetic?

Barry Sonnenfeld: I suspect he must actually be an alien because he’s got more energy, is happier and brings you into his vortex and suddenly you’re uplifted. He’s so optimistic. There’s that. He also is a student of Joseph Campbell’s work, and is always talking about the hero’s journey. He’s really good with script and structure. The great thing about working with Will is in my case, he and I agreed on everything. I wouldn’t want to work with Will if we were butting heads because Will is really strong and smart and I’m not articulate and he’s really articulate. So, the good thing is Will and I are always making the same movie -- that’s what’s fun about this. To have Will on your side when you’re trying to make this movie is just fantastic. The thing about Will is, and I think he believes this, is that he’s got to work harder than anybody else. He’s got to be more responsible.

Movie Fanatic: Do you have a most memorable story of working with Will Smith?

Barry Sonnenfeld: I remember one night we were shooting a stunt on Wild Wild West. Rigging wasn’t going well and Will was in his camper. We were shooting in Burbank and he had to fly back to New York. The Burbank airport closed at midnight. They ferried the plane to LAX because we were running to late. Will had to be on some show that morning. The rigging was taking too long. So, I told Will to just get on the plane and we’ll do it with the stunt man and we won’t be able to tell it wasn’t Will. Will came onto the set and said, “What do you mean I can go?” He said, “I don’t play that way. If you need me, don’t worry about anything else.” That’s the man he is, that’s the way he works. It’s shocking with him being such a big star, he just gives and gives.

Movie Fanatic: I love your Men in Black 3 villain, played by Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement. He just dives into Boris…

Barry Sonnenfeld: Jemaine is the nicest and is not the Boris the Animal guy. Danny Elfman, who did the score, is a huge Flight of the Conchords fan as am I. I showed him the movie the first time so he could write the score. He said to me when it was over, “That villain is fantastic. Who is he?” I said, “Jemaine Clement.” He said, “No!” He knows all the songs of his! Jemaine totally transformed himself along with Rick Baker and his five hours of makeup everyday. Here's a true story: Jemaine has such a thick New Zealand accent that I could never understand him [laughs]. But, he plays Boris high British. So, whenever we would go to dinner together, I would ask him to only speak to me in a British accent so I could understand him [laughs].

Barry Sonnenfeld Directs Will Smith on Men in Black 3
Movie Fanatic: Going back to the beginning, what was it about the world of Men in Black that most appealed to you?

Barry Sonnenfeld: It’s really weird. I remember reading the first draft of Men in Black in 1993. The first draft took place in Kansas, Las Vegas, Washington D.C. and a third of it was underground with queen alien bugs -- everywhere but New York. It was a very different script. But, I remember reading it and instantly saying to my wife, “I want to do this movie.” I think what it was was one line of dialogue, which made it into the movie, where Tommy Lee Jones has recruited Will Smith. He shows him the big board of all the aliens on Earth and Tommy says, “This must all seem pretty amazing to you.” To which Will says, “Not really, I had a third grade teacher, Mrs. Edelston, and I would have thought she was from Mars.” And Tommy says, “Venus… or one of the moons.” For me, that's what attracted me about the whole franchise. I don’t want to sound profound, but I think we don’t have a clue about what’s going on with anything. I wrote a speech for Tommy in the first Men in Black. He says, “A thousand years ago, everyone knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five-hundred years ago, everyone knew the Earth was flat. Think about what you’ll know tomorrow.” When I was a kid, the dinosaurs became extinct because of the Ice Age. Then, it was a meteor. If I look back at my old science tests, things that I got wrong are now right. We think we’re all experts. Everything we think can be proven wrong at some point. I think the Men in Black world says in effect, “You don’t have a clue what’s going on around you.”

The Dictator: 'Missile Scene' Restricted Clip Hits the Net

The Dictator has been in theaters for just over a week now, but they're still releasing clips. This "Official Restricted Clip" features Jason Mantzoukas and Sacha Baron Cohen, the stars of The Dictator helicopter scene that swept the internet before the film's release. Watch the new 'missile scene' below.

