Josh Hamilton Biopic in Development: Casey Affleck to Direct

$

There's a new trend lately of producing biopics about people who are still actively doing the thing that the movie's about. W. was released while George W. Bush was still in office, The Social Network saw Jesse Eisenberg playing Mark Zuckerberg in his early 20's (he is currently in his late 20's), and The Blind Side told the origins of current-day Baltimore Ravens offensive Tackle Michael Oher.

Now, Casey Affleck is set to write and direct a movie about current Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. Hamilton has had a turbulent career, wrought with addiction and alcoholism, and a resurgence that eventually lead to an MVP award in 2010.

Affleck has starred recently in such films as Tower Heist (check out some Tower Heist quotes), and made his directorial debut in the 2010 faux documentary I'm Still Here. His brother Ben has been flourishing as a director himself, with 2010's The Town, and the upcoming film Argo (check out the Argo trailer).

Hamilton will co-produce the film, and Warner Bros. will have a a first opportunity to distribute.

Weekend Movie Preview: June 22, 2012

Four new films arrive this weekend and they could not be more different. Pixar brings out the annual warmer month animated classic with Brave, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley are Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Woody Allen returns to Europe after last summer’s hit Midnight in Paris with To Rome with Love and our sixteenth president unleashes his inner vampire slayer in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: Benjamin Walker is the titular leader who saved the Union as shown first in Seth Grahame-Smith’s book and now Timur Bekmambetov’s latest undead-centered film. After Day Walker and Night Walker, the director has found his next vampire film in the most unlikely of places. The genre mash-up is a visual marvel, as we state in our Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter review.

Brave: Pixar releases their latest film and makes history in the process by having their first female lead. Merida is a Scottish princess living in the medieval Highlands. She is supposed to marry and carry on her parents’ (the king and queen) legacy as heir to the throne. Only thing is she doesn’t want her fate… or does she? The film takes an unexpected, very Disney-like turn… as explained in our Brave review.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World: A romantic comedy that is set to the backdrop of the impending extinction of the human race seems like the most unlikely of storylines to find film success. But in the hands of lead actors Knightley and Carell, this apocalyptic love story has a lot of heart. Check out our Seeking a Friend for the End of the World review for more.

To Rome with Love: Allen has been filming in Europe quite a lot of late. From Match Point to Midnight in Paris, the legendary filmmaker has found increasing success with each stop along his European tour. His latest lands his superstar ensemble cast (Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg) in Rome. Those hoping for a repeat of the magic that was Allen’s last film will be disappointed. But, as pointed out in our To Rome with Love review, the iconic storyteller still has a lot of magic in his bag of cinematic tricks.

Aaron Eckhart to Play the President in Olympus Has Fallen

Today is full of presidential announcements. With Robert Rodriguez having just announced that Charlie Sheen will play the President in Machete Kills, Aaron Eckhart is now set to join the cast of Olympus Has Fallen as the POTUS. I have to say, Eckhart is a tad more believable.

Aaron Eckhart Pic

The film follows a very similar plot line as the upcoming White House Down. It will feature an ex-Secret Service agent, played by Gerard Butler, who must save the White House from a terrorist attack. Olympus Has Fallen was originally slated to begin production this September, but has been fast-tracked in order to compete with White House Down.

Speaking of leaders of the free world, a real-life president got a bad-ass twist today with the opening of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Have you seen it yet?

The Bourne Legacy Release Date Pushed Back One Week

Universal Pictures has announced that it will push back the release date of the summer action film The Bourne Legacy one week, to August 10. The strategy is meant to distance the film from a major action-genre competitor, the Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell.  Check out the Total Recall trailer here.

The Bourne Legacy Star Jeremy Renner

The move also puts Bourne, starring Jeremy Renner, a full month removed from the release of The Dark Knight Rises, which will likely dominate the box office in its first few weeks. The biggest competitor on August 10 will be the Zach Galifianakis/Will Ferrell comedy, The Campaign.

The Bourne Legacy has recently undergone minor re-shoots, though that apparently has nothing to do with the rescheduling. Since you'll have to wait an extra week to see the fourth installment of the Bourne series in theaters, head on over to The Bourne Legacy trailer to keep yourself pumped.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Exclusive: Seth Grahame-Smith Interview

We all know that Seth Grahame-Smith famously wrote a little book called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter that went on to become an international bestseller. What you may not know is that the author also penned the screenplay for the Timur Bekmambetov-directed film that is now out in theaters. Grahame-Smith sat down with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to take us inside the process of turning a successful book into a riveting movie (check out our review) and he tells us why he chose our sixteenth president as his vampire-slaying hero.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter: Benjamin Walker
“He is, in my opinion, the only true American superhero. There are plenty of American heroes, but he is super-heroic,” Grahame-Smith said.

