Planes Clip: Disney Takes Flight

Walt Disney has released a dialogue-free "trailer" for its newest animated feature, Planes. Unlike the Planes trailer, this clip features no plot reveal, but tons of beautiful footage of the film that is a spin-off of the Cars franchise.

The clip, clocking in at over two minutes, is meant to show off the lush animation, but most importantly -- the score by composer Mark Mancina. It is a sweeping soundtrack and one that, from this preview, certainly belongs among the greats of the Walt Disney library.

Planes follows the story of a crop duster who dreams of flying high with the big boys. As seen in this clip, our little aviator gets that chance as he shares the sky with military jets and Red Bull-type racing fliers. And we're getting the feeling this little plane that could will triumph in his dreams of competing in an aviation race.

The film stars Dane Cook, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese and Top Gun veterans Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer. Look for Planes when it premieres in theaters August 9.

Clerks 3 Script Finished: Kickstarter Idea Scrapped

Kevin Smith is trying to be the anti-Zach Braff. Smith just finished the script for Clerks 3, posting a picture of the completed screenplay on Instagram.

Clerks 3 will be his final film, but partly in response to the backlash to Braff's Kickstarter, Smith has canned his initial idea of crowdfunding the film.

Clerks 3 Script

The script is 137 pages long, and according to the Instagram post, "plays like the Empire Strikes Back of the Clerks trilogy."

As for Smith's opinion on Kickstarter, in a recent Reddit AMA, he said "I'm feeling like that's not fair to real indie filmmakers who need the help. Unlike back when I made 'CLERKS' in '91, I've GOT access to money now - so I should use that money and not suck any loot out of the crowd-funding marketplace that might otherwise go to some first-timer who can really use it."

Good on ya, Kevin. I wonder if he would have felt that way had Braff not broken public opinion on that type crowd funding.

Top 10 Movie Villains of This Century: There Will Be Blood!

$

As we stated in our Star Trek Into Darkness review, the villain portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch is nothing short of evil incarnate. His performance got us thinking about how many utterly dastardly villains movie audiences have witnessed since the turn of the century. One could argue they could go down on the list of best villains in the 100 year history of Hollywood!

Inspired by Cumberbatch and his portrayal of “John Harrison,” Movie Fanatic proudly presents our Top 10 Movie Villains of This Century. Who is number one?

10. Alonzo Harris: Training Day
How good was Denzel Washington in Training Day? He won his second Academy Award, his first for Best Actor. As an LAPD detective, Washington was supposed to be a mentor to Ethan Hawke’s character. But, he wound up revealing his true colors by the middle of the film. Hawke, in turn, had to cull his own personal power to put a stop to the man who was wreaking havoc on the streets of Los Angeles, instead of protecting them.

Denzel Washington Training Day

9. Patrick Bateman: American Psycho
Christian Bale is killer good as a hero, as seen in the Dark Knight franchise. But, in 2000 he announced himself as a killer of a different kind as serial murder Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

The film, based on the bestseller by Bret Easton Ellis, chronicled a man of the 1980s driven by greed while simultaneously fighting his murderous demons. Bale astounded in the role and although talks are revving up for a remake, we would be hard pressed to find an actor on the planet who could capture conflicted evil as Bale did at the turn of the century.

8. Don Logan: Sexy Beast
Ben Kingsley sizzled in Sexy Beast and showed that he’s more than the non-violent icon he played in Gandhi. He may have been the villain in Iron Man 3, but given the twist on that part, we have to look back at his role in Sexy Beast as the best evildoer Kingsley ever portrayed. The way he slithered in and out of the action in the European-set film was nothing short of a good man doing bad brilliantly.

7. Col. Hans Landa: Inglourious Basterds
Christoph Waltz won the first of two Oscars for his work alongside writer-director Quentin Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds. It isn’t easy to steal scenes from Brad Pitt, but in those scenes where Waltz and Pitt interact, it is the Waltz show and Pitt is merely a spectator. There are many performers who have embodied the dearth that is a Nazi, but few manage to make him so likable that the audience hates itself for enjoying what he does onscreen.

Christoph Waltz Inglourious Basterds

6. Magneto: X-Men Movies
Although Ian McKellen played the role quite a few more times than Michael Fassbender, they both perfectly encapsulate the villain born of the pages of the X-Men comics and brought to life in the X-Men movies. Both actors embodied the emotional journey that took him from Nazi concentration camp survivor to man who seeks to use his powers to rule the human world -- all in one big payback for what happened to his parents.

