Non-Stop DVD Review: Liam Neeson Jets Home

0
0

There is no question that Liam Neeson knows how to play the reluctant hero, just watch Taken online and that fact is front and center. His latest entry into that category is Non-Stop, and it has arrived on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Non-Stop DVD

Neeson portrays an Air Marshal with a bad marriage and a slight alcohol problem and, generally, does not appear to play well with others. He gets on board a transatlantic flight to London, and just as the plane takes off (as teased in this Non-Stop trailer), he gets a text that someone on the plane will be murdered every 20 minutes until the sender gets millions of dollars deposited in his bank account.

That’s a pretty good plot for an action movie! And it largely works for Neeson and company as this is one solid thriller at 40,000 feet that truly keeps you guessing until the evildoers are revealed. And then, it’s not all champagne toasts -- the thrills truly begin!

What we truly appreciate about this film, as we explained further in our theatrical Non-Stop review, is that creating thrills on an aircraft is a tricky endeavor in this type of film. But, the way that filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has weaved his web, it’ll have the viewer thinking every single passenger on the plane is a suspect, and even Neeson’s character himself!

The cast is also outstanding including Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery and recent Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (recently named to the Star Wars: Episode VII cast). They all bring their A-game to craft a surprisingly taut thriller.

When it comes to bonus features on the Non-Stop home video release, the first one that truly stands out reflects what we previously said about creating a true thriller on board an aircraft flying over the Atlantic Ocean.

Non-Stop Star Liam Neeson

Non-Stop Action takes audiences behind the scenes with Collet-Serra as you get a ringside seat into how he managed to create such tension on a 20 foot by 30 foot set in the shape of a cylinder.

Uber-producer Joel Silver also chimes in, and having his insight is priceless given his long list of action hits (including The Matrix). And stunt co-coordinator Mark Vanselow gives us new appreciation for the choreography of action, especially given the confines of the interior of a jet airliner.

We also appreciated the featurette Suspense at 40,000 Feet as the cast, including Neeson and Moore, give us their account of the filmmaking process for Non-Stop and what it was about this unique concept that had them sign on immediately.

Watch Non-Stop online and prepare to take off on some serious thrills!

Non-Stop
Liam Neeson is an Air Marshall in this thriller from producer Joel Silver. It is a thrill a minute, and also manages to add a murder mystery element to the action on a plane subgenre of film.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Exclusive: What Would Gerard Butler & Craig Ferguson Train?

0
0

We caught up with How to Train Your Dragon 2 stars Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson for an exclusive video interview and asked them if they could train anything like Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) does Toothless, real or fictional, what would it be?

You have to hear their answer and the discussion that ensued!

As you can see in the How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer, Ferguson is back as Gobber and Butler is back as the leader of the community, Stoick, who also is Hiccup's father.

Stoick is determined in the latest picture to truly pass the regal torch to his boy. Of course, things have changed on Berk -- largely due to Hiccup’s ability to train his and other dragons.

There is no way to catch up with these two Scottish actors without getting their opinion on how Scots have been portrayed in the movies.

“I think it’s changed,” Ferguson said. “It used to be just mad drunks! Then Braveheart came along and it was the warrior poet. Now, I think it’s a mixture.”

Butler likes that you can have a Scottish voice now in a movie and there doesn’t have to be an explanation. “There doesn’t need to be a caricature behind it,” Butler admitted.

Be sure to get all sorts of ready for the big sequel and watch How to Train Your Dragon online

Fury Featurette: First Look at Brad Pitt Starring Film Debuts at E3!

0

As part of the E3 presentation for the game World of Tanks, Sony debuted the first footage in a featurette for David Ayer’s Fury over on IGN.

The film follows the “family” that is a tight-knit tank unit in the waning days of World War II. They’re exhausted. They’re stretched thin… and this war is not over yet.

Fury is from David Ayer (writer of Training Day, writer-director of End of Watch) and features an all-star cast.

Brad Pitt is joined by Michael Pena, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Shia LaBeouf and Jon Bernthal in an emotional journey that shows us World War II as we’ve never seen before. As stated in the above featurette, this film was shot with real film cameras to give it that realistic feel that is worthy of the men who served during World War II.

Check out the Fury Synopsis:

April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

Look for Fury in theaters November 14.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Drax & Star Lord Posters Revealed!

