Magic Mike Clip: It's Raining Men

Uch, how many different pictures and videos of Channing Tatum without a shirt can the web handle? Apparently tons. Yet somehow the Youtube videos of me in a pea coat slow-roasting a brisket only have 4 hits. What gives, internet?

A new clip from Magic Mike shows Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, and the rest of the strippers beginning a routine to the song It's Raining Men.

The clip was teased by the recent Magic Mike poster showing the cast posing shirtless.  The film tells the tale of a male stripper who shows a young protege the ropes while seeking a life outside of stripping with his protege's sister, and is partially based on Tatum's real-life experience as a male dancer.

Tatum has seen a meteoric rise to stardom recently, starring in numerous films this year, including 21 Jump Street and The Vow (check out our The Vow quotes page). His latest, Magic Mike, comes out June 29.

Wes Anderson Interview: Moonrise Kingdom's King

Filmmaker Wes Anderson has a passionate following that awaits his next work with bated breath. He’s back onscreen with Moonrise Kingdom and the Anderson legion followed. The film set a per-screen average record at the box office this weekend and look for it to gain even more traction in the coming weeks from word of mouth. For a writer-director whose films truly feel old school, imagine how much fun it was to sit down with Anderson via Skype to talk about his latest triumph as he takes us inside his creative process.

Wes Anderson on the Moonrise Kingdom Set
Movie Fanatic: There is such intricate detail in Moonrise Kingdom. Was it more difficult to craft this film than your others?

Wes Anderson: It took me a long time to write it! I spent about a year trying to get the script figured out. I wanted to get the feeling recreated from my own memories. But, I couldn’t figure out how to put that into the story. It was only when I asked Roman (Coppola) to come help me and it took about a month, but it became this amazing script. I think the big thing after that is the casting, particularly finding these two leads. We set aside a lot of time to search for them. We trusted that one day they would walk in the door and they did. I felt with each of them, when they appeared, I had the feeling, “This is it.” We got them.

Movie Fanatic: Why did you set the story of two tweens falling in love and running away in 1965?

Wes Anderson: My idea is that the movie was set in a moment right before everything is about to change. The kids, their lives are about to change because they are at a threshold moment in their own lives, and the whole country is there too. When these kids are 18, they are going to be in a radically different America. Her house is at a place called Summer’s End, and I felt there was a little metaphorical thing going on there.

Movie Fanatic: Moonrise Kingdom feels extremely personal...

Wes Anderson: I remember what it felt like to feel like you were in love at that age -- how overwhelming that was, how blindsided I felt by that. It made real life feel like a fantasy at that age. I was hoping we would be able to recreate that.

Movie Fanatic: As evidenced in this film, your filmmaking is quite deliberate. Given that fact, is there room for improvisation?

Wes Anderson: Usually, I’m not one who has actors improvising lines in my movies. But, I feel like they bring the characters to life completely and I’m always kind of surprised what the actors do do together. What I try to do is make the world a new place for the audience to experience. It is also an invented world for the actors to play the scene in and hopefully give them something to work with in their environment.

Movie Fanatic: Speaking of improv and someone who is a king of it... Bill Murray. You’ve used Bill many times in your career (Rushmore, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Royal Tenenbaums) and of course Moonrise Kingdom. How does that work with your precise filmmaking style?

Wes Anderson: One of the things I like about him actually is his feeling of anarchy [laughs]. My last film was animated (The Fantastic Mr. Fox), which in many ways is the most control you can have in a movie. You can really always shape it. The whole subject matter had to do with wildness -- that was what I was excited about with that story. That’s something that I like about Bill Murray, his wildness. He’s also just one of my favorite actors, period. I met him as his fan in the first place. Making a movie is a good place to have allies. You’re usually up against something that doesn’t want to get done. Bill Murray’s someone you can rely on to help you force it to happen.