The clip shows another example of the hilarious chemistry of Mantzoukas and Cohen, and the sheer idiocy of Cohen's General Aladeen character. Check out some The Dictator quotes for more.

Cohen has made a career out of creating characters that exploit stereotypes as a challenge to the audience, starting with Ali G, Borat (visit our Borat quotes page), and Bruno, and leading to Aladeen. He has broadened his roles of late, however, and can be seen later this year in Les Miserables, and next year as Freddie Mercury in Mercury.

The Dictator is out in theaters now. So if you enjoyed this clip and haven't seen the movie yet, what are you waiting for?

Mads Mikkelsen is set to make another villainous turn.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Danish actor (Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans) is nearing a deal to appear as some kind of bad guy in Thor 2, the follow-up to the 2011 blockbuster that is scheduled for a July 2013 release.

Mads Mikkelsen in the Three Musketeers

Mikkelsen would join Tom Hiddleston as an antagonist in the sequel, as the latter has already signed on to reprise Loki, the role he made famous in the original and then again in The Avengers.

Chris Hemsworth, of course, will return, as Thor and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.

Marvel is following the wild success of The Avengers with a number of sequels aside from Thor 2. Filming actually began this week on Iron Man 3, while another Captain America: The First Avenger is in the works and there's also talk of a Mark Ruffalo-based Incredible Hulk feature.

Two new Prometheus featurettes have landed like so many giant spaceships carrying crews seeking answers to the origins of mankind.

In the first, Logan Marshall-Green talks about his role as Charlie Holloway, who he calls the "guts" of team. He also talks a bit about what it was like working with Ridley Scott, of whom he says he's a "fan-boy."

Scott, an acclaimed director of sci-fi movies including Alien and Blade Runner (have you heard about the Blade Runner sequel?), clearly had a vision when making Prometheus, as evidenced by his passion and excitement for the film in the second featurette.

Prometheus stars Marshall-Green, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and Guy Pearce and can be seen in theaters beginning June 8. For a another glimpse at the film before its release, head over to the Prometheus trailer.

Warner Bros. has been releasing promotional pics left and right in the last few days, including these Dark Knight Rises character posters, but these banners show off some cool scenes from the actual film.

It seems the more pictures of Bane are released, the happier the internet gets. The menacing, hulking villain is played by Tom Hardy, who stars alongside Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Chernobyl Diaries Movie Review: Radioactive or Riveting?

$
0
0

Oren Peli is certainly a master of the found-footage genre. His Paranormal Activity set off a Hollywood trend that doesn’t show any sign of slowing with the box office success of films such as Chronicle and Project X. What he has achieved with his latest production, Chernobyl Diaries, will surprise. Even though the film commences with a found-footage means of introducing characters, it quickly shifts to a traditional narrative that -- believe it or not -- still possesses that “you are there” feeling of the wildly popular subgenre of filmmaking.

The Cast of Chernobyl Diaries
That is a good thing when it comes to telling the tale of a group of extreme tourists visiting the site of the Ukrainian nuclear disaster. By having the audience feel as if they are a seventh participant in the scary jaunt, the viewer feels every jolt to their system as if it were our own.

Jesse McCartney and Jonathan Sadowski portray brothers Paul and Chris. The latter is bringing his soon-to-be fiance Natalie (Olivia Dudley) and her BFF (Devin Kelley) to visit Paul in Kiev where he has been living. The group is supposed to head to Moscow to continue their European vacation when Paul meets Uri, the owner of an extreme tourism company that promises the once-in-a-lifetime experience of visiting a large city that is now desolate. Yes, we’re talking about Chernobyl. The group becomes convinced this is a good idea (in typical horror movie fashion, the audience already knows it isn’t). They hook up with a European couple also down for the adventure and off they go in Uri’s van.

The story of the Chernobyl disaster is well chronicled. What we do not see much of anymore is the aftermath and how nature has taken back the radioactive locale where people once ruled. As our group arrives, the silence is deafening and the desolation truly haunting. In Peli’s film (which he wrote and produced while Bradley Parker directed), it seems like it takes a little long to inject the spook into this horror story. But, when it arrives… prepare to jump out of your seat.