It's been a character poster week for the Marvel heroes who are making their movie debut on August 1. First we got that Rocket Raccoon and Groot poster, and then the Gamora poster premiered for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Today, two posters make their premiere, and to paraphrase one of them from the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, "They're kind of a big deal."

Chris Pratt's Star Lord and Dave Bautista's Drax each make their character poster debut, and that means now all five of the Guardians of the Galaxy have made the leap to character poster legacy.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows five of the most unlikely heroes in the Marvel canon as they come together to be the universe's last hope. It features an all-star cast beyond Pratt and Bautista that includes Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Benecio del Toro and the voices of Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Groot.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Poster

But, what we can discern from the poster is that this looks to be a combination of animation and live action that takes our favorite underwater soul and sends him up on dry land.

We do know that the film will feature the popular television show's cast, joined by a little actor known by the name of Antonio Banderas.

Stay tuned as more details emerge from this animated family film. Until then, why not watch Finding Nemo online for another underwater animated gem!

The Penguins of Madagascar Trailer: It Just Feels Right

The first trailer has premiered for The Penguins of Madagascar! The film takes our favorite characters from those Madagascar movies and gives them their first solo adventure. And this time out, they have some help from some all-star names like Benedict Cumberbatch!

Cumberbatch plays Wolf, the leader of an elite force of animals who live to ensure the safety and freedom of all animals who wish to be free.

How do you think that will sit with our favorite penguins who think that they are the elite animal force in the world!

The above trailer also features some fantastic gags, including one of Skipper chewing cheese doodles while Cumberbatch’s Wolf is trying to explain what they do.

Might we say, this teaser is about as funny as the one that premiered earlier today -- the Dumb and Dumber To trailer? Is that sacrilege?

Or maybe, we’re just really excited for the November 26 release of The Penguins of Madagascar

Sin City A Dame to Kill For Trailer: Outlaws Become Heroes

Hot on the heels of that Eva Green banned poster, the latest Sin City: A Dame to Kill For trailer is here and it paints a pretty picture. Well, maybe visually pretty, but the drama on screen is far from attractive -- and that's just how we like it.

Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are back together to bring Miller’s graphic novel to the big screen. The film intertwines two of Miller’s tales into one explosive cinematic experience.

Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson are back, and they’re joined by newbies Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

You think things got rough and tumble in the first film (which can be seen when you watch Sin City online), that is merely scratching the surface of the evil that lurks on the streets of the aptly named Sin City.

Look for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in theaters August 22.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit DVD Review: Chris Pine Takes Over

0
0

Jack Ryan is one of our 13 top movie spies, and like another -- James Bond -- he’s had several actors portray him. The Tom Clancy literary spy gets a new action hero to fill out his highly educated self with Chris Pine in the reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The film is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download. So, is it worth the Ryan redo?

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit DVD

For one, director Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the villain) has completely rebooted the story in the sense that his Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is an origins story for our hero.

As teased in the Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit trailer, we meet Pine as a graduate student in London who, like everyone else, is rocked by the events of 9/11 he sees playing out live on television. He promptly enlists and heads to Afghanistan to fight for America.

How he comes to be in the CIA is essentially laid out in a fantastic scene between Pine and Kevin Costner. The veteran actor portrays Ryan’s mentor and it’s a terrific onscreen relationship that we look forward to seeing in more future chapters -- as stated in our theatrical Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit review.

The adventure and thrills part of the story arrive as a cyber threat has emerged from Russia involving Branagh’s character. And the scenes between Branagh and Pine are electric. They are actually only eclipsed by the moments where Pine’s onscreen wife (Keira Knightley) joins them. There is a war going on and it’s through words. It’s fantastic, and as directed by Branagh, it truly works and gives us a new flavor of suspense for the character of Ryan.

This is a promising first chapter of a new Ryan series, and we hope that everyone involved gets more chances.

When it comes to bonus features on the Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit home video release, we have to start with the audio commentary by Branagh and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Having Branagh’s take on his choices and the making of the movie, while watching it, is truly special.

The Jack Ryan: The Smartest Guy in the Room featurette is outstanding, and as anyone can say who has either read Ryan’s stories on Clancy’s pages or seen any of the movies featuring Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin or Ben Affleck, he is painted as the wisest soul at the CIA -- and that is exactly what sets him apart and why audiences adore this character.

Chris Pine Kevin Costner Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit

Then, our director gets his own featurette and it is one that focuses on his turn as a Russian villain. Sir Kenneth Branagh: The Tsar of Shadow Recruit is an acting lesson in how to not only nail a foreign accent, but how one gives a villainous performance that is three-dimensional.