5. Captain Vidal: Pan's Labyrinth
Sergi López i Ayats became an international actor known well beyond his native Spain for his turn in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. His personification of terror is the stuff of legend and although many may try to replicate the depths of his devilish nature, few will achieve the skin crawling moment in cinematic history that was his performance.

4. Anton Chigurh: No Country for Old Men
Oscar must love villains, because Javier Bardem was so frightening in No Country for Old Men that he too won Oscar gold for Best Actor (joining Waltz and Washington so far on this list). His role as the killer who transverses the southwest, flipping coins that decided people’s fate, is still a benchmark for villainy in a Coen brothers film.

No Country for Old Men Javier Bardem

3. Voldemort: Harry Potter movies
Could there have been anyone better cast to portray the man who killed Harry Potter’s parents? When Ralph Fiennes first appeared in any kind of form that was recognizable in the series, even with a flattened face, it was the Shakespearean actor’s talents that gave shape to an at the time shapeless character.

As subsequent chapters of the series went on, Voldemort may have developed more into a “human” form, and through Fiennes Harry Potter fans had a foil for Potter that was worthy of all that was good about the kid with that lightning bolt on his forehead.

2. The Joker: The Dark Knight
Another 21st century villain and once again… Oscar gold! Heath Ledger earned a posthumous Academy Award for doing what seemed like the impossible. When the story was announced and the villain for Bale’s Batman in The Dark Knight was revealed as The Joker, many asked: How can you top Jack Nicholson?

Not only did Ledger make us forget about that perma-grinned Nicholson character, but the late actor forged a whole new level of villainy for all actors to strive for in decades to come. In a word, Ledger was simply… stunning.

Daniel Day Lewis There Will be Blood

1. Daniel Plainview: There Will Be Blood
Daniel Day Lewis may be most known for his role in the Paul Thomas Anderson film for uttering the most famous of the There Will Be Blood quotes: “I drink your milkshake.” But, Lewis was so much more than a catchphrase as Daniel Plainview. The entire film There Will Be Blood does not work without an actor of the highest caliber portraying the man at the heart of the story.

Lewis is one of the best of his, or any, generation and in the process of making There Will Be Blood, the actor dug deep and gave us a source of evil that no one can ever touch. As the years go by in this young century, Lewis’ Plainview will be one hard act to top.

Honorable mentions: Loki: Thor and The Avengers (Tom Hiddleston), O-Ren Ishii: Kill Bill (Lucy Liu), Stuntman Mike: Grindhouse (Kurt Russell), Doctor Octopus: Spider-Man 2 (Alfred Molina), Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting: Gangs of New York (Daniel Day Lewis), Saruman: The Lord of the Rings (Christopher Lee), John Harrison: Star Trek Into Darkness (Benedict Cumberbatch), Mr. Chow: The Hangover movies (Ken Jeong).

A red band trailer for The Hangover Part III has landed and it has us thinking: Shouldn't every The Hangover Part III trailer be a red band trailer? I mean, the series is as raunchy as a comedy franchise can get and this is our first red band teaser? Well, how about that!

Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Burtha and Bradley Cooper return for what is supposedly the final go around for The Wolfpack. The gang we first met several years ago have grown so much. Heck, who are we kidding? They possess as much of a penchant for trouble as ever. Perfect proof of that is seen in what you can gather from these The Hangover Part III stills.

Movie Fanatic has seen The Hangover Part III and although we cannot say anything until our review premieres May 22, let us just say this: It is as different from the previous two as possible. Which... is a very good thing.

The English Teacher Review: Literary License Approved

$

If Daniel Day Lewis is an actor chameleon, than surely Julianne Moore is an actress chameleon. She can be anything from a porn goddess (Boogie Nights) to a conflicted lesbian parent (The Kids Are All Right) to even Sarah Palin (Game Change, for which she won an Emmy and Golden Globe). In The English Teacher, she morphs yet again and elevates a movie that could be average to at least well above average.

The English Teacher is Julianne Moore

Moore stars as the titular character. Seen in The English Teacher trailer, she works in a small town high school, imparting the values of fine literature to her students in the hopes that she reaches even one every few years. Her Linda Sinclair may have never written the great sweeping novel, but in her mind, she is on the cusp of living it. Yet, her life is a series of been theres and done thats.