As seen in the Chernobyl Diaries trailer, after the two-hour tour, Uri’s van won’t start. They are stranded, darkness is beginning to fall and they discover they are not alone.

Where the film works is how it takes the simplest of premises that horror films have always used, and only spoon feeds the audiences the terror. Therefore, every turn our group takes after they are forced from their van could truly be our next scream-at-the-screen moment. You will find your head slowly moving towards the screen, eager to witness what on earth is going on and who or what is terrifying our tour group… only to snap it back against the seat as something leaps out to send shivers down your spine.

Chernobyl Diaries does have its problems. But, most horror movies are far from perfect. That’s not why we go to them. If a film can give us a few jolts of fear, characters we care about that we want to see get out of danger and close the movie in a manner that has us frozen in our seat trying to wrap our heads around what just happened as the credits roll, then it has done its job. Peli and his filmmaking team have achieved exactly that.

Squirrel to the Nuts, a long-dead Peter Bogdanovich project, has been resurrected! And they're adding exciting contributors left and right.

Owen Wilson, Olivia Wilde, and Brie Larson have signed on to star, with Jason Schwartzman close to joining. In addition the star-studded cast, Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach will be reuniting to produce.

Owen Wilson at You, Me and Dupree

Squirrel to the Nuts, which was previously killed in 2010, will mark Bogdanovich's first feature directing effort since 2001's The Cat's Meow. The film will follow Wilson as a Broadway producer who falls in love with an ex-hooker actress, played by Larson, despite being married to the star of the show.

Wilson, known primarily as a comedic actor for such films as Wedding Crashers (check out our Wedding Crashers quotes page), proved he can pull off a subtler performance in last year's Oscar-winning film Midnight in Paris. Wilson is also a frequent collaborator of Anderson's, having co-written Bottle Rocket, the film that launched both of their careers, with the director.

In other Wes Anderson news, his new film Moonrise Kingdom opened today. Keep your eyes peeled for more Squirrel to the Nuts news soon.

Jon Favreau is not returning to direct the third Iron Man movie, but this recent twitpic suggests he will return to play Happy Hogan, Iron Man's assistant, guard, and friend.

The Avengers: Iron Man

As Iron Man 3 prepares to begin shooting, the final pieces are falling into places. In addition to Favreau's announcement, relative unknown Ashley Hamilton will join on as the villain Firepower.

Marvel and Walt Disney Pictures are still at an all-time high coming off the success of The Avengers, and they're rewarding themselves and fans with a slew of new superhero films, including Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Ant-Man, and of course, The Avengers 2.

The newest Iron Man will once again star the magnetic Robert Downey Jr. in the title role alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, and Ben Kingsley. Kingsley can be seen in theaters now in The Dictator. Take a look at our The Dictator quotes page for more, and look for Iron Man 3 to hit theaters May 3, 2013.

Weekend Movie Preview: May 25, 2012

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and the arrival of that date used to mean the start of the summer movie season. Of course we all know now that Hollywood rolls out their warmer month fare earlier in May as The Avengers, Battleship and Dark Shadows have all taken their place in theaters. This holiday weekend marks the return of Will Smith in Men in Black 3, a horror yarn from the creator of Paranormal Activity and the most charming, utterly fantastic movie you will see this year in Moonrise Kingdom.

Men in Black 3: Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return to the franchise for their first time together in a decade. The film pops on all fronts -- from its stellar special effects to a killer performance by Josh Brolin as the young Jones, plus the combining of comedy and sci-fi that has made the film series so resonant. The third film is right up there with the first. Check out our Men in Black 3 review for more.

Chernobyl Diaries: Oren Peli wrote and produced this film that is -- gasp -- not a found footage movie. Six twenty-somethings head to the titular locale for an extreme tourism experience that of course goes horribly wrong. Seems they’re not alone and when their van won’t start… it appears their nightmare will not end well. As we state in our Chernobyl Diaries review, Peli and his team have made a solid horror flick.