And in the vein of the smartest man at the CIA feeling that permeates this entire series, the featurette Jack Ryan: A Thinking Man of Action shows why fans have adored this hero for over three decades. Especially after seeing this particular incarnation, it explores why it is that Ryan is so different from any of the action heroes or spy characters that have come before.

Intrigued? We bet you are! Be sure to watch Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit online right now!

The Boxtrolls Trailer: Released & Riveting!

The filmmakers who brought us the magical worlds of Coraline and ParaNorman have crafted another visual stunner that could very well be the family movie of the fall.

The Boxtrolls tells the story of a world that exists beneath a city, much like the one you live in. The film’s latest trailer has arrived and it delves much deeper into the story than the first The Boxtrolls trailer.

It follows how these trolls have raised an orphan boy who goes by the name of Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright). He has lived a happy life below the city streets in underground caverns. Things seem to be fine in this world and the one above it, until the evil Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) decides that it’s time to snatch up all those trolls and put an end to this scourge.

The Boxtrolls lands in theaters September 26 and features an incredible voice cast beyond the Oscar winner in Kingsley. Elle Fanning (she who gave us a few fantastic Maleficent quotes) is joined by Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.

To get an idea of the visual mastery audiences are in store for when The Boxtrolls hits theaters, watch Coraline online and we’re sure The Boxtrolls will shoot onto your must-see list for fall.

Dumb and Dumber To Photos: Harry & Lloyd Start a Fire

Dumb and Dumber To has fans of the 20-year-old movie beyond excited to see what Harry and Lloyd have been up to.

Hot on the heels of that Dumb and Dumber To trailer that premiered this morning, we have some fresh stills that further fill in the blanks.

We love the shot of Jim Carrey, all bearded up like he's in Cast Away. See, he's been in a mental institution for the last 20 years. Watch the trailer and you'll see why!

Our favorite of the new stills is the one of Harry and Lloyd getting ready to light a whole slew of firecrackers. Knowing how "dumb" these two are, how do you think that is going to go?

Watch Dumb and Dumber online and let us know if you think that Dumb and Dumber To has any chance of giving us better lines than we got with those Dumb and Dumber quotes from the first one!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer: Retaliation Is Coming

0
0

Is it us, or can July 11 not get here soon enough? That is when Dawn of the Planet of the Apes lands in theaters. And to add to our anticipation, 20th Century Fox has released a new trailer and its title is quite ominous!

Retaliation is coming, it appears, and we're thinking it's apes doing the retaliating against the humans. Given what we took away (check out our 9 things we learned from the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes footage), the apes don't necessarily want a battle against Gary Oldman and the humans. But, that is exactly what Oldman wants. And judging by this Dawn of the Planet of the Apes clip, that is exactly what we get.

Andy Serkis is back in the mo-cap suit as Caesar, and Oldman is joined by Jason Clarke and Keri Russell in the "human" cast. And yes, there even is a bit of a James Franco cameo! You can even see a part of it in the above trailer!

Apes with Shotguns!
You know, humans pretty much should throw in the towel when the apes master the art of shooting a shotgun!

Ruby Dee Dead at 91: Screen Legend Blazed a Path

Screen icon Ruby Dee has passed away after living the fullest of lives in her 91 years. She and husband Ozzie Davis blazed a trail for all those that would come after her, and besides her work on the silver screen and stage, she was integral and a stalwart during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

Although her work spanned much in terms of greatness, we’ll always remember her most for her role in A Raisin in the Sun opposite Sidney Poitier (photo above).

She played dozens and dozens of characters, and made quite the impression on younger audiences in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever.

Although her family confirmed her death at the age of 91, they did not disclose any other details.

Take a look at other screen stars we have lost in 2014.

Birdman Trailer: Michael Keaton Soars!

Michael Keaton gave us some of the most iconic Batman quotes that exist, so he is no stranger to portraying a man who dons a suit and becomes super.

That’s why the arrival of his latest film trailer for Birdman is so ironically real.

Keaton portrays a former Hollywood superstar who was best known for playing the titular superhero, and to say he has slowly lost his mind (and his career) is a gross understatement.

He is now trying to get his career back on track with a Broadway production and, by the looks of the above trailer, his mind too. That's why we also love the use of the song Crazy throughout this trailer.