When she mistakes a former student for a thief one night at an ATM, all that changes. After macing him profusely, she realizes who it is and to paraphrase Casablanca quotes, a beautiful friendship is born. Well… at least a complicated one.

Michael Angarano is Jason Sherwood, a twenty-something man who has returned to his small town to lick his wounds from what he perceives is a failed effort to move to New York City to become a playwright. See, he has written a play. But after rejection after rejection, he headed home to live with his father (Greg Kinnear) to prepare to go to law school and “make something of his life.”

Linda won’t have it. She believes that Jason was the most talented student she ever had, and more importantly, The English Teacher sees Jason’s arrival as the chance for her life to mean something again.

Things get really complicated when she convinces the drama teacher (the always affable Nathan Lane) to stage his play to prove to this young playwright that he has the right stuff.

Director Craig Zisk cut his teeth telling stories of women who are slightly more complicated than they appear on shows such as Weeds, United States of Tara and The Big C. He has his dream actress in Moore and the two combine to craft a modern heroine of the theatrical and literary arts, albeit one who falls for pratfalls that could derail her career and her dreams.

The English Teacher Stars Julianne Moore Greg Kinnear

Supporting cast members lift their game, especially Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror). She portrays her high school actress with dreams of stardom with an innocent panache that masks her real drive to succeed at any cost.

The screenplay by Dan Chariton and Stacy Chariton give Zisk and his cast much to work with, even if it occasionally heads down predictable roads. For example, Kinnear and Moore spar throughout, but the audience can see that romance budding a mile away. But, in a sea of explosive blockbusters that contain little plot, our The English Teacher review reports that although the film may not be as rich as one of Linda’s favorite novels, it sure is a breath of fresh air this summer season.

Bond 24 Director: Christopher Nolan Approached

With Skyfall director Sam Mendes saying that he doesn't want to do direct the next Bond film, the big question has been, "who will direct Bond 24?"

When we asked our readers who they wanted, the overwhelming response was Christopher Nolan. Well, apparently producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson agree.

The pair have approached the Dark Knight director to helm the next Bond film.

Christopher Nolan The Dark Knight Rises Set Pic

The screenplay is currently being written, with the hope of releasing the film some time within the next three years. Daniel Craig will return in the role of 007.

Nolan's next film, Interstellar, is currently slated to premiere November 7, 2014. Do you think Nolan, well-versed in moody thrillers, would make a good Bond director? Let us know in the comments section!

This is the End Clip: Emma Watson Thinks it's Zombies

Up until now, we haven't really been clued in as to what is causing the "cataclysmic events" in This is the End. The reason for that, apparently, is that the characters themselves don't know.

In the new clip from the ensemble comedy, Emma Watson (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) explains her theory: Zombies.

Seth Rogen co-wrote, co-directed, and stars in the film, which follows himself, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruschel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride, all playing themselves, as they experience the end of the world.

Along the way, they learn the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

Michael Cera, Jason Segel, David Krumholtz, Paul Rudd (Anchorman), Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, Kevin Hart, Rihanna, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse also star as themselves.

This is the End will premiere June 12. Watch the This is the End red band trailer for more.

The Avengers 2 Will Feature Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

Joss Whedon has confirmed to IGN that The Avengers 2 will feature Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch!

The director had mentioned in the past that two of his favorite Marvel characters, who happen to be a brother-and-sister team, will be in the sequel, so the confirmation doesn't come as a total surprise.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

“You know, they had a rough beginning," said Whedon of the twins. "They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

Sounds fun!

Meanwhile, Scarlet Johansson and Chris Hemsworth (Thor: The Dark World) are still having contract disputes over the next film, and Robert Downey, Jr.'s future with Marvel is totally up in the air after Iron Man 3 (though he is contracted. to appear in The Avengers 2, and will reportedly have a big role).

Sounds like Marvel Phase 2 is shaping up for a lot of interesting changes. Who do you think should play Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch?

Frances Ha Review: Noah Baumbach in Black and White

$
0
0

Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Fantastic Mr. Fox) co-wrote with star Greta Gerwig and directs Frances Ha in black and white and it’s a fascinating choice. Given the themes of the movie, our Frances Ha review can state that sometimes finding one's chosen path is as clear as well… black and white.