Moonrise Kingdom: Movie Fanatic’s early pick for movie of the year has landed. Wes Anderson has crafted a world we want to visit again and again. When two tweens in love run away, it mobilizes the zany characters of a fictional New England island, and warmth and hilarity ensue in droves. Starring Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Frances McDormand… Anderson’s latest is his greatest. Don’t miss our five-star Moonrise Kingdom review.

The Apparition Trailer: Is It All in Their Minds?

$

The new horror film The Apparition skirts around an obvious flaw in paranormal horror films: that some viewers just don't believe in ghosts (can something you don't believe in be scary?), by creating a world where the human mind itself creates the horrifying creatures. Check out the first trailer below.

The Apparition stars Ashley Greene (Breaking Dawn part 2) and Sebastian Stan (Gone) star as a couple who are being haunted by a terrifying presence unleashed by a mind experiment. The trailer does a great job of conveying the psychology of fear, a horror movie element that often takes a film to the next level of scary.

Another horror movie, Chernobyl Diaries, arrived in theaters today. The movie follows a group of "extreme tourists" who find themselves trapped at the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

The Apparition is directed by first-timer Todd Lincoln. Look for the movie in theaters August 24.

Either Gatsby is about to suck Daisy's soul out from her eyeballs, or these two are about to kiss. The woods would be a good location for either.

The Great Gatsby Still: Gatsby and Daisy

This still image comes on the heels of the first The Great Gatsby trailer, released earlier this week. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway.

Maguire, best known for playing Spider-Man in the Sam Raimi films, will also appear in Ang Lee's latest, Life of Pi, which arrives in theaters December 21. The Great Gatsby will also feature Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher, who played the eccentric Gloria Cleary in The Wedding Crashers (check out some of her most hilarious The Wedding Crashers quotes).

The Great Gatsby, an adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, is directed by Baz Luhrmann, and will open December 25

Men in Black 3 Interview: Josh Brolin's Brilliance

$

0

As we stated in our Men in Black 3 review, the best thing about the movie is the performance of Josh Brolin -- given the film is fantastic fun, that is truly saying something. Brolin sat down with Movie Fanatic to talk about how one even attempts to capture the nuances of cinematic delivery that is Tommy Lee Jones and even lets us in on a little Gangster Squad scoop.

Men in Black 3: Josh Brolin
Brolin tackled Men in Black 3 because he wants to be remembered not only for a certain type of film. "That’s exactly why I did it. I bet the audience wants to see me in this,” the actor said and laughed.

“It’s totally selfish and personal. I like to have fun. I’m a total goof. Honestly -- as a whole -- serious movies are much more fun to work on than comedies, because you’re compensating for the drama. For me, it sounds so cliché, but I want to keep challenging myself. My goal is to be on my death bed and look back and chuckle. I’m starting to chuckle a little bit right now. It’s a really nice feeling. The guy from No Country did Men in Black and also did Milk and also did W, that’s a really nice feeling.”

Immediately he and co-star Will Smith clicked. “The first time you meet Will, he’s like, ‘Heeeeeeeeeey!’ You’re like, ‘Wow! You serious?’ It’s just funny, man, it’s funny. It’s like going to an insane asylum,” Brolin said, although Brolin admits that getting along with your fellow actor has nothing to do with their mission as performers in a film.

“The chemistry with Will was either going to be there or it’s not. It’s just luck. I remember acting with someone who I didn’t like so much. He said, ‘I feel like you don’t like me.’ I said, ‘I don’t have to like you. I’m an actor.’ Which wasn’t a nice thing,” Brolin said, chuckling. “The truth of the matter is I hadn’t met Will before we went into rehearsals. I had a lot of nerves about getting the Tommy thing right. I had my iPod, watched Men in Black 50 times, but the minute I got together with Will it was seamless. It was like, ‘Thank you God.’”