Birdman also stars Emma Stone, Zack Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Amy Ryan and Naomi Watts and will hit theaters October 17.

The film has also debuted its iconic-looking poster!

The Signal Exclusive: Director Dishes Magnificent Mind-Bending Movie!

William Eubank has hit a home run with the sci-fi thriller The Signal. We got to talk to Eubank about the mind-blowing flick about a group of young twenty-somethings (including Brenton Thwaites and The Quiet Ones star Olivia Cooke) who are aggressively following a signal they are receiving on the computer and phones that is leading them out into the desert in Nevada.

What happens next… well, just see the movie.  Let’s just say they run into Laurence Fishburne and everything is far from what it seems.

The Signal Poster

“It’s been a crazy ride that is for sure,” Eubank said in our exclusive phone interview of the entire The Signal experience. The film opens June 13 and is one don’t-miss movie!

Movie Fanatic: Where on Earth did this idea come from? And at the same time as you are starting to talk about it to the press, how do you talk about it because it seems like anything you say can be a spoiler?!

William Eubank: That is the question! Basically, I wanted to make a movie that kind of gets in the idea of Area 51 and I put the audience through all this stuff and the Area 51 stuff is kind of like a left hook. You don’t take all the preconceptions about Area 51 and some of those things are at the start of the film. You arrive at it somewhere else at the film, and as an audience member, you can go, “That could be the explanation that I’m looking for.”

Movie Fanatic: We also have a star in the making here with Brenton (Thwaites). What was it about him that he was your guy?

William Eubank: Here’s the thing. I feel like as a director, your first job is to cast well. The second job is to manage all the trees in the forest and make sure the performances are tracked with where we are in the context of the entire film, but not to manage a performance. What it is about Brenton is he’s such a talented actor, I’m not thinking about any of that. The whole cast was so talented, but they’re really good people and being good people go so far, especially when they’re playing characters that you want the audience to think of as good people.

Movie Fanatic: Did you have to pinch yourself when Laurence Fishburne said yes?

William Eubank: That was so awesome to get that call that he was interested. He read the script and just loved it. He told me he couldn’t put the script down. He didn’t know anything about me or anything. And to watch him do his thing and to imagine that that was who we always wanted for this character through Laurence’s ability, it feels really good, man, I’ll tell you that. That was the most satisfying experience, ever. Brenton and Olivia and I, we’re just finding our way. To have someone like Laurence -- who is so accomplished -- there setting a standard, sure makes us feel that what we are working on is legitimate.

Movie Fanatic: There is so much that is mind blowing in terms of storytelling and the look of The Signal. What was the one thing in this movie that you achieved that decades from now, you’ll still be giving yourself a fist bump for?

William Eubank: My brother (Carlyle, who is also a co-writer) and I built these trampoline-type things with the idea of it working for a real practical effect, and this one day, the wind was so gnarly and a sand storm came up that I cannot even tell how you crazy it was. We couldn’t shoot! We had a one-hour window at the end of the day where the sun came through the sandstorm and we were able to get the shot. It was such a crazy moment. We got it done. I never thought it was going to work, and that moment, I will never forget.

Since the film has Fishburne, and kind of reminds us of another one of his greats... watch The Matrix online and you'll see what we mean when you witness The Signal on the big screen!

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Exclusive: Kit Harrington & Djimon Hounsou Dish "Amazing" World

0

How to Train Your Dragon is one of those movies that is utterly beloved. When Kit Harrington and Djimon Hounsou signed on to join the series for How to Train Your Dragon 2, they immediately felt the love.

For Hounsou, it meant a connection with his child. “My son, it means the world,” he said. “And all actors, it’s a trait that we all want to be part of something like this.”

For Harrington, who we recently caught up with for Pompeii, he is proud of the fact that he is part of one of those pop culture moments that guides generations into their future.

“Kids grow up with these now and they’ll look back and say, ‘Do you remember Dragon, Dragon 2 (and possibly) Dragon 3?’ To be a voice in one of those and to be a part of a kid growing up is amazing to me,” Harrington said.

As you can see in the How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer, Harrington stars as Eret, a studly man who catches the eye of Kristen Wiig’s Ruffnut, and Hounsou is Drago -- our villain!  Djimon Hounsou & Kit Harrington Photo

Both salute the director Dean DeBlois, who also wrote the two movies, for having the vision that made this world transcend animated features to become just simply... an adored movie.