“You can compare him to Peter Parker (Spider-Man) in a way. He’s a young man who’s really got no prospects and can’t really find his way in life, and then he loses someone close to him tragically at an early age. Just when it seems he’s going to go off the deep end and give in, fate calls and bestows upon him some great power. Lincoln, the real man, was super-heroic in the sense that here’s a guy who comes from nothing, no family connections, no money, no education, and yet he’s this big, imposing physical presence and has this incredible mind. Through the sheer power of his will and determination, he’s able to pull himself up by the bootstraps and become the president of the United States and save the country single-handedly. It’s an epic, super-heroic life and it wasn’t that big a challenge to add that genre element to it in the book.”

Grahame-Smith could not be more pleased with the selection and subsequent performance by the onscreen Lincoln, Benjamin Walker. “He was just the most exciting discovery of the whole process and I can’t imagine making the movie without him,” he admitted.

“We needed someone who could disappear into that role and make you forget how absurd the premise is and make you believe that you’re actually watching Abraham Lincoln. That’s exactly, in my opinion, what Ben did.”

When it came to his director, Grahame-Smith was also thanking his lucky stars for someone so visionary to take a chance on a genre-busting film and create something audiences will marvel at. “It was exciting thinking about what he was going to do for this movie visually and creatively,” Grahame-Smith said. “I love Timur, but he’s challenging for a writer because he is so constantly full of ideas and throwing new things at you,” he said and laughed. “You have to be on your toes and you have to be ready to rethink things -- even when you think you’ve rethought them already.”

Adapting his own book proved challenging as to what to add and take out, all in the effort to make a great movie. Each process, screenwriting and novel writing, is a polar opposite. “They’re definitely both different artistic muscles. I grew up being a movie lover first and foremost. I was a voracious reader and I loved reading genre fiction, but movies were the romantic end-all, be-all in my life,” Grahame-Smith said. “Getting to write screenplays is hugely satisfying. But, writing a novel is definitely more enjoyable, I think, in the moment. It’s more of a pure distillation of who you are as a person and as a writer.”

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Actor Benjamin Walker
As a film requires different storytelling beats, Grahame-Smith told us certain specifics were required of him as the screenwriter. “The hardest part was all of the new material that had to be invented. The book’s laid out like a real biography or history book. And the movie, especially because you have a director like Timur, was going to be this big, kind of over-the-top thrill ride of an action movie. In order to service that, you need certain things,” he said.

For one, the Rufus Sewell evil-doer character had to be added. “We didn’t have a central villain in the book, for instance, and we needed to invent that. We didn’t have a thrilling midpoint or a thrilling climax, and we needed to invent those, including the horse sequence and the train sequence. There’s just an extraordinary amount of new material that had to be invented, in addition to the stuff that was cut.”

So, which does he prefer: Writing a novel or a screenplay?

“As the author, you’re used to sort of being the end-all, be-all of storytelling. You’re in charge when you’re writing a book,” Grahame-Smith said. “When you’re writing a movie, the director’s in charge. Writing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the movie, it almost felt like a reinvention or a sequel rather than writing an adaptation of the book.”

Who Should Play Johanna Mason in Catching Fire?

Who should play Finnick Odair in Catching Fire? Let's table that talk for a moment and focus on another key role in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel: Johanna Mason.

Rumors are heating up over which young actress will come board in the role of this former champion, a key ally for Peeta who has a testy relationship with Katniss.

While Kristen Bell has expressed interest in the role, and while we think she'd be PERFECT as Johanna, The Playlist reports that two main contenders have emerged: Mia Wasikowska and Zoe Aggeliki.

Catching Fire Peeps?

Wasikowska is best known for playing Jane Eyre and Alice in Wonderland, while the lesser known Aggeliki will appear in next summer's in R.I.P.D. and also in Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters.

Can you picture either of these actresses as Johanna Mason?

Filming on Catching Fire starts later this year and the movie will hit theaters on November 22, 2013.

Ted Movie Review: One Brilliant Bear

$

Witnessing Ted, it can be described in one phrase: Seth MacFarlane unleashed. Considering the envelopes he pushes on his primetime TV hit Family Guy, you may be asking: How far can he go? The thing is with the R-rating that Ted brings, it’s not that MacFarlane is pushing every envelope he can. It is more that, as he does on his TV show, the comic genius manages to push the limits of hilarity right up to it being too much, without ever going over the line of taste. His humor, regardless of the medium, always possesses wicked wit, heart and the kind of situational comedy that has audiences going, “Oh, my God, he didn’t,” all without ever feeling insulted. Plus, he dishes it out evenly, never sacrificing story and genuine emotion.

Mark Wahlberg Stars in Ted
Ted stars Mark Wahlberg as John while MacFarlane voices the title character -- a teddy bear John received one magical Christmas when he was a lonely young boy. With one wish that Ted was real, John awoke the next day to a live, walking and talking teddy bear… i.e. friend for life!