Greta Gerwig Frances Ha

Gerwig is Frances, a woman who is having the time of her life as a modern dancer striving to become part of a prestigious company, while cherishing every moment with her BFF roommate Sophie (Mickey Sumner -- Sting’s daughter!). When Sophie’s boyfriend asks her to move in, she replies with, “I promised Sophie I’d sign a new lease with her.” And thus… her relationship ends.

The only thing is, Sophie is getting serious with her own boyfriend and has committed to moving in with other friends to a nicer apartment. See, Frances’ perception of what her life is at that moment in time is not quite the reality. Her promising dance career is not as solid as she perceives as well. Not sure what to do, she stumbles through the next hour of the film.

As teased in the Frances Ha trailer, Gerwig plays our protagonist pitch perfectly as a mid-twenties woman who is confronted with the painful moment of truth that is deciding what to do next. Fresh out of college, an individual is free to roam our personal universe trying to figure out what we want to do. Yet, by midway through those twenties, a firmer direction should probably be in place. Sophie has it. Her friends have it. Yet, Frances does not.

Over the course of this quirky and fun film, you best believe Frances finds it and the joy is all the audiences’.

Frances Ha Greta Gerwig Mickey Sumner

Gerwig is a delight and yes, she often plays these types of characters and normally an actress would be worried about typecasting. But she crafts such unique differences between the woman she plays in Frances Ha and the ones she crafted for Lola Versus, Damsels in Distress and even Arthur.

Baumbach and Gerwig are a real life couple. Normally, that has no bearing on whether a film is solid or not. Yet, with Frances Ha, one cannot help but notice that lead actress and director are on the same page… literally. Since they wrote the script together, there could not be a more organic presentation of story promise meeting cinematic presentation. To say these two should work together in this same fashion is a gross understatement.

Weekend Movie Preview: May 17, 2013

This time out, the weekend movie preview is all about the Star Trek universe. All the other major studios have stayed clear of this weekend as J.J. Abrams finally premieres his sequel to his 2009 smash hit.

Star Trek Into Darkness arrives in regular 2D, as well as 3D and IMAX. A few smaller movies also open this weekend, including the return of The Squid and the Whale auteur Noah Baumbach with Frances Ha and Julianne Moore dazzles again as The English Teacher.

Star Trek Into Darkness: The crew of the Enterprise is back and in our opinion, better than ever. The gang all knows each other well, after the origins story that was Star Trek. This time out, the villain is "one of us," played by Benedict Cumberbatch. He may, or may not, be Khan... a huge figure in the Star Trek world. You won't get that kind of spoiler from our Star Trek Into Darkness review, but we do state that this is a film that is action packed and should make Trek fans and non-fans happy. It's a popcorn movie, pure and simple.

The English Teacher: Moore returns to the big screen after dazzling us as Sarah Palin in Game Change for HBO. This time out, she's the titular character in a small town high school. She has all but given up on her charges doing anything with their life with literature, when she runs into a former student who she thought the world of. He is back in town after "failing" as a Broadway playwright and the sparks fly comically and dramatically throughout. For more, check out our The English Teacher review.

Frances Ha: Greta Gerwig continues her independent movie streak after her turns in Lola Versus and Damsels in Distress as Frances, a woman who thinks she has it all figured out. Then... life happens and she realizes what our twenties are all about: Self discovery.

Through Gerwig, who teamed up with real life love Noah Baumbach to write the script, we see a side of the growing to love oneself that is rarely captured so eloquently and accurately as is seen in this film. Our Frances Ha review also finds that Baumbach has quite a hand at directing, after years of penning screenplays such as Greenberg and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Anchorman 2 Trailer: It's Kind of a Big Deal

The third "teaser" trailer from Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues has arrived and although it's like the first two, the dialogue is quite different -- and even more hilarious. Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and David Koechner walk towards the camera as lights illuminate them from behind. Then, they each get their moment to pitch why the sequel will be all that. As usual, Carell's Brick character has a little trouble.

This time out, the trailer is subtitled It's Kind of a Big Deal, fresh off the first Anchorman 2 Witches trailer and Anchorman 2 Cream trailer. Is it us, or does the banter get funnier each time? Now, we just need a full trailer!

As most sequels do, Anchorman 2 has upped the ante with explosive additions to the cast. New to the comedy team are Harrison Ford, Sacha Baron Cohen, John C. Reilly (re-teaming with his Step Brothers co-star Ferrell), Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Wow, right?!