Bruce Willis and Edward Norton in Moonrise Kingdom
Movie Fanatic: Your stories seem to inhabit the world of outsiders. Yet, they still feel like ensemble pieces. How do you balance that, especially in Moonrise Kingdom?

Wes Anderson: This movie seems to be about a pack of lone wolves. There are the two main characters, the girl and the boy. The girl is very isolated and in her own family, and the boy has his own issues as he’s orphaned. Edward Norton is alone. He’s dedicated to this little scout troupe because I don’t think he has anybody himself. And the same thing applies to Bill Murray and the Frances McDormand characters. They’re together, but appear alone. That always has an appeal to me and I don’t know why. I’ve always been drawn to those kinds of stories.

A big-screen version of the hit jukebox musical Jersey Boys is being planned, and Jon Favreau is reportedly at the top of the list of possible directors.

Jon Favreau Pic

Jersey Boys tells the story of the 1960's rock group, The Four Seasons, from the band's inception, to its rise to fame and eventual breakup. Jukebox musicals have been met with immense success in recent years, beginning with the phenomenon that was Mama Mia! Another jukebox musical stage production-turned film, Rock of Ages, is coming out June 15 (view the Rock of Ages trailer for a look).

Favreau, who began his career as an actor, has made a name for himself in the director's chair in the last decade or so. He has directed Elf (check out some Elf quotes), Cowboys and Aliens and the first two Iron Man movies (though he won't be returning for Iron Man 3). Favreau has never directed a musical.

Jersey Boys does not yet have a production schedule or release date.

Safe House Exclusive Interview: David Guggenheim Writing Wizardry

When David Guggenheim sat down to write Safe House, he was still a senior editor for Us Magazine. Now, he has had a number one movie under his belt starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds and has become the most in-demand screenwriter in the business. His next two screenplays, 364 and Narco Sub, are being directed by Ron Howard and Tony Scott, respectively. Guggenheim phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive chat in celebration of Safe House’s Blu-Ray debut to talk screenwriting, working closely with Washington and if his writing process has changed now that his future work will be referred to as, “From the writer of Safe House.”

Safe House Star Denzel Washington
The story of Safe House was born from the screenwriter’s passion for all things cinematic espionage. “There’s James Bond references actually sprinkled through the movie,” Guggenheim proudly stated.

“I had known of this idea of a safe house. It was a cool, provocative title. There’s this idea that you’re supposed to go there to be safe and what happens when your safety place turns out to be the most dangerous place? Then it was like, ‘Who works there?’”

He envisioned the Reynolds character as a rookie who had not a single moment of field work in his professional arsenal. “When I wrote it I was at a job that I wanted to get out of, and I could commiserate with his feelings of wanting to prove himself. Once I had that hook, I decided to make it more of a two-hander and have it be, ‘Let’s have this freshman carry around this vet.’ What is their dynamic? They have opposing points of view on the same job. Eventually, they will rub off on each other and it becomes a mentor-protégé relationship,” he said. “Once I had that, I had the movie.”

Guggenheim’s experience ironically mirrored that of Reynolds' character and his relationship with Washington came off with the esteemed actor serving as a story mentor. The Oscar winner is a hands-on part of the creative process when he signs on to act in a film. “When I heard he was reading it, that was good enough for me,” Guggenheim said and laughed. “When he decided to do it and he had notes and wanted to talk to me about it, then all of a sudden you’re in a room with him for four days -- it’s intense. He's one of the greatest actors of our time and he knows more about character than anybody. He could not have been cooler.”

Safe House features some of the most spectacular action sequences of the year, a task that proved quite challenging for Guggenheim to compose.

“Writing action is the most tedious aspect of writing a script. It requires the most choreography. You have to truly visualize what’s going on while still selling all the character moments in that scene,” Guggenheim said. “I tend to write really fast -- I think that helps when you’re writing action because you’re composing at the speed the scene is going [laughs]. It comes across as fast and visceral, which is how I write. Also, I don’t overtly plan them because the characters don’t know which way they’re going to turn, why should I know? That’s where I think the excitement comes from.”