Fast forward decades and Wahlberg’s John is working at a rent-a-car establishment while he and Ted spend their time getting stoned and drunk on their apartment’s couch. But, things are starting to change as John is about to celebrate his fourth anniversary with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis). Is it time for John to grow up and ask the foul-mouthed, sex-crazed and fellow Flash Gordon-loving teddy bear to hit the road?

MacFarlane not only does the impossible as the writer of the film in achieving one of the funniest films in recent memory, but also delivers in his vocal performance as the titular bear. As fans of Family Guy can confirm, the man voices a half dozen characters on that show. His Ted is in that vein, but character wise, feels completely original. It is impossible to imagine any other voice actor playing the part with such panache and fortitude. The filmmaker even can laugh at himself. At one point Ted says, “I do not sound like Peter Griffin!” Well played, Seth.

Ted is reflective of that time in a person’s life where childhood ways are let go in favor of meeting adulthood square in the eye, and perhaps, even sharing one’s life with an individual that has us looking forward instead of nostalgically back. Ted has eons of soul that one would not expect of a raunchy, foul-mouthed comedy. Evidence of that is handled with the navigating of the relationship that exists between Kunis and Wahlberg’s characters.

The pair are uncanny together and despite the audience having an utter adoration for Ted, they are too pulling for these two lovebirds to make it work. John tries repeatedly to meet Lori’s expectations of him, but somehow Ted riotously interferes. How MacFarlane weaves this web and never forgets to have his viewers falling out of their seat laughing, is a marvel. If Ted is his first cinematic demonstration of this talent’s abilities on the silver screen, Movie Fanatic believes he has the potential to eclipse previous funny film facilitators such as the Farrelly brothers and Judd Apatows of the world.

The Internship Adds Dylan O'Brien to Cast: Filming to Begin Today

Dylan O'Brien, the young star of the Teen Wolf series on MTV, will join the cast of the upcoming comedy, The Internship. The film stars Wedding Crashers duo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn (check out some Wedding Crashers quotes) as two unemployed salesmen who try to get a fresh start in the digital age by becoming interns at a tech company.

O'Brien will play one of the fellow--age appropriate--interns. I'm guessing there will be a lot of "old" jokes thrown at the two comedy vets, and that Vaughn will defend adeptly while Wilson will simply put on some puppy-dog eyes and say "well, that's not very nice."

The Internship is set to begin production today, with Shawn Levy directing, so the addition comes in just under the wire. Fans of Vaughn can see him in the upcoming comedy The Watch with Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill, opening July 27.

Django Unchained Photo Shows Leonardo DiCaprio's Smoky Southern Scoundrel

The Weinstein Company has released a new still from Django Unchained, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie smoking a really long, silly, Southern-y pipe (the pipe represents the importance of the free-labor cultivation of tobacco on the economic stability of the antebellum American South...I'm guessing...).

Leonardo DiCaprio Django Unchained

DiCaprio is playing two wealthy, well-dressed, tobacco-smoking period characters this Christmas, as he will also portray Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. Shave the beard and make that pipe a cigarette, and you've got this photo of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby, which opens the exact same minute as Django Unchained. Weird, right?

Django Unchained tells the revenge story of a slave named Django, who is promised his freedom (and that of his wife) if he can lead a bounty hunter to two wanted men. DiCaprio's Candie is the nefarious plantation owner under whose possession Django's wife is held.

Tarantino's latest opens December 25. For more, check out the Django Unchained trailer.

The Campaign Gets Two New Posters: Brady vs. Huggins

Two new promo posters for The Campaign have debuted courtesy of Yahoo! Movies. The promos take the form of campaign posters for Will Ferrell's Cam Brady and Zach Galifianakis' Marty Huggins.

The Campaign stars Ferrell (Anchorman) and Galifianakis (The Hangover) as two rival candidates for a small-time congressional election. As you would expect, the two characters are...less than brilliant political minds. It seems like the posters are sort of highlighting each candidate's spirit-animal: Brady being a relentlessly patriotic hawk, and Huggins being two goofy pugs.

The film will also star Dylan McDermott and Jason Sudeikis as the two candidates' campaign managers, along with Brian Cox, Jon Lithgow, and Dan Aykroyd. The Campaign opens August 10.

A new TV spot for The Amazing Spider-Man features some insights from director Marc Webb about the IMAX 3D viewing experience. Check it out:

The director promises that some of the more awesome action sequences were shot specifically for IMAX 3D, and that the film's finale will "blow you away." Hopefully Webb isn't speaking in that ironic 'hint-hint' lilt that comic book villains love to use, revealing his plan to actually blow audiences up during the finale in an attempt at world domination.