Effectively portraying Agent K is integral to Men in Black 3 working… and it does. What Brolin has done is created his own character, while uncannily channeling Tommy Lee Jones and his iconic portrayal of the franchise’s beloved veteran agent.

Initially, Brolin wanted to quit. He felt it was a thankless task if you get it wrong and an even more thankless achievement if you get it too right so that it comes off as an impression. “I wanted to call Sony and tell them that they were wasting their money doing this because I can’t do this. All the actor stuff,” he said with a laugh.

But, he found a way. “I was down in Mexico. I rented a hotel room with my computer and my garage band and went through it. You find one thing that sounds good. With (George W.) Bush, his 'U' is said all alike. Or the vowels will be alike. The breathiness and all that… Tommy’s all over. It’s like he’s improvising his voice. It’s still cultivating into something that we won’t know until the end. It’s an instrument that’s been played by nobody that somebody says, ‘Not only do you have to learn how to play this, but make an album in two months that everybody will hear.’”

We couldn’t sit down with Brolin and not ask him about the highly anticipated 1930s-set Gangster Squad. His reasons for doing the film are truly fascinating. “Honestly, first and foremost, I’m proud of L.A. I remember as a kid, being an actor studying in New York, and everybody was kind of ashamed to be from California. California is pretty frickin’ great! So Gangster Squad is a movie about California, about Los Angeles, and I love the idea of that,” Brolin admitted.

Brolin received help from the man who inspired him to act in the first place. “My dad (James Brolin) came to the set one day -- which he usually doesn’t do. He came one day where (John) O’Mara’s (Brolin’s character) house is and we were out on the porch looking out. It’s one of the streets that hasn’t changed. I don’t come to him normally and say, ‘What was it like…’ because he denies his age,” Brolin said and laughed.

“He sat back, and for 45 minutes he started telling me all these stories. It was innocence in his eyes. And I was like, 'That’s why I’m doing this film.' Even though that time in L.A. history was severe, with all the gun battles -- all that stuff -- there was also an innocence to it that I really, really wanted to experience. So, I did -- through my Pop as much as I did through the movie.”

While Wiig is no stranger to feature comedy (in fact, she was responsible for one of the most talked-about comedies of our generation, Bridesmaids), her decision to leave SNL will surely help to solidify her position as a starring comedic force independent of the goofy characters she tended to play on the iconic sketch show.

Men in Black 3 Exclusive: Three Behind the Scenes Clips

Agent K and Agent J are back in action after a decade in Men in Black 3. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones not only rekindle their championed cinematic chemistry first established in 1997’s Men in Black, but are joined in the classic chemistry department by Josh Brolin. As astounding as Brolin is as the young Agent K (as mentioned in our Men in Black 3 review), audiences have to also tribute the brilliance that went on behind the scenes.

Movie Fanatic is proud to premiere the first three of six clips (the final three arrive May 28) that break down pivotal scenes in the sure-to-be blockbuster and take our readers behind the curtain to reveal the magic and how it was achieved.

Our first features a fateful motorcycle chase that begins at old Shea Stadium with a plot point that allows Agents J and K to witness the miracle that was The Mets of 1969 and ends with the villain -- Boris (Jemaine Clement) -- escaping with the Men in Black’s most needed ally in this adventure. How did they do it? Watch and find out…

Jones and Smith begin their Men in Black 3 mystery unraveling by visiting a fish restaurant where not only the wait staff is of another world, but the customers soon reveal themselves to be aliens who, let’s just say, do not care for the Men in Black in the least. Seven-time Oscar winner, makeup artist Rick Baker, has done it again as you can see in the "how did they craft the 'fish' scene?" video.

Lastly, the film culminates with a heart-pounding finale where Brolin and Smith are in a race against time against Boris’ bad self to save the world. Oh, yeah… they’re charged with getting something onto the Apollo rocket that is about to light its candle and fly to the moon. You do not want to be anywhere near that thing when it goes off! Would it be believable that almost none of what you see onscreen is real, except the actors, of course? Check out our third behind-the-scenes vid that shows you how Sony Imageworks gets it done.