Safe House Blu-Ray
When the film first arrived, Safe House did well, but it didn’t hit number one at the box office until its second week -- something that Guggenheim didn’t mind at all. “That was cooler than having it be number one in the first week,” he said. “I don’t know much about tracking and all that. I knew it was a busy weekend. I heard we were going to make $25 million. I went to the midnight screening and it was sold out. I went, ‘Oh my God!’”

As for working with Howard and Scott on his upcoming screenplays, Guggenheim tells us that after being in a room with Washington, everything else Hollywood-wise should be a breeze. “Once you get through working with Denzel, everything else is much easier. Ron Howard is a genius and so is Tony,” he added. “For me, the greatest opportunity that’s arisen through all this is meeting other writers. I am more in awe of the writers. They are the people that I have worshiped.”

Rock of Ages Featurette: We Built This Movie on Rock & Roll

Director Adam Shankman discusses what it was like to direct Rock of Ages in this new featurette.

Rock of Ages, a jukebox musical based on the Broadway play of the same name, stars Julianne Hough (Footloose), along with Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Cruise, and many others.

Shankman has directed, produced, or choreographed numerous musical films, including Step Up 3D and Hairspray, and the team he assembled for Rock of Ages seems to have surpassed expectations. The film uses popular rock hits from the 1980's as a thread through the story of a waitress and a bussboy who fall in love.

Brand, who hosted this year's MTV Movie Awards (have you seen the Dark Knight Rises footage that aired during the awards?), is not new to playing a character living the glamorous rock and roll lifestyle, as he portrayed Aldous Snow in the 2008 comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (take a look at some of his hilarious Forgetting Sarah Marshall quotes).

Rock of Ages hits theaters and IMAX June 15.

The Blu-Ray and DVD combo pack that Movie Fanatic received had some astounding bonus features beyond director commentary.

The highlight has to be the 360 Degrees of John Carter. This allows the viewer to experience every minute detail of the filmmaking process to further understand how the magic came to be. For fans of the character that has been around for a century, the 100 Years in the Making feature is a don’t-miss. Black Panther Movie: In the Works from Marvel?

This just in: super heroes are very big at the box office these days. Like, record-breaking big.

So how will Marvel continue to milk this big screen gold mine? By expanding its reach as much as possible, according to Latino Review, which has broken the news that a Black Panther movie is in the works.

Black Panther Photo

The website reports that four different sources have confirmed plans to release a film based on the first African-American comic book character, likely some time in 2014.

The Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and first appeared in a 1966 issue of Fantastic Four. He possesses an incredible sense of smell and originated as the chief of the Panther Tribe of the advanced African nation of Wakanda. He later joined the Avengers.

Marvel bought the movie rights to the character in 2005 and Wesley Snipes was at one point attached to portray him. We somehow doubt that will be the case this time around.

But the question now remains: Might the Black Panther play some role in The Avengers 2?

Prometheus Exclusive Interview: Idris Elba Is Our Captain

Idris Elba is on quite a roll. After winning the 2012 Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role on TV’s Luther, he boarded the Ridley Scott cinematic spaceship that is Prometheus as the ship's captain. After filming the super-secretive film for months, the UK actor admits exclusively in our interview that it’s nice to finally be able to open up about the maybe prequel to Alien (Is it the best sci-fi film of all time?). But, in our exclusive interview, he reports he still cannot say too much in terms of plot. “I feel good that I can talk about it, but I still don’t want to say too much,” Elba said and laughed.

Prometheus Star Idris Elba
Elba phoned Movie Fanatic and does take us inside the Scott experience and tells us why the director nicknamed him “Third Take Charlie.”

Movie Fanatic: So what’s it like to finally be able to talk about Prometheus?

