The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sold itself on saying that our hero was facing his “greatest battle.” And that could not have been truer in that Andrew Garfield returns to the Spidey suit and fights off a trio of villains, the Green Goblin, Electro and The Rhino.
As The Amazing Spider-Man 2 makes its way onto DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, it’s an opportunity to witness some of those explosive action sequences once again. Or if you missed it in theaters earlier this summer, it’s a chance to see the next chapter in the Marc Webb Spider-Man saga.
Garfield is back, and so is Emma Stone as his lady love, Gwen Stacy. And as you can see from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 extended trailer, Jamie Foxx is Electro, Dane DeHaan is Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti is The Rhino and they all want Spidey splattered. But, we caution, it is a little more complicated than just a three-way war waged against our hero.
This is primarily a Spider-Man against Electro film and it clearly sets up what is coming next in the expanding Spider-Man universe at Sony… a Sinister Six movie. And that is one element that is teased on the bonus features that truly run the gamut.
Say what you will about the movie, it had mixed reviews upon its theatrical opening (check out our theatrical The Amazing Spider-Man 2 review). But it is a thrill ride and quite the accomplishment for Webb and his film series that now could stretch to four movies instead of the normal trilogy. This is a bigger picture flick, with clearly everyone at Sony having a bigger prize in mind. Think of it like The Empire Strikes Back (although nowhere near as powerful). It’s a middle chapter that is clearly heading somewhere. So, as an audience, you just need to have patience.
But, back to those bonus features. They are impressive and for fans of Spider-Man and appreciators of the art of blockbuster filming that employs thousands of special effects shots, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 DVD and Blu-Ray is a virtual film school of lessons on how to create a franchise film using the latest technology and even some of the oldest technology that exists.
Leading the way for us is the Peter meets his father deleted scene. With the fantastic opening scene to the movie itself, we get more insight into Peter’s father and that deleted scene where he meets him is nothing short of sublime.
That is just one of three other deleted scenes (on the DVD, there are nine total on the Blu-Ray!) and we cannot recommend checking them out enough. Webb had some tough choices with what to keep and what to cut and he chose wisely. But, it’s nice with the home video formats nowadays -- we get to see what didn’t make the theatrical version!
And as this has been Webb’s baby from the beginning, watching his The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with his audio commentary is informative, entertaining and often insightful in terms of where this franchise will go next.
The bonus feature documentary The Wages of Heroism: Making The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gets to the heart of Webb’s series and its focus on the costs to Peter Parker when he dons the suit and becomes the webbed wonder. They are high, as we’ve already seen in the first film with the death of his uncle and the disappearance of his father.
Lessons Learned: Development and Direction focuses on the entire filmmaking team and how they were laser-focused on making this not only the best sequel they could make to The Amazing Spider-Man, but they sought to make it “the best Spider-Man yet.”
Many of the action sequences will leave you wondering how they did that with the busy streets of New York City as the backdrop, particularly that Times Square sequence where Electro first battles Spider-Man.
Go inside the action of filming in The City with the impressive featurette Heart of the City: Shooting in New York.
Then, there is the introduction of the three villains. Pundits, before seeing the film we might add, felt it was too crowded to have three villains in one movie. The documentary short Triple Threat: Attack of the Villains shows how Webb and his team expertly orchestrated how to insert Electro, the Green Goblin and Rhino into their story without it distracting from the emotional pull of a riveting story.
Lastly, you have to check out Webb talking about this expanding world in the Sinister Six bonus feature. For those who are fans of this idea, it is pure gold.

Dane DeHaan is almost unrecognizable as The Green Goblin!