I'm sure he's not though. You're probably fine. You should see it in IMAX 3D. Seriously. What are the odds?

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard. It opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D (if you dare) on July 3.

The poster and trailer for the new film Robot & Frank has dropped. The film stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon (Jeff Who Lives at Home), Peter Sarsgaard, James Marsden, and Liv Tyler.

The film debuted at Sundance earlier this year, co-winning the James P. Sloan Prize for science-themed films. It follows Langella as a retired thief in a near-future world whose children buy him a helper robot. While the robot is meant to improve the old man's mental and physical health, he ends up using it for rather unsavory purposes.

Robot & Frank marks the directorial debut of Jake Schreier, who previously worked as a commercial director. It will hit theaters August 24. Check out the poster and trailer below:

Speculation has been swirling about who will play Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. While Mia Wasikowska is one of the names that has been thrown around, Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the Alice in Wonderland star will not play the vitriolic tribute.

Wasikowska's reps have apparently denied that she has had any contact with Catching Fire producers, and stated that scheduling conflicts would prevent her from taking the role if she were asked.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set to begin production this summer, with Jennifer Lawrence returning to the role of Katniss. There has been a lot of conjecture surrounding casting choices for the highly-anticipated sequel. Not only are fans anxious to find out who will play Johanna Mason, but also who will be cast as the handsome Finnick Odair. Celebrated writer/director Nora Ephron died last night of pneumonia, due to complications from leukemia, at the age of 71. Efron was one of the most well-liked filmmakers of our time, with actors such as Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, Steve Martin, and Billy Crystal, mourning her passing yesterday by taking to Twitter and various news outlets with the kindest recollections of the New York filmmaker.

Efron's career took off with When Harry Met Sally, which she wrote and associate-produced. She went on to make such classics as Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and 2009's Academy Award Nominated Julie and Julia.

Crystal called her a "brilliant writer and humorist" in a statement to People Magazine. Martin tweeted that "She was the one you wanted to read, to listen to, to be in the company of."

Though her films will live on forever, Nora Ephron will be missed.

Selena Gomez Welcomes Us to Hotel Transylvania

Arriving at the Sony Pictures Animation headquarters, one might think that the area could double for Dracula’s homeland the way the place is decked out. We’re here to check out some never-before-seen clips from Hotel Transylvania and to visit with the exploding superstar that is the film’s young protagonist, Selena Gomez. The event is billed as her character's 118th birthday celebration and we got to catch up with Gomez and check into Hotel Transylvania.

Selena Gomez Picture
The Wizards of Waverly Place star appears as Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) daughter alongside comedy titans Kevin James, Andy Samberg, Jon Lovitz and David Spade. She is blown away at her name appearing on the same marquee as those comedy superstars. “I am very honored to be a part of this cast,” Gomez said.

She got a lot of voice-over booth time with Sandler and found someone who she believes would be a great dad off screen as well as on. “He’s awesome and so cool. He was there almost all of my sessions. To me, he would be a cool dad,” Gomez added. “Somebody who’s really funny and just makes everybody laugh.”

Although Sandler’s Transylvanian accent is spot on, the young actress did not want to try it. “There is a part where I make fun of my dad in the film and that was hard. I’m definitely not as good as Adam when it comes to that,” she said and laughed.

Besides joining a stellar cast, Gomez was also drawn to the chance to still appeal to the family audience that made her career in the first place while still moving into more mature roles. “That’s exactly one of the reasons why I did it. I actually, to be honest, am not that great with animation because I feel like sometimes it’s harder to act with your voice than to act with your actual self,” she said. “But, this was such a great experience. It was a good thing for me to do in that area because I was doing a couple movies that were out of my comfort zone. I felt this was a nice way to go back to that.”

She also found that the character was one that had not been explored yet on screen. “That’s a lot of pressure to be Dracula’s daughter,” Gomez said. “There’s never really been a story that’s been about that and their relationship. I think the way she was structured and the way I read her, was exactly the way I thought it would be.”

Once Gomez dove into the part of Mavis, she discovered many similarities between herself and her character. “I’m in that place -- I’m nineteen,” Gomez said. “I think I’m going through what she is going through, doing things on my own a little more. I am getting a little bit of that freedom. I’m kinda quirky like Mavis too.”

If there is any congruency between her work on Wizards of Waverly Place and Hotel Transylvania with the supernatural, it is pure coincidence. “I guess so. I hadn’t thought about that,” Gomez said.

But, at the heart of it, both entities involve playing into children’s sense of wonder. “I like to bring kids’ imaginations to life a little bit. With my show we were able to be invisible and fly and walk on walls. That is stuff that every kid wishes they had the ability to do. We’re able to bring that alive and I think that’s what we’re doing with this movie too.”

Hotel Transylvania hits theaters September 28.