Idris Elba: [Laughs] It’s been shrouded in secrecy, and for good reason. Nowadays audiences want to know more and they want it quickly. I think Prometheus is a good example of that. You can still not tell anybody anything and get a lot of interest for a film. But, it has a lot to do with Ridley Scott and the amazing cast they’ve put together.

Movie Fanatic: Was it nice as an actor to just go to work knowing you can do your thing without the world giving the production a running commentary?

Idris Elba: Yeah, you have no idea. We spent a lot of good and dedicated time to make this film special and a really good experience for the audiences. It always feels cheap to have people saying, “This is what it is. This is what happens.” I want you to see what we did when we were in Pinewood (Studios) that whole time pulling this stuff together.

Movie Fanatic: Have you ever filmed a movie at Pinewood?

Idris Elba: That was my first one.

Movie Fanatic: What did it mean to you as an actor to finally work at the legendary Pinewood?

Idris Elba: It’s almost an “I’ve arrived” moment for actors because you know coming through the gates, the legends of our industry have been there. I was no different. As soon as I walked in it, I was like, “I love it here.”

Movie Fanatic: What did you find about the Ridley Scott experience that maybe surprised you?

Idris Elba: Ridley Scott is not the most public figure. He keeps quiet. But, on set, he’s so giving. I had millions of great conversations with Ridley Scott. You feel like you should be paying him to be sitting with him soaking in all that experience. It’s like getting a master class. He would talk about each character and what you were saying. He would talk about how this scene would function within the movie, which is context that you don’t typically get.

Movie Fanatic: You have had great success across various mediums from stage to screen and TV, now with Luther. Is variety the spice of life to keep those muscles fresh?

Idris Elba: It is, in the past it could be proved dangerous for some actors to move around as much as I do. But, I think that’s part of what keeps artistic juices firing. It keeps me challenged to be able to play different roles across mediums. I grew up watching the De Niros of the world. The Jack Nicholsons of the world -- these fearless actors who reinvent themselves every time. For me, keeping that variety open keeps you in a long career.

Movie Fanatic: The cast of Prometheus is so top notch. Could you describe the experience on set, specifically working with Michael Fassbender -- another UK actor whom we just adore?

Charlize Theron and Idris Elba in Prometheus
Idris Elba: The set was as professional as you would expect with a director like Ridley Scott. As for Michael Fassbender, he and I are good friends. He’s dedicated to his roles like no other that I’ve met. You know what I like about Michael the most, is that when the lights go out, he’s off. When he’s not working, he’s not working. He’s not a typical actor who takes themselves way too seriously.

Movie Fanatic: The challenge of this film, which was harder: Filming with green screen or not telling your loved ones what you were working on?

Idris Elba: [Laughs] Green screen filming wasn’t so much a challenge on this one. Ridley had built so much of the set to a point where you thought you were on a different planet half the time. It was 360 degrees surrounding you. I guess the challenge of all of them is to stand up to the level that Ridley wants. He doesn’t do more than three or four takes. He called me “Third Take Charlie.” He’d say, “Idris, it’s always your third take that is such magic.”

Disney has released the first trailer for its upcoming 3D computer-animated film, Wreck-It Ralph. The film stars John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch.

Reilly plays Wreck-It Ralph, an 8-bit arcade game villain, who grows tired of the bad-guy routine and escapes to another game. The trailer features a great scene of a villain support group, with some of video game history's most iconic villains.

Reilly has long been a prolific supporting actor, but has recently been proving his capabilities as a leading man, beginning with his role in 2008's Step Brothers (check out some Step Brothers quotes). With such a unique voice, it's a wonder he's never lent his voice to an animated film before.

Wreck-It Ralph is directed by Simpsons director Mark Rich Moore. It opens in 3D on November 2.

Madagascar 3 Cast Chats Craziness of Europe's Most Wanted

The Fab Four of the Madagascar world, Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer and Chris Rock, are dishing Madagascar 3 to Movie Fanatic. In the latest DreamWorks Animation film, the quartet leave Africa where we last saw them and attempt to catch up to their penguin friends in Monte Carlo to score a trip home to New York City.

Madagascar 3 Cast
"They break into this (Monte Carlo) casino and get in trouble when they find the penguins,” Stiller said. A villain that rivals any Disney evildoer presents herself in the form of Madame DuBois (Frances McDormand). “She’s a very scary -- in charge -- French animal control police person. There are all sorts of crazy chases in Monte Carlo getting away from her.”

Schwimmer believes DuBois may be the biggest obstacle yet to heading back to the Central Park Zoo. “She is a very, very serious animal control agent trying to make trophies on her trophy wall out of all four of them. She is determined at any cost to hunt them down and destroy them,” he said. “She’s my favorite character in the movie.”

After the casino fiasco, the four find themselves cornered. Their only hope is to stow away on a circus train heading out on a European tour. That brilliant plot stroke allows filmmakers to introduce new characters including Bryan Cranston’s tiger named Vitaly and Jessica Chastain’s cheetah Gia. Immediately, our heroes feel a bit low class. “We realize that circus animals look down on zoo animals in the hierarchy of the animal world,” Stiller added.

Stiller’s Alex is a lion who is used to being top dog. That apparently doesn’t sit well with his new co-cat, Vitaly. “Alex finds Vitaly very intimidating, very angry and a little bitter over the past. He doesn’t like Alex immediately,” Stiller said. “There are lots of cat-to-cat showdowns.”

Our favorite escaped zoo animals must go on the lam with a European circus and in the process, everyone gets motivated to further push themselves for the greater good.

“I think what they bring to the circus is fresh life. They bring new acts, new ideas and they bring some life to the circus that was pretty much blah,” Pinkett-Smith said. “It inspires everyone including our main characters.”

The Madagascar 3 cast then let us know what they enjoy most about portraying these characters that are becoming iconic in the animated world. “I always feel that Alex is sort of the guy who is the de facto leader, even though he’s not necessarily a natural leader -- everybody does look to him to drive the ship,” Stiller admitted. “He loves New York and he’s trying to get back home. He’s the keeper of that flame.”

Rock adores the ability to let loose with his zebra Marty, something the format of animation encourages. “Marty’s very, for lack of a better word, animated. So, I get to be really big. There’s no such thing as over-acting in an animated movie. They just make the movie bigger for you,” Rock said. “They make it fit. You’re never too big for that screen.”

When it comes to Pinkett-Smith’s Gloria, the hippo has it going on. “She is really optimistic and really fun, and adventurous,” she said. The actress also finds her maternal ways enchanting.
“I look at her as being the mother of the crew. When the boys get a little out of line, she’s always the one saying, ‘Come on, let’s get it together.’ I believe she’s the glue of the group -- she’s an anchor.”

Rock admits that Pinkett-Smith and her Olivia, for him, are the best part of the movie. “Jada is so funny that she plays a hippo, because she’s so little in real life. She fills it up. She’s perfect in that part,” he added.

Ben Stiller Stars in Madagascar 3
When asked what audiences can expect from Madagascar 3, the stars can’t say enough.

“The film is absolute family entertainment, top to bottom. Big kids, little kids, adults, grandparents... everybody can go see Madagascar and have a really good time,” Stiller said. “You've got some of the funniest comedians in this movie, and some of the best comedic minds coming together to work on the script. This is real high-end entertainment.”

Pinkett-Smith believes that audiences find kinship with the characters and their affinity for one another. “We’re just old friends; people see us as really relatable characters. We’re jokers who you just enjoy going on a journey with. Boy, we have journeyed,” she said and laughed.

“The thing that I love about all the Madagascar movies that we’ve done is that they’re fun, but they also have a lot of heart. Our movies are always dealing with really simple, central issues. It’s basically about how one sees oneself and how one deals with the world. That’s relatable across the board. That coupled with some pure fun, that’s entertainment!”
